I was wondering what the system requirements are for this drive... I just got a new drive and I was thinking about putting my toshiba drive into another pc.

Overall a good burner. Bought one in February of 2003 for $180. Never had any problems with it through burning multiple discs.

Good burner, there is a firmware update...

SD-R5002 Firmware Version 1033 and update utility
Update utility for Win 98, Win ME, Win 2000 and Win XP to upgrade the firmware of an SD-R5002 DVD-R/RW drive from version 1030,1031 or 1032 to version 1033.

Toshiba has detected a potential write error on this drive. The frequency of occurrence is very low and it can be fixed by updating the drive's firmware.

With LIFETEC DVD-R the system broke down in the middle of the process due to "bad medium".

Bought this burner from Tiger Direst about six months ago for roughly $150 us, cranked up the speed of my burns to CD-R to a mind numbing 12x (from the old stock HP CD -RW 4x burner I had). The price was what lured me to it, though I have had very few coasters (about four, two which were my own fault). Still trying to find a good priced program like Pinnacle Systems Studio Deluxe for editting and capture, and trying to figure out a glitch that won't allow me to turn off my system when I install the drive. In all the thing works great other then the small problem of mine, which I figure is something easy and stupid!

had major problems with this device which i bought new. after about 50 coasters and trying everything possible to make it work, i sent it back to toshiba to be replaced. they sent me a brand new one and it worked just as bad as the original one. it would start the burn process and fail 1/2 way through about %75 of the time with different types of media. switch to sony and everything is working fine. toshiba sucks stay away from their products, a waste of time and money.

I have had mine for 3 weeks now and this is an update to my first post. I bought it for $250.00 US. Since last post I bought 5 TDK, 5 Princo, and 5 Ritek DVD-R discs. I have produced no coasters but had problems with both the TDK and Princo discs playing on an older JVC player (1998). The discs play fine on any newer model (Panasonic and Mintek). However the Ritek discs ($1.50 each) played on ALL of my players even the JVC just fine. I also trashed the software that came with the burner- (VOB and Cyberlink Powerdirector Pro)it was practically useless. I instead purchased Pinnacle Studio Ver. 8 ($69.00) and everything burns perfect now at 2X. Very happy user now.

Fine burner for the price. I bought this burner at a local mom & pop store bare for 160 US dollars. Aside from some earlier problems with a bad piece of RAM I've had only one coaster, so far. So far I haven't had any problems using Fuji, Memorex and even cheap CompUSA brand blank DVDs. CD burning is fine too. Anyone looking for a no-frills, inexpensive DVD-RW drive should give this one a try.

Got lotsa "Lost connection to drive" errors when burning DVD-R under Nero. Trashed Nero and purchased WinOnCD6 DVD edition. Now everything works well, no coasters at all. Very reliable drive when using appropriate software ;-)

This is an awsome drive. The price is great and it has yet to mess up on me. The only coasters that have been made have been my mistake. I highly recommend this drive, not only because it is inexpensive, it's very reliable too. Thanks Toshiba for a great piece of hardware.

I bought this drive a couple of weeks ago. I have burned a dozen+ movies on DVD-R with no coasters. Has worked flawlessly with my CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-RW disc's. I've been using Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 and DVD X Copy Xpress. I have used several different brands of media. I started out with a Meritline sample pack, all worked flawlessly. I then got a deal on some CompUSA branded discs and they have worked just as well. So far no complaints at all. I would recommend this drive to anyone.

I bought this drive for $175 from newegg.com, shipped and have used it for about a week. So far, I am very pleased with the drive. No coasters as of yet (although to be honest, I'm only doing DVD-RW's right now), and the drive seems very stable and reliable under Nero.

Only a '9' due to lack of DVD+R/RW support.

Burned my first DVD-r yesterday. I watched some of it last night & was immediately impressed by the increase of video & sound quality over VCD.
Also burned some audio CDR's that work fine. Today however, the DVD-R I watched yesterday will not work at all today!! I think it was a white label Princo [not sure--bought a sample pack from www.blank-cd-cdr.com/
burned with U-lead DVD factory. A coaster OVERNIGHT?? WTF??

This is a terrible DVD Writer. I returned one and the second one was not much better. I've tried the drive in several computers and different software (Ulead VideoStudio 7, Nero, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 & 6, etc.)Also, tried many brands of media. I have no problems with the Pioneer/Cendyne A04/104 models. Avoid this drive. Even when I had a successful burn, the disc could not be read in all drives/players. My last resort will be to contact Toshiba-maybe I just got two lemons?

Comments posted by Bill from Other, May 15, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10.

had the dvd burner several months and generally fairly reliable, though the instant vob software that came with it is useless and does not write compatible disc and it restarts when finishing a dvd. nero on the other hand i have had no problems.. Disks using MMore are very good, but the drive will not even recognise SKC DVD-R discs, so keep away from them.

Comments posted by anthony from Other, May 13, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

Don't use the Princo & Datawrite 4x speed discs with media code PRINCO. They only burn at 1x speed even with the new firmware 1032.
The Princo & Datawrite 2x speed discs with media code TDKG02 burn and play ok on 2x speed.
The Verbatim 2x speed discs are burning and working perfect on 2x speed. Haven't tried the Ritek 2x and 4x speed yet.

Purchased online at Avlogic.com, (good service) & it came with Record Now. Burned a few coasters, but after learning a little more about the process, 8 movies without a hitch. For first timers, I recommend using DVD-RW until you get it right and then start burning your copies. I'm a slow learner though!

Using DVD Encrypter, DVD Shrink and RecordNow Max.
Media has been Meritline 2x DVD-R and Optodisc 1x DVD-R

I just bought it online but before I start, can someone be kind enough to tell me what brand of DVD-R's has been more compatible, I would hate to buy a spindle of DVD-R's of any kind/brand and later find out they are not "compatibe" with this drive...

Thanks

Have had it now for about 2 months not made one single coaster not burned any cdr's yet but i only got it for the dvd burner.
Great DVD burner

Got this a few days ago. Things aren't working out very well. I tried burning on Maxell 2X DVD-Rs and DVD Architect and Nero would only give me the option of 1X or 1.9X. If I tried 1.9X, it would start out saying it was going to burn at 1.9X, but it would only actually burn at 1X. I burned about six or seven disks and around half were coasters. These were all DVD movies. Some would play in the DVD player, but some only play in the computer's DVD-ROM drive.

I updated with the latest firmware from the Toshiba site and now DVD Architect doesn't even give an option of one speed or another, it's just a blank box.

I'm really bummed.

Comments posted by Randy from Other, May 02, 2003. Rated this writer 3 of 10.

No problems writing DVD-R at 1x and 2x; fine and fast DVD ripping.

No problems writing CD-R / CD-RW in data mode up to 16x and 10x respectively.

*PROBLEMS* writing VCDs and SVCDs, even at 4x speed (the lowest supported!)
I've tried different CD brands, both with Nero and VCDEasy (CDRDAO), but the results are the same: the MPEG mode2-type2 track is unreadable when writing at 16x, or jerky (4x).

Anyone found the same behaviour?

Rated 7 out of 10 for the VCD write problem.

Haven't had any problems with DVD-R yet ( got Princo from allmediaoutlet ), but I picked up 5 Memorex DVD-RW and I'm having a hell of a time getting anything done. I've burned 1 or two successfully, haven't had any success since. What relatively cheap brands of DVD-RW work???

Comments posted by Dug from Other, May 01, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

Bought it in Italy 3 weeks ago at 260 euro (VAT included).
Since then backed-up 15 DVD without a single coaster.
Used 5 APPLE 2x and 10 Princo 1x(the last at 1.8 euro each included shipping and VAT). Tried EMTEC Dvd-RW and CD-RW, no probls.
CD-R goes at 16x, while cd-rw at 10x.
Can't find a defect even in DVD ripping (avg. at 5x).
In my opinion is the best in its price tag.
BTW since 29 of april there's a new tax in Italy that charges .9 euro each disc; they call it "antipiracy tax"!!! S**T!!!

Comments posted by Massimo from Other, May 01, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Great quality/price balance. Every DVD-R(W) brand was OK so far. Also the very cheap ones. Used a complete 25-disk spindle from EMTEC (25 disks for 40 EURO). Not a single disk-burning failed.
Yes, it is slow compared to SONY DRU500. But what does it matter in practice? The reliability is super.
