Can't display subtitles on some movies - OPPO 981HD

| Hey there,
I am having problens with some divx movies: their subtitles are not displayed on my OPPO 981HD standalone dvd player. The interesting part is that this only happens to some divx movies. For example, some simpsons episodes. I have checked this particular file with AVIcodec, and find out it really is a Xvid Mpeg-4 movie, and the audio is MPEG Layer 3 CBR. The subtitles also seens to be ok, on srt format. Anyone have any idea what is going on? As I said, it only happens to some videos, on most of then I can display the subs. On my dvd player, it reconizes that there is a subtitle there (I have the option of displaying the subtitle), but when I select it, nothing is showed. Please try to help me, tell me if you need more information! Regards, Uderman

| The sub titles on those could be outside of the border ( outside dvd spec ) so dvd cuts it out. On computer it may show. | ||

| It could be what INFRATOM suggests. Also, I have seen some DVD players refuse to play SRT files if there strange control characters in the file or the file was not created on a Windows system. I edited an SRT file on a Unix server once and my DVD player refused to play it until I opened it and saved it under Windows. Windows and Unix use different end of line character sequences and I assume that was the problem. | ||

| Well, this video is in 4x3 format, so I maybe the problem is that. But the subtitles don't show at all, they don't get "cuted" on the border of the video. Is there any solution for this?
I know I can re-encode the video with the subs on it, but if there is a simpler solution I would prefer it. Thank you!

| Ok, I am re-encoding the videos with a subtitle filter, but if anyone have a simples solution please let me know. It takes too long to re-encode tons of episodes  | ||

| What is the format of the movies that don't work. As noted above, if the subtitle files are in srt format and they aren't working, then there is likely something wrong with the files. | ||

4x3 video is NOT the problem. INFRATOM and I both told you 2 possible causes, but you don't seem interested in listening to us, so I'm not going to post any more in this thread. Good luck.

| Hello. I had just the same problem, and it took me quite a while to find out how to solve it -Oppo support was absolutely useless here. Itīs a firmware thing: the last two official firmware updates completely mess up the displaying of divx subtitles. The solution, then, is to go back to the previous firmware, which works fantastic:

| Surprising, they are generally very helpful. Did you let Oppo know how you solved the problem? Maybe that will allow them to find and correct the problem quicker. | ||

I did had a long exchange of emails with the Oppo support, but they didnīt seem to recognize nor the problem nor the solution. For instance, they didnīt know that you can switch between different subtitles (in different languages) while watching a divx movie. They even said that itīs impossible! It is a pitty, since 980 and 981 are both great dvd-players -980 has a worse problem with divx subtitles: it usually "cuts off" the last words of a long subtitle, instead of creating a new line. Strange enough. Anyway, it looks as if they are not supporting the dv-981hd anymore, so... I wonder if new Oppo blu-ray finally manages properly divx subtitles... |
