This is a great DVD writer. I m using it since last two years now, not a single DVD or CD has given any trouble at all. Yes, I do had to update the Firmware to 1033, in order to get 4X speed. I was then stuck to Memorex 4x DVD media, as that was giving 4X speed, and i was able to write a DVD in just 13 mins. But I had 25 DVDs of Sony 8X media, which was using 1X only, with a pathetic performence of 1 hour per DVD. I decided to try the region free patched firmware from http://lenni2004.narod.ru/index.html and now its also getting 4X speed.

Other links to firmware update didn't have it; I'm guessing Toshibe revamped their website.

Follow this link to product page, and firmware update should be on the right.

Excelent dvd writer thanks to the firmware x433. At first i have maxell, tdk, fujifilm 8x dvd-r. All these would only write at 1x. I was upset. Then doing the update of these firmware everything turn to 4x. Cool what a relief. thanks to whoever did the firmware.

exellent writer with a F... firmware.I own one since two years and burned more 200 dvds with a some troubles. Just you have to change the firmware 1033 for the russian one 433X by lenni. I did it and today i burn everything at X4 without troubles.http://lenni2004.narod.ru/

Although this drive would only write on certain type of media at 1x the burn quality is excellent. I have done a firmware update on the drive so I can discriminate the discs myself but even without the firmware update the drive is still one of the best drives on the market. Toshiba knows quality!

It was re-branded as MAD Dog. Got it for $20. Use Ritek G04 disk, never fail. Excellent drive.

Comments posted by Net Surfer from United States, February 18, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

It's a great writer, since I got this one from OfficeMax $10 after rebate. It comes with MadDog Brand, however it is a Toshiba SD-R5112. After patched the firmware, it works perfect now.

Comments posted by Taminotang1@yahoo.com from United States, January 31, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Dang thing Burned at 1X, changed to Riadata G04 disks and it burned at 2X. Never faster than 2X. Finally solved the problem. System - Hardware - Device Manager - IDE Controllers, make sure the primary and secondary IDE Channels are set to DMA and not PIO. Problem solved, now I think It's a great burner.

The burner is a 10. Toshiba is a 0. They were absolutly no help.

http://lenni2004.narod.ru/index.html

All of you using G05 on the Toshiba 5112 and getting 1x burn speeds, upgrade firmware using the above link & instructions. Will enable you to burn at 4x on this media, the max intended speed for this burner.

Writes well with the right software. Nero 6 burns Verbatim Movie Discs at 4X, but burns ProDisc 4x media at 1x in 4x mode - but 2x in 2x mode; while burnatonce would burn (when set to 2x)at 4x without a hitch - no coasters on ProDisc media, except for a few that I misdirectoried.

Comments posted by John from United States, October 03, 2004. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

Burns Ritek G04 at 4x, KHypermedia(CMC MAG AF1) at 4x, but Ritek G05 only at 1x. All the other disks I tried were coasters. The only good thing is that i got this burner for about $20 from OfficeMax. Still, it's a very iffy purchase.

Comments posted by Naz from United States, September 27, 2004. Rated this writer 2 of 10.

It works, but it only burns at 1.3X with 4X Kypermedia DVD-R discs using Nero (shows 4X, but took 44 minutes). Not sure if I didn't anything wrong, or the drive has issues.

Comments posted by blueking from United States, September 20, 2004. Rated this writer No rating.

My Toshiba SD-R5112 won't burn on Ritek G05 data faster than 1x using Nero 6.3.1.15.

Not acceptable.

bargain $57 on July 4th 2004, I bought from officemax August 25th 2004 $19. Its very good as far as memeorex 4x media burns in 13min.

Comments posted by Siva from United States, September 01, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

Nice at 4X. Burns DVD5 in 13 minutes with Nero.

Still running 2X on burnatonce.

Will definitely read DVD-RAM - but I do have a Panasonic
drive on my puter, which may aid access via that software.

Works with DVD Identifier and DVD Info Pro - which the panny
would not.

Was a bargain at $57 online.

The only discs it has spit out - and produced a bad burn on
were some G**Awful ones from DVCentury (a bargain at $17 shipped - but unusable).

Comments posted by John from United States, July 14, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

Nice drive. It will for certain read DVD-RAM (4.7 or 9.4GB). I've had good burns with ProDiscs, still bringing the speed up to verify results.

It was an excellent buy at $57US shipped at http://www.cnetpc.com, and the fact that it can read DVD-RAM discs from my Panasonic E-20 is a bonus.

This is the best dvd writer ever . iam very happy with this dvd-rw drive at 4x dvd-r . in less than 15 min. and 16x cd-r 700mb disc in less than 5min.15sec. I can't ask for more . Make sure that the transfer mode is ULTRA MODE 2 , do not setup to PIO mode because degrade your speed recording. I use Prodisc, fuji and ritek those are the best quality DVD-r at 4x. Do not buy cheap media like princo or other brand. Also this dvd writer has the original firmware 1031 . i have no problems recording DVD's and CD's.

Comments posted by Chris from United States, May 05, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

This dvd burner is very good considering it only cost me $90 CDN 2 months ago. I highly recommend you update the firmware to the latest one since before that I was burning the Memorex DVD's which are good media that sell for cheap at Future Shop at only 1X. Now with the firmware upgrade it burns no problem to 4X. I have made 25 movies since and have not had one coaster yet.

Comments posted by roadboy from Canada, April 24, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I have had no problems with this burner at 4X.I updated it to the latest firmware in Windows even!People are posting that they are having problems with Memorex but that is the media I am using at 4X.So far this has been a great burner for the price and I have no complaints.

Comments posted by WoodyWoodPecker from United States, April 03, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I can understand the other comments below about media support. There are 2 ways around this, don't use cheap media, update your firmware.

There are 2 Toshiba versions that I know of. A KP and a KN version. One comes with 103x firmware, the other comes with 1Pxx firmware (could be 1N, 1M, but it's 1 and a letter).

1033 is the newest firmware and offers the best media support.

The 10 versions are easy to update, download the 1033 REV A from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=31 . This runs from windows.

If that firmware doesn't update for you, you have to get the 1031 version which works in DOS, not a DOS box or command line, but pure DOS. It will overwrite which ever current firmware you have. Then you can use the 1033 Windows updater.

I had 1 of these drives for ~6 months. It burns DVD-Rs at 4x at high quality, can't ask for more. They are so cheap that I just purchased 2 more.

The first one was easy to update to 1033. The other 2 came with firmware 1Pxx. I had to dig around and try this/that. But I did as stated above, and 4x burning is now no problem with Firmware 1033.

I use only Prodisc 4x media and Taiyo Yuden 4x media. With the new drives, before the firmware upgrade, Prodisc was only 1x, and 4x Taiyo Yuden was only 2x. After updating to 1033 both are 4x.

If you're using cheap crap like Princo, it still may not burn at 4x, buy something a little better in quality.

I only gave it 8 out of 10 because of the firmware problems. Had the firmware been easy to update, or came that way, 9/10, because nothing is perfect.

Ijust purchased one for £55, i used JVC dvd-r burned at 2x using DVD Shrink.Perfect results.

piece of crap. Tried with princo at 1x, crap. starlogic burned at 1x... crap. khypermedia burned at 1x... crap. Maxell dvd-rw burned at 1x... works!

crao means it burned without errors, but on playback freezes and is unwatchable.
