Cannot capture with hv30

priceman1975 posted 2009 Mar 27 23:25
Here is the problem: Connect HV30 to laptop (vista) and desktop(xp). Camera recognized. Load programs. Click capture. No video in preview window. Time elapse counter keeps ticking. Click stop capture. No files captured. Even with elements 7, after clicking capture and viewing blank preview screen, camera continues to play video, click cancel and then static image of video pops up in preview window.
Output settings on camera are correct.
Tried numerous firewires.
Tried on xp and vista os.
Disabled virus software.
Updated drivers.
Sent camera back to Cannon for inspection. Came back, no problem.
Tried numerous programs: WMM, Studio 12 Ultimate, HDVSplit, Premiere Elements 7.0.
Tried mini dv tapes and hd mini dv tapes.

I don't know what else to do. I would have thought this camera would be plug and play. I've never experienced this much trouble before.

What am I missing?

Thank you

Welcome priceman1975

Just out of curiosity ... when you hit the recording function in any program you have tried ... what happens if you hit the play button on the camera while software is "recording"?

Should also confirm with canon the correct procedure in connecting ieee device to pc.

1: Device connected to mains power
2: Set to playback mode
3: Connect ieee cable to camera then pc making sure proper connection (cable not loose)
4: Important > Start up pc

5: Now try capturing

6: Disconnection of ieee device is the reverse ... ie pc shut down, remove cable, turn of camera, pack away power adapter.

Doing it any other way could cause damage to camera (in many cases, it has).

There should be a disclosure policy on their website covering warrantee for this problem.

A forum for camera > http://www.hv20.com/

PS: Problems can arise from both hardware and software so kindly fill in some pc specs for current system ... and when answering it would be nice if you could give as much details about systems that have been used to test with the camera.

Sometimes the problem is ms ... their updates can cause havoc at times.

did you install the cd that came with the camera? it loads a couple useless programs but some people have reported it has helped with connection issues.

here's how i transfer with mine.
boot comp.
turn on cam in playback mode.
connect firewire cable.
wait a minute for comp to recognize cam.
start hdvsplit.
let hdvsplit find cam.
set output file name and location.
click capture.
wait for hdvsplit to timeout. /some sort of bug on first try/
click capture again and it will start.

vegas hdv capture works fine the first time it's clicked.

if you try hdvsplit does it find the cam and come up with "canon hv30"?

I appreciate your responses.

Tried HDv split recommendations. No luck. Keep getting error : Capturing has been started INFO: No more data is received from camcoder. Capture stopped.
End of capturing
Canon HV30 camera recognized by program.

Installed Canon CD. No luck

Tried pushing play button on the camera while software is "recording. No luck.

My laptop I am using is a Toshiba Satellite A355-S6925. Brand new, less than 4 months old.

I don't understand what I am missing here. With previous mini-dv camcorders I would plug the firewire in and capture. Why would it be this difficult to import/capture video.

I am missing specific codecs that need to be downloaded first before capturing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Does the geek squad at Best buy handle these kinds of problems. At this point, I'm open to anything, regardless of price.

It seems for most it works with HDVsplit and for some it doesn't. My HV20 works under Vista32 with HDVsplit, Vegas Pro 8 and also with Mac iMovie8.

You might get some ideas from Premiere Elements 7 tech support or forum. Also forum for Corel VS12. Also call Canon Support. Also try the HV20.com forum.

with hdvsplit i have to start it once. let it stop with the message "Capturing has been started INFO: No more data is received from camcoder. Capture stopped" and then click the square stop button and then the capture button again when it appears.

Start the camera's playback then fire up hdvsplit and try capture.

Any result ?

priceman1975 posted 2009 Mar 29 11:26
Okay, the tip about starting playback on the camcorder first then loading hdvsplit worked. I was able to capture and then open the file to view the captured video.
While capturing, the preview window in hdvsplit stayed black and an error code came up: computer may not be fast enough to view video while capturing.

Any ideas as to why this solution worked and why everything else failed?

It could be that the HV30 lacks a valid IEEE-1394 HDV output at idle.

It could be that Microsoft updated some machines, not others.

It could be differences in IEEE-1394 chip implementations.

The HV20 leaves a short gap at the beginning of the tape.

HDVsplit thinks there's nothing on the tape, and stops.

If you simply play past this gap, HDVsplit works fine.

Also, you need to make sure your HV20 connects to your PC in HDV mode, rather than DV mode. If you have issues with this, connecting while playing an HDV tape sometimes helps.

Cheers,
David.

Wow.. This thread rocks..

Mine was doing this.. I am not able to get it to work with the:

"Start the camera's playback then fire up hdvsplit and try capture." trick..

Is this what everyone else is doing now? What about if I want to use Sony Vegas, etc?
