Can you burn at higher than the media advertised speed?

A true newbie question .... If I buy a 12x writer but the media (say TDK) is at 4x will I be able to burn at 12x or be limited by the 4x on the media.

Bodyslide posted 2004 Aug 26 13:27
Certain media and firmware version's of your burner may allow the media to be burned faster. I use Prodisc S03 which are 4X, and a pioneer 107, which is an 8X burner with the newest firmware 1.18 and it burns up to 8x.

i have seen many threads were people are burning 4x media at 8x and 2x media at 4x.

Some recent Fuji 2x discs I bought are burning at 4x on my TDX Burner with updated firmware.

Beware of possible read errors when burning discs faster than what they are rated.

Moved to Media forum

The contradiction I see is folks who use "deep analysis" in DVDShrink, then "push" their media to double its rated speed

If they're willing to accept the defects pushing the media could cause, why bother with deep analysis? A bit like polishing a turd.

I can burn TYs and TDKs at 8x, but I would definitely not reccomend it, since the error rate could be a little too high.

Especially since there's no good reason. I mean really, what's the difference if it takes 7 minutes to burn or 4? I'd rather let it take more time and not overheat the dye. Then I know that DVD will still be good in a year or two.

I'm burning at 4X now with 4X G04 media. Plenty fast at 15 minutes/burn

Probably a personal preference I think. As mentioned, it can be done, but individual results may vary dependant on media used.

Definitely. My way is good for me only. Someone else's way is the best for him  Live and let live, as they say.

Funny, but not too long ago we were struggling just to get good 1X burns, and now .... What a great hobby

I always burn my media at 6X.

By mistake I burned a Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x @ 4x, so i was glad to find this thread.
From what was written above, can I conclude that if ImgBurn verifies OK and it plays OK, then I should not worry about it?

As another poster has commented, what the fricking hurry !

craigarta posted 2008 Sep 18 21:36
Boy I'll say my old NU DDW-082 still works and it has a max of 8X but I burn stuff at 2.4X espcailly game discs.

Yah my Sony DRU-840A can burn 16X DVD's at 18X but I have seen errors and I have noticed that slow and easy is always better in the long run

A 4-year-old post was bumped?

No, it was commented on by a member and someone doing a search would find all of the comments useful.
