| Are there any other companies besides Epson such as HP or Canon that have inkjet printers with the ability to print standard paper and directly onto a CD/DVD?

| In the US, the short answer is NO.
The Canon pixma line has the ability to print to CD/DVD, but it requires a modification and a tray to do it when purchased in the US. It's a patent issue with Epson, and at this point they are the only one I know of who can sell 'ready to print to CD' printers. | ||||

That stinks. But, it also figures. Thanks for the link tigerman8u, I'm not squeamish about doing such modifications so I may choose to pick up one the less expensive printers and have a go at it. --dES | ||||

Canon has started selling printers with CD/DVD printing capabilities in Canada, so maybe the U.S. won't be far behind. Roberta | ||||

| After a lot of research to decide between either an epson or canon, I just purchased a slightly used Canon Pixma IP3000 on ebay, then did the mod myself in about a half-hour to allow CD/DVD printing. The tray was easily found on ebay as well. I must say I am extremely pleased with the quality of the Canon on DVD's. Good resolution, quick printing, easy alignment, and a fast drying time. Just so you know, you do have other options if you are willing to do a little front end work. This patent monopoly on CD/DVD printing in the US is ridiculous, as we all deserve choices. I haven't tried the epson cd printable series, so I can't comment on them from experience, but I can say this canon pixma does a fantastic job, and I'm glad I went that route. | ||||

| Just remember to figure in the ink costs to the overall decision. HP inks are priced high, and you can't use a generic supplier. Printer manufacturers make their money off of inks, not the units themselves. | ||||

Much to banket of a statement. Man, I haven't used original HP inks in any of my HP printers in years. I always buy generics or reloads. I'm not looking for 100% photo quality from an inkjet, I'm in the photo business so I do my printing on an Agfa D-Lab. Over all though, with a little color management and some care I get about 90% photo quality on labels and such. Certainly good enough for that media. Incidently, HP, Canon, Lexmark, IBM, Samsung, Kodak and many others all use the same dye tables for their colors. Epsons, as far as I know, is the only one that is a little different. My problem with the two Epson printers I had over the years is that I found that if I didn't use them regularly (I can go a month without printing) the heads would clog and I spent more time cleaning than printing. This was true for both Original Epson inks and 2 different generic brand of Epson ink. Just my experience. --dES | ||||

My ip4300 hasnt asked me to replace any carts yet. Im only using it to print my actual dvds and not anything else. i brought refillable bottles of ebay and have instructions but the printer will still work with the refilling process |
