An Interesting Problem
Randalliser posted 2008 Jun 03 15:50
Recently I was stuck with a trojan that Norton or Kaspersky did not see or find but with the help of Spyware Doctor I was able to clean it out.
But here is the interesting problem, with the Spyware Guardian running in the background, the SVCDtoDVD loads fine but freezes up when I go to click Add Assets. Have to force the shutdown and start over.
When I disable Guardian load assets works fine. Once the asset or assets are loaded I can reactivate Guardian, it does not affect the encoding process.
Should be noted that within Spyware Doctor I had identified the svcdtodvd.exe to the allowed list but had no effect.

Just curious if anyone else had come across this.

Don't know about the particulars in your case, but it's been my experience that
resident shield type of protection often has the side-effect of interfering with
just about anything non-trivial you try to do with your PC. Since almost all
the nasties get on your machine through the browser, I've taken the approach
of running the browsers in a sandbox instead of everything on my machine.
One way to do this is with Sandboxie.

Unfortunately with SP1 Sandboxie is no longer supported on a Windows 64 bit OS.
But it still works fine on 32 bit flavors of Windows XP and Vista.

I do the occasional scan for adware and viruses but I just don't leave the
anti-virus running resident. It's much simpler to redirect browser disk
writes to the sandbox folder. Also if you don't like that approach there
are some free anti-virus that you can set up to filter the http input
streams exclusively so the impact on other stuff is minimal.
