Are you a golfer?

yoda313 posted 2008 Jul 11 19:05
So do you play golf? Are you just a putt-putt golfer? Have no patience for the game in any form? An avid video gamer but never played it in real life?

I liked putt-putt but have played in a few years now. Honestly I can't stand the game in just about any form. TOO SLOW!!! It puts me to sleep if I watch it on tv at all. SNOOZER!!!

How about you?

(addedendum - I do however have fond memories of the old dos LINKS 386 game, the bird chips on the pc speaker - the internal speaker remember,).

When I was young I used to play almost every day and was on the high school golf team, (usually as an alternate). I had to give it up for several years due to lack of funds and when I picked it up again it was like I had never played before, my scores were so bad. After a couple years on a league and playing a couple times a week my scores wouldn't improve and it just wasn't fun anymore. So I gave it up and haven't played for 3 or 4 years.

"Not any more" wasn't an option so I voted "other"

Something I have learned down here in Florida is that golf is basically an old fart's game. As excercise and a competitive sport, it's one of very few older folks can still be good at.

Myself, I just ain't old enough yet. Though in my younger days I did once get a 17 on 18 holes of putt-putt. There was a bell for a minus stroke.

Did have a bullseye on the last hole for 3.00 off or something if you got the ball into one of the holes? The one closest to me to does. Not sure how to explain it but you might know what I mean.

Like many sports its ok in small amounts...but sport in general now has gone into massive all year overkill and looses its appeal and impact as many look to other interests.

Most sporting events are motivated money making machines with overpaid sports people on a gravy train paid for by the public, who are prepared to pay such high ticket prices....at least in the UK.

We are not called RIP OFF UK FOR NOTHING..........We even have petrol at nearly £6 a gallon...... $12 a gallon in USA terms..........You are lucky in the USA only paying $4 plus a gallon.

Initially, the cost kept me away, plus nobody in the family played, so I was never exposed at a young age. Now, I have a bad back and I'd never take the chance of aggravating it by taking up golf.

When living in Georgia as a kid we got up at 5am to get in 18 by 9am about the time water boiled. You quickly solved the slice or hook because gators and snakes lived in the rough. This provides motivation. Forget about working water traps. Just take the point.

Same goes for playing golf. It is a personal challenge an can be humbling.

Why do people need to watch others playing games? They have just given up?

That's debatable, it certainly requires athletic skill and strength to be good at it. Walking 2 or 3 miles with a 50lb. bag is no picnic either.

I dunno but wto 350 lb guys slamming against each other is pretty impressive. Maybe because if nearly anyone of us went out there and tried it we'd be coming off the field on a stretcher? That's what they need for golf, it should be made full contact. Then I'd watch.

I had not played golf before a few weeks ago. I was invited to a tournament because of my involvement in community activities (through a board I sit on). It was not what I expected. I learned I swing right... (yes I am that new to golf) and that I dont have a slice like my teammates that day.

Since that tournament almost two months ago, I've played two more times... will be investing in custom clubs (given I am so tall - I'm 6'2") and intend to make a good go of it next year. That been said, for the time being I am still not a great player... would consider myself a hobbyist at best.

For anyone curious, I cant tell my score as frankly I was impressed that the drinks are brought to you by a pretty lady in a golf cart - and she and I visited each other often. I can share though that I was not in the bottom three players that day. so... good for me.
I also wasnt much better than the bottom three. lol.

tekkieman posted 2008 Jul 12 14:35
I took it up 8 years ago because many of my professional peers/clients played and was immediately hooked. I think the reason (and the reason so many others bad-mouth it) is because it is a game you cannot win. No matter how well you play, it will never be perfect. I also got my wife interested about the same time, and we have played together ever since. We joined a country club and joined the couples golf league. It is something we can do together for a nice walk and time for conversation.

When our daughter was 2, I was watching a tournament on television, and she left the room, came back in with one of my clubs, and started to mimic the swing of the guys on tv. Shortly after, we bought her wee little clubs and started taking her to one of the little 9 hole municipal courses with us. At three, she was walking the course for the full 9 holes (with me carrying her clubs).

Now, I play pretty much every weekend, and my girls join me every other weekend. We are members at the course on the nearby Air Force base. My daughter (now almost 6) tees off on every hole, putts every green, chips around the greens and hits several fairway iron shots over 18 holes. They also let her play for free. On the way home, we stop for dinner. It's great family time.

For the last 5 years I've been involved in an annual charity tournament that raises money for the blind. Every year the event gets Mitch Juricich from tv's "Hooked on Golf" to emcee. Catered lunch and dinner, raffle and auction, and a great day of golf for a good cause. This year my team was myself, one of my regular golf buddies, my sister-in-law, and her husband. It was a lot of fun. This year, I have tickets to the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado. I plan on buying a couple of hats, getting as many autographs as I can on it, and donating one as a price for next year's tournament.

Last weekend, the kid had a sleepover at grandma's, and my wife and I went for a day of golf with her sister and her husband. It was a free day of golf since I had won it at the charity tournament the year before.

*Full disclosure - I have a relative who works for Titleist, and I get my equipment cheap!

Guess it depends on your definition, for me I'd consider anything that requires physical skill to be a sport. For example I'd consider pool or shooting darts a sport.

And only they could invent a sport like golf.
Here's my idea for a fucking sport.
I knock a ball in a gopher hole.
- Like pool? - Fuck off pool.
Not with a straight stick, with a little fucked up stick.
I whack a ball, it goes in a gopher hole.
- Oh, you mean like croquet? - Fuck croquet!
I put the hole hundreds of yards away.
Oh, fuck of ya ! Big fun, yeah!
- Oh, like a bowling thing? - Fuck no!
Not straight. I put shit in the way.
Like trees and bushes and high grass.
So you can lose you fucking ball.
And go hacking away with a fucking tire iron.
Whacking away, and each time you miss you feel like you'll have a stroke.
Fuck that's what we'll call it, a stroke,
cause each time you miss you feel like you're gonna fucking die.
Oh great, oh and here's the better part. Fuck, this is brilliant!
Right near the end, I'll put a little flat piece
with a little flag to give you fucking hope.
But then I'll put a little pool and a sand box,
to fuck with your ball again.
Ay, you'll be there cracking you ass, jacking away in the sand.
- And you do this one time? - Fuck no!
18 fucking times!
That's my idea of a sport!
The manly sport of golf,
where you can dress like a pimp and no one will care.
Even a gay blind man would go: "Oh, dear Christ!"

Having been club champion at Pool Darts and Golf, I consider all 3 to be activities for the following reason.

All 3 require the drinking of beer to make them any fun at all. :)

I am a golfer. I only play 30 or so rounds a year these days, but I have been as high as 200 rounds a year.

Several things spoil a lot of golf for me:

1. Carts. Contrary to popular opinion, carts do NOT speed up play, they actually slow it down.

2. Speed. Particularly in the USA - I don't know why Americans seem to want to take 5+ hours to play a 3 hour game. I currently live in Sweden and we can comfortably play 18 holes, walking and carrying in 3-3.5 hours. Every time. Even on weekends. I suspect this problem is party the fault of 1. above.

3. Idiots who think they are Tiger Woods, but have a golfing ability closer to that of his Tiger headcover. A contribution to 2. above.

Handicap : 16
Golf clubs : Wilson firesticks ... including 1 and 2 iron
Favorite : 1 Iron, straight as a die and long

Hates : Detest woods, and people that say "your only 2 over after 11 holes" ... you know what happened next, lol, but then I parred the par 4 13th, and its the hardest on the local course...

Funny: Whats a bunker, its been years since I landed in one of those things

Tiperary tournament : 58 strokes, sand greens
Last win : 2002, Southwest slopes, nsw, au, tournament or tournaments champion ... by 1 point over pro

Never bet that I can not hit the same knot in a tree 3 times in a row, I won that bet

I still practice mid and short range for special events such as ambrose, and the holden scramble, but my days of hitting long screamers are done (infernal neck strain they call it)

dadrab posted 2008 Jul 21 10:45
I'm late getting in on this one. Sorry. Been away.

Watching golf isn't so bad if you're watching great players. I've been to the Masters 16 times. Augusta National's a beautiful course manicured to perfection. You'll never see anything like it.

I started playing golf at age 12. My oldest friend in this world lived across the street from the country club in my small home town. He and I played every day after we finished mowing grass (we did it to earn money). As we got older and got real after-school jobs, we still found time to play several times a week. Older still, and we had real jobs during the summers - yep, every day. We even played 2-3 times a week through most of the winter months although February play could be damn cold (even in South Carolina).

Off to college, so no more golf for a few years, but I got sucked back in by friends in the professional world who live for it. So, I played seriously at it for a few more years.

Finally, I got to the point were I knew I'd never get any better, so I stopped. Man, the money I saved. 8)

Still, I can take my old sticks and post a mid to high 80s score if the occasion arises. That's OK with me and most of the people I'd play with. I can even humble a few folks who fancy themselves "good."

Make no mistake. Golf IS a sport. The skills required to consistantly hit the ball well put it squarely in good company with many other sports, although not as physically taxing as basketball or football. Golf is easily as good an excersize as baseball (except for the catcher or pitcher positions); more than bowling or shooting pool or several others.

Being a good golfer requires more practice than most folks will ever put into it. It can be a maddening game and the more pissed off you become, the worse you hit the ball. That's the funny part about it - and I mean damned humorous. There's nothing like watching a normally nice guy turn into a stark-raving lunatic over the course of 18 holes of golf.

So, all you golf ney-sayers out there, just go play a round. It won't take but one. You'll gain a whole new respect for the game. You may not like it still, and that's OK. I can certainly understand that.

It's not for everybody.
