Best Buy drops Blu-ray player price below $100

fairytale00 posted 2008 Oct 28 22:11
Best Buy has lowered the price of its Insignia-branded Blu-ray player by $30 to $199.In addition, Best Buy's web site says the Insignia Blu-ray player comes with a $100 coupon book inside the box which can be redeemed for Blu-ray movies at the store. (Note: Insignia is Best Buy's private label for numerous electronics.) The coupons effectively cuts the player's price to $99.

If the player itself was $99 I might buy it. I have no interest in buying any blu-ray discs but I would rent them from netflix.

And 32" flat screens are expected to drop to $399 in the next month or so.

Too bad there's so little worth watching

Huh? I watch new movies every week....there is plenty to watch out there!

Wow too bad I already have a ps3 and a pc bdrom or I might get into that.

Is it profile 2.0? Or does it at least have a firmware upgrade option?

It is nice to see price drops on the hardware finally.

racer-x posted 2008 Oct 29 12:51
Still not cheap enough for me yet. I'm waiting for the players to get in the $100 USD range. I'm not interested in Blu-Ray movies, just my own HD content. Since Sony's 2nd quarter profit is down 90%, it might happen sooner than you think.........................

MJA posted 2008 Oct 29 13:14
$200 isn't cheap.specially when you can get a PS3 for $250 from sonystyle.com ($150 off when you apply for their visa card)

racer-x.do you have an account with hv20.com? (dog with a football helmet )

Yeah, no mention of specific brands in the news stories.

Yeah, you're right. At that price point, I guess it makes sense to see it in HD, just as long as it isn't Tony Danza or Adam Sandler.

If its a 1080p set I would I highly doubt it would get the price slash. I imagine these will all be 1080i sets (or more likely 1366x768 lcd sets like mine - which I like because I didn't want to spend more at the time).

the biggest discounts will be in the bare-bones, off-brand, stripped-down TVs. You'll get good enough picture quality, but don't expect, say, 120Hz operation, multiple HDMI inputs, and so on.

The Insignia is a profile 1.1 player,if they gave a $100 instant rebate I would buy it.

You'll love the picture quality. Experiment with shooting modes. learn the exposure trick with the photo button, which allows you to control the aperture setting while in "TV Mode" (shutter priority) to get more control over exposure.........

here's some of my Vimeo clips:

Mostly sports footage of my boy's baseball........

It will be 720p sets. There's no such thing as a 1080i LCD. Costco already has a 720p LCD for $499:

It's probably all the leftovers at the factory after all the big players are updating to profile 2.0.

I wasn't recommending it to anyone. Just pointing out that there are already off brand 32" HDTVs in the stated price range. We won't be seeing 32" Samsung 1080p HDTVs at that price this year. Probably not even next year.

Just buy a HDMI switch from partsexpress or monoprice,I have one and it works great.

Yep I bought a hdmi switch from radioshack and I have two hdmi ports on my tv. I have it for my ps3, cable hddvr, and pc with hdmi out from my ati all-in-wonder hd pci-e 512mb card. (unfortunatley my xbox 360 isn't a hdmi model otherwise I'd have enough for that too :) :)

Buyer beware! I'm not aware of any BluRay player that costs less than a PS3 that fully supports the entire BluRay spec. These cheap players may not support the final version of the spec and if so that means that extras on your BluRay discs may not work for titles released since early this year. You should be able to play the movie without any problems, but don't expect a $100 player today to fully support the spec. That might change 1 year from now though.

Ai Haibara posted 2008 Oct 30 20:11
I know the (non-PS3) earlier players weren't as likely to have the connections necessary to update them, but don't the BR players require an ethernet connection to update? (Not trying to knock it, or anything, but just wondering how 'common' an ethernet connection would be for the general public.)
