I have 6 Plextor 712A's on two computers and I have had absolutely no problems with any media. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony, Maxell all seem to work fine. However Alcohol tends to be more reliable than Nero when it comes to burning software. Fast and reliable. The only problem I've had is getting these drives to burn at a faster rate than 8X. I highly recomend Plextor drives.

Bought the PX-712A 6 months ago. Upgrade to 1.07 firmware 1 month ago. This burner always have problem with media. If it the right media, it works great. Unfortunately, the only right media that it recognize constantly is Taiyo Yuden, which is one of the most expensive and I can only get it online. Other media, even if the burner read it before, may not read the next batch that I bought. After a few wasted time and money, I have no choice but to use only Taiyo Yuden. The other thing about this burner is, it takes forever to read a disc, blank or pre-recorded. I'm really tempted to buy a new burner to replace this one, anything but Plextor. Stay away from this brand.

After updating the firmware to ver 1.07 (plextor europe website - not available in USA at the time - available since May 7 in USA), I noted two things when burning: The buffer on the drive no longer cycles from min to max, and 2. The drive has compatibility with all but the cheapest of discs. Yes, it'll burn the crappy dupsonic and other media it would spit out at 50% or so before - at 8X, all the way to finish. Playback problems would still be there due to the poor quality of the media, indicated by the scans.

BTW: I do get better scans from Alcohol burns than Nero burns (or Clone or Decryptor for that matter).

Since the updated firmware, I've burned about 200 without a coaster. I did suggest to Plextor there were problems with the ver 1.05 & 1.06 firmwares, as I had better burns and compatibility with 1.04, but their tech (nice guy) had me uninstalling programs and other hoop-jumping to bring it around: Which would work for a few burns and be right back to where it was. I DID always see the extreme cycling of the cache during a burn, though. Since 1.07, the machine doesn't care what I install or uninstall!!!!!

After learning this, instead of buying another brand or a 716 for my latest build, I bought a 712SA for multiple burns, and am converting the 712A to SATA (the other two slots will be filled with a Panny for DVDRAM and NEC for quick burns), since 712s can be had for a song on ebay.

Happy burning.

I've been through Pioneer and I've been through Sony. None of these companies have made drives that overly impressed me. Compared to the Plextor PX-7xx line, the Pioneer A line and Sony DRU lines are complete garbage. I should have bought a Plextor a LONG LONG time ago. So reliable, so fast, so good. I mean really, I can burn a 12 speed DVDR on this thing and it doesn't skip at all. On my Sony DRU-510, it claims it can burn reliably above single speed, but I've never seen that and it's single speed burn is less than reliable. Too good to be true, but it is - this drive is AWESOME.

This writer has been the best one I've owned hands down.

Over 200 TDK 8X DVDR+ has went through my burner without complaints or greviances, my hands isn't twitching when im giving this drive two thumbs up =).

On a sidenote i might add that im only burning at 4X though.

When this drive works it works well but why oh why is it so pernickety about the media? It's more than a little annoying to discover that you have bought a pack of disks which it won't even recognise. Life is too short to feed it a variety of media just to see what it will accept.
Hardly a carefully worked out product.

The so-called software provided is a bad joke.
Don't even bother to clutter your PC with it.

I bought this writer online for $50 after rebate. It worked for about a week and then it couldn't see any DVDs I put in it. I contacted Plextor and they had me run the self-test on the unit. Determined the unit was bad. I had to send it to Plextor (at my cost) for replacement. This whole thing took about three weeks which was a total pain. I guess I should have bought it at a local retailer, then I could have returned it quicker. My new writer seems to be working well and I've burned about 25 DVDs with it. I did install the software that came with the unit (Roxio), but it seemed to be buggy and difficult to use. I downloaded Nero 6, which works with DVDShrink and like that combo very much. The only problems I have with the drive is #1 I don't like Roxio, and #2 they should have paid for shipping, since I only had the unit for two weeks. Besides that I like it just fine.

Loves Taiyo-Yuden, Verbatim discs (even old TY 1x discs burned thru at 8x as a test - wouldnt play though LOL).

ProDisc F01s are mixed - some burn great at 8X, some dont????

Shop4tech cheapies (TY G02 media code) burn good.

Dupsonic 8x media will only burn at 2x, then is player picky.

The drive is nice & quiet, will burn a compatible +R disc, and has excellent support from the manufacturer.

This is the best, and now we can change bitsetting, its even better!! Good job form plextor.
I can't wait for the new 716a, just for the DVD+R DL

Just ordered one from Dell: $108 + $7 shipping + KY tax = $121.

Excellent price on a Plextor??? Add in the $50 rebate and you're looking at $70 shipped.....pretty hard to beat.

Listed as $58 shipped, but that doesn't include the shipping or tax. Still pretty darn good for such a nice drive.

It burns perfect cheap media and good media burns. I've used the ritek GO4 works great, compusa 2x branded Princo does not work, agptek 4x + works great, agptek 4x - works pretty good, vanguard media works terrible, some other generic works pretty good, the burner however takes awhile to read discs and you have to set the drive each time you want to rip=it is set at 2x. and it sometimes takes awhile for the setting to take place. But all media that burned works in various home standalone dvd players...

Simply the best drive I have used yet. Burns to all media I've tried great, allows testing of DVD's with Q-Check. This is a high quality drive, if you want a cheap drive, your looking at the wrong place.

Got this burner yesterday with the latest firmware 1.02 installed. Burnt my first dvdr with a Memorex 4x with awsome results. The burnspeed was 8x and with no errors or other problems. Lookin forward to do some more burnin with this baby. Gets the best rating = 10!!
A must have.

Great drive. Burned 4x Maxell(yellow),4x Verbatim(All) & 4x Fugi Film at 8x until I updated the firmware to 1.01. Now they all burn at 4x except FugiFilm still at 8x times. As for reliability and versatility with media this drive rates highest from tests ran with Sony DRU530a, NEC 2500a and now content with Plextor 712a. If you like reliable high speed recording on cheaper 4x media upgrading the firmware on this drive is not advisable.

the media that comes with the Plextor is Taiyo Yuden
here is the code YUDEN000T02
this is the only 12x media I have seen so far

This Plextor 12X drive rocks.
What would make it better. How about a list of 12X media!
see the post above me. I worked from his post in getting media.
I found that Verbatim 1-8x media burned at 12X
I got is at Best Buy, in 10 packs,
on the back of the box in the bottom buy the bar code
both boxes read this.
Recorder # 94851
Commande No. 94851
bar code number is # 2394294851
on both boxes.
I also tried Compusa 8X dvd with no luck stuck at 8X
bar code 4180800390
sku # 312102 in a 25 pack
good luck I did NOT try Verbatim 4X dvd's in 25 or 50 packs

Unlike the Plextor 708A, which recorded all my Ritek +R 4X DVDs OK at 8X, I was disappointed to find few -R X4 DVD media that would record at 8X on the 712A and no media (except the Plextor supplied +R disk) that would record at 12X. My results are:

media record @ cost
Taiyo Yuden +R X4 8X $1.15
Taiyo Yuden -R X4 8X $1.15
Ritek -R X4 4X $0.70
Ritek +R X4 8X $0.75
Ritek +R X8 8X $1.10
Optodisk +R X8 8X $0.80
Optodisk -R X4 4X $0.54
Plextor +R(supplied) 12X ?

I do not doubt the 712A will do what the specs say in terms of recommended media, but the best record speed per price is still the Ritek +R X4, which would have recorded at 8X even using the Plextor 708A. However I must confess that I paid less for my 712A than for my earlier 708A, and I prefer Plextor burners over several other brands that I have used.
