If your drive is dead with a flashing light and shows up in device manager as a "Boot DRU-510A" you might find a fix here:

I bought this drive as a Sony DW14A OEM before upgrading. Everything has gone well (every firmware upgrade) until the lastest one. Now the drive only seems to burn DVDs at 1x (rather than 4x) and CDRs at 12x (rather than 24x). Tried newer versions of Nero etc but nothing has helped and it's really annoying. Any other suggestions?

Up until now, it's been a great drive... if putting an older version of the firmware on again doesn't work then it may well just be the drive dying. I have had it a long time and it's gets put through a fair amount of work.

I bought this burner in 2004, just before the prices of all DVD+-RW burners went down... I was using it with my Dell Dimension 4100 and it was working great! Rarely ever a coaster and quick burn speeds: I used mostly DVD+R's and CD-R's. I recently bought a Dimension 9100 and the burner DOES NOT FIT into the case. You can squeeze into the drive bay, but then when you close the front fascia on the computer case, the lid to the drive is covered and it will not open. This is because the Tray Lid on it goes all the way to the top of the driver. I have an external enclosure coming my way from acortech.com; hopefully that will at least allow me to burn discs until I come up with a better solution - most likely a new cheap DVD+R/RW burner.

Very disapointed. Got one, it died two months later. Took forever it get it repaired, then the second one worked, but it won't burn at 2x or higher without massive skipping. Have tried the drive on several computers and with several media types - all garbage. Same thing happened with the previous drive before it totally died. I recently bought a Plextor PX-712A and PX-716A for my work and they blow this drive out of the water. Avoid!!

Can someone tell me where to get a hack to de-regionalise this writer/player?

This is a great burner it has been my workhorse.
I have burned a couple thousand DVD's with this burner.

It is a little picky about media.

Ritek, Verbatim, TDK DVD-r's all worked fine.
Sonic was about 80% success for the DVD-r's

One thing I learned if the media worked it played in all of my DVD players after burning with the Sony 510a.
That has not been the case with other burners I have owned.

I have always updated my firmware to the latest rev.

I have always had problem with this driver. It came along with my new computer. Suddenly it stopped recording DVD-r's and gave me "PMA update failure" every time I tried to burn. Though I can burn CD-r's, but whats the point when I already have a CD-rw writer? It "worked" for about 2 months.

DONT BUY THIS WRITER, EVER!

This is my first and only DVD writer. Bought it when it first came out for $350. Sounds ridiculous now that prices have dropped so much. I have been using the DRU510a almost 3 years. Have burned nearly a thousand DVDs/CDs and haven't had but one coaster - Starlogic 1X. REALLY BAD MEDIA. This unit has been in two different computers, too. I recently purchased some MCC 8X DVD media and they burn perfectly at 4X.

I guess one of these days I'll want to upgrade to faster writer or double layer, but I'll hang onto the Sony as long as it works.

After wasting my time trying to get this drive to work properly for about a year I finally binned it and bought a cheap one from a much less well known manufacturer. It outperforms the Sony drive in every area. The Sony was a really poor piece of kit and tech support were hopeless. I will be very wary of buying anything from Sony again.

Thaught it was working fine until I started watching some of the discs I made - work fine for first hour or so, and then become increasingly pixelated until finaly unwatchable after around 1hr 45 mins - It is not the media as I have tried six different "quality" makes. It is not the encoding either as have played back encoded files prior to burning with no problem. Is not the player either as he discs suffer same symptoms on 3 other players and the drive itself! Other postrs please report if have same symptoms at the end of the discs.

Very happy with this burner. Bought from MWave.com for $160 in 2/04, based largely on comments at this web site. Have burned 30 - 40 dvds, some using DVD X Copy and DVD X Copy Xpress, on my HP Pavilion (3 years old, 128 mb memory, 1.1 g processor, Windows ME). It burns +, -, R, and RW with no problems. Brands I've used are CompUSA, Fuji, and Sony. All worked well. Sony has a newer, faster internal burner out (I think its the DRU 530A), but it wouldn't run on my o/s. This appears to be a proven performer.

Worked well at first with most media. Very few duds. After 4 months, I started to build a coaster collection. Hopefully the replacement willbe better. In the mean time. I have a Lite-on to play with.

I had been using this burner since 6 months ago. I could burn anything. The best thing about thing about this burner is...8 megs buffer. Most dvd burners just only have 2 megs buffer. So I could burn CD/dvd with high speed without any problems. For me this burner is the best for single layer DVD writer.
The only disadvantage is...no headphone lineout.

There is a new Firmware (1.1a) from www.Sony.jp. I've updated my drive but haven't burnt yet... I'll see. Can get it here: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

Died after 8 months.

Have had this for 8 months and starts complaining about no media in cd or dvd burning mode. Sometimes it would take several attempts before it would finally recognize media.

After awhile it refused to read several blank media in succession. So I tried factory made media and it says no media in drive. I moved drive to a second computer with same results.

Talked to tech support and they were a joke. Basically they did not want to belive me.

Bought an NEC 2500a and put in the same machine and it has worked flawlessly for a month.

This Sony 510a is the ONLY cd type of drive that has ever failed on me, and it will be the last Sony product to do so.

GUYS BE CAREFUL WITH THIS DRIVE!!!!
I bought this drive last year and got an error when writing a disc. Then the light on the drive kept on flashing. The drive was screwed and I got a replacement.
Now 10 months on the some problem has occured on the replacement unit. On both occasions I wasn't using the best media. Last time it was EKA and this time it was Silver Mirror Platinum. These brands are bad but aren't the best. So for those who have this drive use high quality media otherwise the drive will do a wobbler like mine did TWICE!!!
(See my posting on June 2nd)

A dreadful piece of kit, far to fussy about mediam, can only get the reletively expensive RITEK GO4 discs to burn
