Wow this is the suckiest thing i ever installed into my pc. Burning dvd-movies is like lotto.. 1/10 works..

DO NOT buy this <insert foul language here> piece of crap.

I have tried quality dvd's and with different burning software.. Screw samsung, im getting a pioneer.

This writer is a giant piece of crap. Whomever stated to remove it , place it on the ground and smash it furiousley knew exactley what they were talking about. Just about every movie I ever burned with this trash freezes up in the middle of the movie. 50 bucks for this machine is 49.99 to much. I won't even put it on ebay and try to sell it to some fool who would buy it for 20 bucks.

Hi All,

I have got problem also with CMC media and TS-H552B. I have just tried to "downngrade" my firmware from TS10 to TS08. Now it is working. I'm using Rivision 8x CMC DVD. With TS08 firmware, this burner likes almost all medias(G04, G05, CMC have been tried - Ridisc, Arita, Rivision and so on). Try to downgrade your fw to this one. I heard, Samsung made wrong fw after TS08.

Its true this drive is truly a piece of crap. Got latest firmware t10 but still writes intermittently. Spent loads of money on getting different brand DVDs r-+. Take my advice... remove from your pc, place on hard surface and smash vigourously with a hammer... believe me youll feel better. DOnt waste time messing around with DMA settings and all the rest, get rid its not worth the hassle because its a flawed product to start with. Forget about it, and get a NEC3020.

I got this in a prebuilt new PC (HP Pavillion t849.uk). I have had to take 3 back to the shop so far as the same problem each time.
Drive comes with no region specified and works perfectly well with all media. As soon as I put a Region 2 DVD in to play the drive switches to Region 2. From then on no media works with the drive, CD-R's DVD-R's both jam the drive and are not recognised. If one is in the drive on boot-up the boot fails as the media is not recognised. The drive just acts like a CD-ROM and DVD-ROM without the ability of even reading other media.
This is becoming a pain as the shop will only send the PC away for repair each time (taking 3 weeks) after which i get a replacement which will again last until i try to play a Region 2 DVD.
There is no info on this anywhere, the shop will just continue to send away. Paid £600+ for a PC that I have had for 10 days in the last 3 months.
Total garbage

This is my 3rd DVDwriter; came pre-installed in eMachines Athlon64 sys.

Updated firmware to TS10 & Bundled Nero to 6.6.x immediately.

Very bluntly, in comparison to my BenQ DW800A this is JUNK, *barely* better than my orig OptoRite DD0203.
Nero CDspeed shows PI *FAILURES* for every burn & burn quality is way less than that of my BenQ (even tested with same exact burn with both burners on Fuji Yuden id'd 8x +R blanks. BenQ got over 10% better quality score, both disks tested with CDspeed in BOTH burners also).

btw: previous reviewer recommended TDK media. Locally, all of this I have found has been CMCmag disk ID (eg. POOR quality).
& this TS-H552B definately does NOT like CMC id'd media!

Best media in it yet (& I have over a dozen different variaties on hand to chose from) has been Fuji (Ricoh disk ID) 4x +R. This burner burns them at 4x; the BenQ burns them at 8x & gets better burn quality in the process!

Lastly, in my other main desktop (Athlon T-bird 1333MHz) I have a Sony 16x DVD-rom. In comparison this Samsung is also a POOR 'reader'; tries to read burnt media TOO FAST & as a result has read errors/glitches! Have even had 'read' problems with 'factory' DVD's (PowerDVD 5 playback).

NOT recommended!

Awwsome Burner. Burns flawlessly using DVDXCopy Platinum and Nero Software in all formats and speeds! I have been building Custom PC's and Networks for over 5 years now and I use Samsung products in all of them, less than 1% problem ratio!

Also for all the idiots screaming about disk errors and bad burns: #1) Always update your firmware, EVEN With New Burners at the day of install!
#2) You buy cheap Media, You get Bad Burns!
#3) If ya dont use TDK, Sony, Linkyo or better media, your wasting your money!

I can only burn DVD-R's with this piece of crap. DVD+RWs and DVD+R DL (DVD-9) always make coasters.

Well after struggling to make it work with Pinnacle and making several toasters and not finding any information at the Pinnacle site. I been that I also had problems with Win Cinema, which I have not been able to make the options to work. I downloaded the latest firmware update from Samsung 03-17-05 (http://www.samsung-odd.com) Problem solved at list with Pinnacle, Still WinCinema Manager not options still, and this is what it comes with the DVD burner. I just wanted Pinnacle to work, and that is all I care at this point. So here you go, download the latest update. I still think is a good drive I had several Samsung products and this is the first time I had problems with it.

Good writer if you not use pinnacle products. All media I have used (SonyDVD 8+r, Sony DVD+rw, Tdk and Maxell)and burnt with Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator works fine.

I have got the same problem that other TS-H552B users... I can't use the Instant Cinema viewer provided with the burner in the shop. ¿Any suggestion from Pinnacle about how overcome this problem?

love the drive its very quiet, reads anything and with the right media gives good compatable burns. so far i find datawrite grey fujifilm03 very good and datasafe 8x dvd- white cmc mag ae1 even better , looking at the reveiws i think the datawrite titaniums are on my list next. btw it hates prodiscso4 just spits them out half burnt.
i have a low spec p111 550 256mb machine and im over the moon with this drive, some of my back ups load quicker than the originals!

O.K...my drive is currently working perfectly. However I only give it an 8 because I had a lot of trouble getting it to work at first and I ended up having to return it to the retailer. While I was waiting for the replacement I upgraded to Windows XP Professional from Windows 2000 Professional. I just got a replacement drive, put it in and it works wonderfully! All of the media I bought that the drive wasn't recognizing before are burning beautifully and I lucked out because they also are able to play on my DVD player. The most important thing to do with this drive is:
1. upgrade to the most current firmware (TS06 currently)
2. upgrade to Windows XP
3. Return the drive immediately if it is having trouble reading media.

After I did this everything was great about this drive and I got it for $49.99 with free shipping!

3 days ago I bought the TS-H552B OEM for 59.- at Microcenter. It came with firmware TS04 but I downloaded the firmware TS06. I can't share the negative comments in this forum.

As stated at http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/163
the DVD read operations are very fast. Using DVDDecrypter I ripped a single layer DVD in about six minutes / a double layer DVD in about ten minutes.
I burned the single layer DVD to a Dynex DVD+R (8x) (bought 50 for $3.- at BestBuy on black Friday) using NERO.
The first time I burned at 6x. It works fine on the PC but my Daewoo standalone player could only play the first minute and stopped before the main menue.
I tried to burn a second DVD+R at 2.4x and this one works nicely on my standalone.

In the next days I will try to play both DVD+Rs in different players and also vary the recording speed.

Bought this DVD writer a week ago and I must say...it's a crap!! Tried to burn 10 DVD's,and only 2 went well...it's everything okay, installed correctly, DMA supported, but when it starts to burn, it kills all the DVD's..it's a piece of crap..i'm returning it back!

Had the H552B for 3 weeks. It will not burn a DVD that will run on my old Panasonic DVD player. Sumsung's tec-support solution is buy a "new DVD player". I am going to buy a new burner instead.

Keep the firmware current and only use quality blanks. Verbatim 8x +R (MCC) and TDK 8x -R (TTG02) are working flawlessly. No name or cheap store brands; forget about it! Purchased from Micro Center for $69 with 1 year warranty.

I can not use the Instant Cinema software from Pinnacle (and so not play DVD films) who is delivered in the package !? Always the message 'No DVD decoder found'. But with WinDVD from Intervideo it is OK and I can play DVDs, so why not with Pinnacle ?
No easy help found by Pinnacle...still waiting.

I'm really satisfied with this burner. I have got a serious problem before, I could not write cheap DVD's, just expensive ones ;), but I changed the burner to a new one, after it is working. So if you have any trouble with your burner, change it at your reseller.... Really good DVD burner... anyway, does anybody have experience with Rivision DVD and stand alone players? I cannot play them...
