| OS: Windows Vista Ultimate
Drive 1: Samsung SE-184M - External USB All DVD media (+/-R, RW, DL, RAM, etc) Drive 2: HP dvd640 - Internal SATA (DVD+/-R, RW) Drive 3: Some cd reader garbage, that I could careless about. Large-ish image http://wheelhockey.ca/dvddrives.jpg As you can see, the Samsung at least recognizes that there is a disc in the drive, the only problem, is it says it's not in a format that Windows recognizes. With the HP dvd640, the drive doesn't even recognize the disc, same with the CD drive. Is there some sort of Windows Service that I may have turned off that would fix this? Or any other ideas. I have tried uninstalling the drives and reinstalling them, I have also tried switching the drive letter. No luck. | ||

is it a blank disc? or is something on it? i'd try running imgburn and see what it reports when a disc is inserted. | ||

What should windooze READ on BLANKS??? Use a real burning app and then burn your stuff away......... | ||

Not likely. First of all, you need to approach this in a logical and methodical way or you will get nowhere quickly. 1) Have these drives EVER worked? If not, then you maybe something is seriously wrong with your setup. You may need a professional to help you here. 2) Assuming the drives did work at one time, put in a commercial audio CD (I mean put in a music CD you bought in a store, not something that was burned for you). Do your drives all recognize it? If yes, then the drives are good. If not, then you need a professional's help with this hardware issue. Also try a store bought DVD and see if it is recognized. It is possible to have drives that only recognize CDs or only DVDs, but that means that one of the lasers in the drive is going bad. 3) Assuming your drives seem to be OK and they all recognize store bought CDs and DVDs, then you may have a problem with the media. Your discs may not be finalized. They may not be in a format that Windows understands. If you think the discs are bad, go to a friend's PC or use one at work. Is a different PC also unable to read the discs? Then you've got a good idea that the problem is with the discs themselves. | ||

You haven't really given us any information about this mystery "disc" you're trying to read. There are many types of formats for CDs and DVDs. Need to be more specific. Where does it come from? Are you trying to stick a XBox disc in your computer or something? | ||

| sounds like a media problem like using crappy dvd media or the dvd burner laser is dying. OP needs to post what brand and media id is those dvd discs. | ||

Then you've got a good idea that the problem is with the discs themselves.[/quote] My drive will read any CD media and any store bought DVD media, plus any DVD media burned by my computer since I installed Roxio MC 10. That is also the point at which it stopped reading any burned DVD (R/RW) media that was previously recognised. Is there any other solution besides uninstalling RMC10? |
