| you shouldn't have to encode a vob to mpeg-2. it already is. either use something like vob2mpg or demux to vid, aud, and subs. | ||||

| You want to re-encode VOBs to MPEG-2 when trying to re-encode the file at a lower bitrate. I want to combine the contents of a couple of DVDs onto one, and suffer whatever quality loss that might entail. (on a 7" portable's screen, it doesn't matter much)
VOB2MPEG... two problems: 1-- It's for Windows. 2-- Can't, like ffmpegX's [mencoder] modes, read VIDEO_TS folders without needing single-VOB extraction first. There are some commercial apps that do DVD re-encodes, but I would like more control...and less cost. There are other tools to read VIDEO_TS folders, but since mencoder CAN do it, it would be nice to be able to just use what's already there. | ||||

| Don't re-encode. Requantise/requantize instead. You'll get better results, and requantisation is much much faster than re-encoding. |
