My Sony DRU-800a worked flawlessly until a couple days ago. I suddenly couldn't burn a DVD data disc, and I was getting an " Illegal Disc" error, using Nero 7. Frustrating indeed seeing how I never had any problems before ! Internet searches suggested upgrading firmware, trying a different disc manufacturer, burning at slower speeds and an assortment of other things. All to no avail. Then sort of by accident I discovered the problem myself. It was so easy that I kept overlooking it.I right clicked "My Computer", chose "Explore" and right clicked again on the Sony DVD drive choosing "Properties" once more.Thats when I saw the tab titled "Recording". I opened that tab and placed a check mark next to "Enable CD recording on this drive". I was back in buisness. This is the only trouble I've had with this drive and it's been pretty darn reliable since I first purchased it.I thought it was kinda weird to have the option to not allow burning on a drive that was INTENDED for burning DVD's, but that resolved the problem I was having. Just thought I'd let you know if you have this particular drive and encounter the same trouble. Geez how'd it get turned off in the first place ? Oh well, hope this helps someone out of a jam.

I got mine 2 months ago. Has worked well with most dvd media. However, there have been a few issues:
1. the printable TDK media do not work well after burned. They stop playing after a while.
2. the good media cannot be played back w/ COby dvd player (it says "bad dics").

WOuld appreciate if anyone has any advice.

No good. Did 3 successive burns on high-class Verbatom media (1 8X, 2 16X). All 3 started to play but then all eventually had "breaking up" issues in the picture. Tested on 2 DVD players. Returned for LG 4166B, which also does DVD-RAM and Lightscribe, have had superb results on multiple burns.

Bought this one in futureshop for $79 cn. Recorded two dvds:
memorex CMC MAG. AM3 and Ritek-D-01-01. Ritek was dual layer and played without any problems on my philips 642. Prodiscs F01 that sometimes failed on my pioneer 107d were recorded in 8 minutes. I am satisfied with it so far.

A follow-up to the prior post. Burning at 8x now with no problems to DVD-R. The first DVD I tried was a 4X DVD+R DL, and it worked flawlessly. The only thing I did differently this time was apply firmware update from Sony's site and the Nero update. I was really impressed at the fact that Sony is choosing Nero for their DVD burning software now, it's the champ. So far, working a.o.k.

So, my lesson learned I think....apply all firmware updates and recording burning software updates available before attempting Dual Layer. It's still fairly new technology. I would also like to point out the fact that the Best Buy retailer was great. I spend $200 for the burner and DVD +R DL's (60$ for a 10-pack). The exchanged them both without any problems. I have no idea how the tech at Best Buy though got the disc out, but he did! I was really skeptical at the fact that I wouldn't be able to return the 1 bad DVD burned and the 9 i had still blank and was quite surprised. I'll keep you posted if I continue to have failures, but so far I think it was just a bad first experience due to me not apply updates.

Used it for the first time. Not sure on the firmware but I boxed it up. The 8x speed seemed semi-reliable with 8x discs. 4x speed worked perfectly at all times and it was pretty slick. I bought one of the dual layer discs, checked sony's web site for compatibility, and attempted to burn my first DL disc at 4x and it scrapped the drive (I am unable to even retrieve the disc at this point). Taking mine back to Best Buy tomorrow. I'm thinking of trading it in for the 720, but I really like the black cover this one comes with as it matches my case. I'm going to try a firmware update first before I try to burn DL, I'm not sure what firmware the one I bought was on, but too late to check, now it's already in the box. With the price of the dual layer discs, I'm going to try and get my money back for the one disc that is still stuck in there! The tray on the DVD drive will come out approximately 1/4" and that is it! My other Sony 500UL external I still don't have any problems with and it has been the good ole reliable over the years, it just stopped burning DVD's all together for some reason, but still burns CD's fine. I purchased a new drive for both the DL capabalities and to restore my ability to burn dvd's as my 500UL is off warranty now, so .....I'll keep you all posted, it seems like a good drive so far, I just hope that I just had a bad first experience.

So far this is the best DVD burner I've used yet. Fast and efficient. The only coaster I burnt was because of an el cheapo disc flaw. I can only speak for 4.7 Gig DVDs as the dual/double layer discs are a bit pricey to just "experiment" with yet. It comes with Nero 6 but Alcohol 120% ties in with it well. They state you can use any third party burn software but don't imply it will work or not.
