| Hi all,
Ive got a Technika DVD recorder that allows one of the Divx or Xvid formats to be played. I was looking for a way to plug in my External HDD and play my video clips of that without having to burn them all to DVDs.... Anyone know any players that fit this bill? or is USBDirect jsut image and audio? Thanks. |

| I'm not sure what you mean by "USBDirect", but there are several players that allow you to play Divx/Xvid via devices attached by USB. Philips makes several. But there is a catch - your device (flash drive, hard drive - whatever) MUST be formatted as FAT32. NTFS is NOT supported at all. You can thank Microsoft for this by charging too much for NTFS drivers. |

| grrr thats annoying
I saw the philips ones but so far ive only seen that they support images and videos. If they run video files thats annoying as I converted my HDD from FAT32 to NTFS! I just wanted to make sure that they "could" play video files and not waste my money |

| I believe the new Panny EZ-x8 series recorders will play divx and such through its USB port. At least I believe the little card on top of the unit said that. I personally never tried it. |

| FAT32 has theoretical limit 2TB. In Windows XP/2000 are commands fdisk and format limited to use maximum size of 32GB with FAT32. It is limited by Microsoft! Try to search internet to find fdisk and format from older Windows versions or other similar tools, e.g. here http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Remember, you can format for example 400GB drive with FAT32, you need only right tools!!! Try search: FAT32 format limit windows |

| The SumVision Phoenix DVD player has a USB socket. As mentioned above, the drive must be FAT32. Also it seems to scan all the files on the entire drive before showing a list. So you don't want to plug in a drive that has loads of stuff on it (eg. Windows). Just one with all your movies. I have the Phoenix and have yet to find a DivX or XVid file that it won't play. |

| Philips recorders can do divx on HD on USB this there is a really big topic on it.
My Xbox 360 can play divx through the network connection to the computer. |

| Target stores sell a DVD recorder with the "Trutech" brand that has a USB in port and plays DIVX/Xvid. I have one that I got cheap - it was a display model. The USB port on mine does not supply power - I assume this is a defect - so I can only connect USB cameras & hard drives that provide their own power. But it plays Divx ok from the drives or memory cards.
This unit has lots of bad reviews online about QC problems. |
