Was posting recemtly to a Standalone DVD recorder I recently bought, thought I'd check to see if any of my issues were resolved. Thought I had posted here before, guess not.

I have had this drive for nigh on year and a half now. Drive still works great, the Sonic software that ships with it is pure garbage though. Just noticed they have yet another free (SONIC MyDVD) upgrade available at sonystorage.com
I AM SO NOT GOING TO HOLD MY BREATH, EXPECT IT IS STILL CRAP.

Drive works great with Nero or Prassi software. Don't recall I ever burned a coaster that wasn't directly attributable to operator error.

DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink work great also no complaints other than included software is trash.

Basic hardware config: WinXPpro, 600Mhz PIII Celeron, 384mg Ram, 200Gb Maxtor

Great burner, workED excellent fo a year or so. Then at the end of a copy (CD-R) I get a Windows Blue Screen. No biggie right??? Wrong. Now the pos won't see CDs anymore. Looks like the CD laser crapped out. After trying everything with my computer and a second computer I have ordered a nice shiny LG burner. Shouldn't have any problems with that one!

I've had this burner for about a year, and has caused me nothing but trouble trying to burn DVD+R and DVD-R videos for my video business. I tried numerous software applciations, firmware updates, different bit rate encoding, different burn speed, every brand of media and format conceivable, but still only got about 50% compatibility. Many players choked on what I burned, and many more simply would read the discs at all.

Just replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-A09XL, and my life has changed for the better. Both of my Sony burners are going into the trash. Those POS burners have nearly put me out of business, and made my life hell for the past year. Stupid me for having too much loyalty to Sony video equipment, and not replacing these burners sooner.

I've had nothing but good results from this burner for over a year now. Used most major brand media such as Sony, Memorex, TDK, etc., as well as "lesser known" brands such as Platinum, WinData, & ESA, and I can't recall the last time I burned a coaster. My only "concern" is that I wasn't able to burn @ 8X using Sony, Memorex, or TDK media, but was able to do so using ESA (using 2.0a firmware up to the latest 2.1g(?). Had speed problems using latest firmware, so I downgraded all the way back to 2.0a and everything's back to normal. Other than that, no "real complaints" here.

I have had this burner for about a year. It was hit and miss at first, then found nomorecosters.com and bought some real media. Now every disk is awesome. I use RICOHJPN-R01-02 (Sony DVD/+R) disks. Configuration:
P4 1.9; 1.12 GB Ram; 200GB HD; XP Pro; DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DVD Copy Platinum. DRU-530A 2.1a firmware

I feel 1% better knowing I'm not the only one to have sent this drive in twice. I just got it back a second time and it still doesn't work. "tech support" is clueless. Tried drive with Roxio 6, they told me they only help with Record Now or Sony My DVD. Got rid of Roxio... installed Sony software... No Difference !! Burner is Pathetic and software is Pathetic ! I will never buy another Sony product again !

For someone going through a burner every 6 months, I think you're placing the blame in the wrong place. I've been using the Sony DRU 530-a as a reader and writer for longer than that and it's still working great.

This writer is lame!! I used my first writer "a toshiba" for 6 months before it died. The replacement toshiba sent worked 6 + months and like a dummy I sold it, and bought a sony DRU 530 A because it could burn +R and -R media. Big mistake. Worked with sony support for 2 weeks and I am tired of it. 8 successful burns, 4 coaster + 2 coasters to do the drive test on sony's tech support site; the sony failed both tests +R and -R it failed to write, errors, errors and more errors. I have been burning for 18 + months w/ only minor issues w/ toshiba. 1 month w/ sony DRU 530A and I am ready to go postal "just kidding" but sony really created a lemon and I dont think I will ever buy their products again.

I bought this burner end of april 2004. At this time the burner works well, but I don't use him very much.
Middle of august the first SCSI target errors "no calibration". After 2 weeks they exchange the 530A. The 2nd works 1 week and died also on calibration error. After 2 MONTH!!! exchange this and the now 3rd 530A died this week on SCSI Target Error "Reset"
most used program: Nero 6.6
most used DVDs: Platinum or Verbatim -+R 8x
most used DVDs: Fuji CDR 52x

With the same configuration and the burners MTI or Pioneer A08 where no any problems. I will never buy any burner of SONY!!!!!!!!

I bought my DRU 520A back in Feb 2004. I went through 3 drives in the first move. First one stopped seeing CD's, would only see DVD's. Second drive would fail disk test from Sony and would lock up system when trying to write anything to DVD or CD. Sony said that the problem was caused by having Roxio PhotoSuite installed. They said that their DVD burners have issues with Roxio software. Sounds more like Sony has the problem. So much for compatibility. I will not ever buy or recommend a Sony DVD burner again.

Seems to work great for me. I am able to play the movies back on various home dvd players and computer dvd players. Not jumpy at all. I used LiquidVideo media and had 100 percent of the dvd's burn a good movie.

Comments posted by Jason Baker from United States, November 02, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

The writer burns fine till you try to view the movies on your DVD player. It produces alot of skipping, not exactly coasters but just annoying skipping. I was thinking it's probably incompatibility issues at first, but I've tried it with several DVD players (Samsung, Panasonic, Sony), still the same results. So I tried several different media (Princo, Ritek, Optodisk, Imation, and finally Memorex). It seems to produce more stable results with +R media and but still with occasional skipping. I have two other writers NEC and Panasonic. And my Panasonic LF-P567C, although slower, it produces perfect disks everytime.

I've had this writer for about 7 months now. it seems to burn dvd's fine, but i have a problem with the dvd freezing or skipping. i've updated the firmware to the latest and tried changing burning software and dvd's but still get the same problem. not real sure if it's the burner or something i'm doing but so far i am not impressed!

With the right programs, this writer is excellent. Only problems I had were with quirky versions of Sonic and a corrupted version of Nero and even then I only made 2 coasters. I've since been using DVDshrink, NeroVision Express and EasyVCD with all discs burned to perfection.

Comments posted by B2D327 from United States, August 15, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

Purchased DRU530-A in January 2004. It has been an excellent
burner. I have no complaints what so ever have backed up at least 100 DVD's using DVDshrink. Have used Memorex,TDK,and Verbatim media.I won't even chance cheap media. Only made 2 coasters at the beginning and they were my fault (learning curve). No trouble with cd's or svcd's.

Got this burner and originally some Princo disks. Most of which failed(it also failed to notice they were 4x). Upgraded the firmware and bought some Datawrite Ritek. All worked great, except when you tried to re-copy these disks - ALL had unrecoverable write errors. Drive refused to work with some DVDRW - think they were Datasafe. This drive is fussy. I got rid of it and went for the Pioneer 107 in the end. Don't waste your time - go for the Pioneer, which is cheaper and better.

Bought at CompUsa. Told me it worked with Win 98. It doesn't. Sony told me to upgrade to Win 2000 or XP. I did. Still didn't work. sony now tells me it needs 800 mz processor, even though the box says 400. Bringing it back. Dissapointed I had to waste so much time cause no one tells me the entire story. Guess I need a new computer. Wonder what I'll find out then.

This is my first DVD Burner so for lack of comparison I can only grade it slightly below avg.; even that high of a rating is earned via features alone. If you're in the market, splurge for the Plextor. I've made a multisession DVD that wouldn't show me the 3rd session...though my friends Plextor sure saw it without fuss...ARG! Firmware 2.1a also refused to complete a burn for me today on a Verbatim DVD+RW (twice), not to mention refusing to eject the CD after it locked Nero; I went back to 2.0c and it seems alright now. It also fails to read or even recognize the VCDs that I burned in the past with my ASUS CDR burner...though they play just fine in my television's DVD Player. That alone screams POS! Sorry Sony, next time try building your own =/

I have downloaded from Sony DV cam in mpeg format (1hour movie) but transcoding takes for ages (AMD 3000+ With 512MB DDR400 memory) eventually when it burns it has a error "invalid format" Used verbatim -R and creation +R media still could not get it to burn successfully, After reading your articles I will download the latest firmware and try again corrupted 7 disks so far. Also had the unit changed by suppliers. Sony DRU-530A

This is a terrible burner. It failed on 50% of my burns even though I only used brands on the 'recommended media list'. The only thing Sony tech support was good for was asking me REPEATEDLY if I was using recommended media. I exchanged it for a new one, got the same results.

Returned it and got an HP dvd420i and haven't had a single problem since.

Have this writer for a week, Used with Memorex +R, Maxell -R and Mitsumi +R. Write quality is good with firmware 2.0C. Will not do bitsetting. The latest firmware (2.1a) only add read support for DVD+R DL.

Have this for over two months now with upgraded firmware 2.0a. Burns very well on TDK+R and Ritek G04-R. Burned data w/o any problems. Backed up on 1 movie and 1 PS2 Game without any problems. Burned about 40 DVDs so far and only one coaster and that's because I had no idea what I was doing.

Comments posted by OoloO from United States, May 13, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I've had the 530a installed for about 3 months now. I upgraded the firmware to 2.0a and that SLOWED EVERYTHING down! Would only write at 1X for EVERYTHING. Also, before upgrading the firmware I made 4 coasters in a row with Memorex DVD-R printables. Although the 2.0a firmware enabled me to write on my printables, I didn't have the time to wait at 1X speeds. So.....

I Upgraded again to 2.0c firmare, Everything is working excellent. I've burned at least 40 DVD-R's and not ONE COASTER! My experience with this drive is "if it is working fine, DON'T MESS WITH IT"
