I rated this a 10 even though this drive burns slow in comparison to today's standards. I've been using this burner for maybe 4 years and yes I should buy a newer and faster burner but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Basically this writer has been perfect for me even though its slow.

Simply put, this drive is perfect.

Media is expensive, period. No matter which standard you buy into, DVD media is pricey unless you're American and can order in bulk with minimal taxes. The rest of the world has to balance the cost of 1x media against 2x media, and ultimately screams "screw it!!!" and plunks down their money on the best burner, not the newest or fastest.

The cost for DVD-anything media at 2x or above it not worth the saved 10-15 minutes. It takes me longer to encode a home video to the correct format than it takes to burn a DVD.

DVD-R/RW plays great with Princo 1x DVD-R and DVD-RW on my Apex 1100W player, as well as the 5 other DVD players I tested while in Walmart one day.

I bought my DVR-A04 retail for $470CND, which is a great price. I picked up 5 Princo DVD-R for $20CND and 5 Princo DVD-RW for $30.

I've been able to burn multiple CD-Rom ISOs to a single DVD-RW and use Deamon Tools to map virtual SCSI drives to each image. I plan to reduce my CD collection to a 6:1 ratio in short order.

I've also created a DVD-RW Ghost image of my C: drive as a bootable image using Ghost with CD support as the initial app. Every time I make a major change to my system I update to Ghost image on my DVD-RW incase I need to restore it at anytime.

Trying to decide if you want to buy? If you're in Canada and want a burner now, get this model. You can't beat the price, compatibility and quality.

If you're in the US, get the new Sony DVD-+R/RW drive. Hell who cares, minimal taxes and a price difference of $50, get the best burner you can find.

Hi Shawn, had the power calibration problem a while back. It sStarted with problems burning at 2x and then even at 1x. I cleaned the laser lens as described in one of the forums. That takes just a few minutes. Ever since no coaster again. Bought my DVR-A04 in July 2002 and burned about 250+ discs. Best (value) Media in my opinion is Ritek G03 with firmware 1.31 it burns at 2x.

I bought this burner in July 2002 and have burned about 75 DVD's with mixed results. It burned most of the media I used at 1x eventhough the media is rated at higher speeds such as 2x or 4x. I have upgraded the firmware to 1.41 hoping to solve the power calibration errors I have received when trying to burn several different types of DVD-R media. I purchased a 25 pack of GQ 1x-4x DVD-R media from Fry's and this burner will not accept them, it gives me the dreaded (power calibration error). It's time to upgrade to a Pioneer 106D or a Plextor 8x burner.

any software to downgrade from firmware 1.41???

I bought this drive back in June 2002 and burned about 150 DVDs of home video only; just yesterday, wouldn't write anymore. Spent hours today trying to troubleshoot, and am giving up. Will read DVD-R and DVD-RW, but won't write either one. Firmware v1.4, tried Prassi and DVD Complete on W2k Pro; Guess it's time for the 106...before now, it would get a 10, but I think it should last longer than a year and do more than 150 DVDs.

Hi
I have had my driver about 6 months now and have been really pleased with it's performance.I have made a complete back up of all my original ps2 xbox and dvd films i own in case of the kids messing any up.The only problem i had with the driver was sometimes i put 4 speed discs in and it just would not be reconised by my driver. For this reason i put the firmware update in and bingo the problem was gone.
I also have a really fast 52x Cdrw drive in my pc but half the time still use my A04 for cdr as i have so much confidence in it's performance. My cousin has a really updated dvd drive not dropping any names but they also make the No1 console. His is suppose to do 4xspeed and + and - and he has already been haveing major conflicts with the top copying programes which i do not have.Take it from me if you have a A04 you made a great choice stick with it.

I bought the A104 for 219.00 and installed in my win2000 box (I even reloaded windows) and got 5 bad disk. I was about to take it back when I then tried putting it in my Linux box. I haven't as of yet got a single bad burn with it. So now I do most (not all) of my encoding on my win200 machine and only burn with my Linux box.

Hi All,
Just testing out this Pioneer DVR-104 it’s a work horse. No problem over heating or burning DVD’s. So far I have been able to back up my DVD moves, with no problem even my Matrix DVD. I can let my kids view my movies with out me holding my breath. Using Maxell 4.7 DVD-R 2X Certified General, burns at @2X no problem. I did do a firmware upgrade from Pioneer site. The new software out, that’s makes DVD-9 to DVD-5 on one disk, is unbelievable. It works! Don’t want to promote any software copying software on this site. I am sure ever one is aware of the better ones. Burner was ordered from Tiger Direct $214.99. This is my first DVD burner it’s saving me lots of money, trying to keep my DVD collection in good condition. Would I purchase it again, YES! Just wanted to persevere the investment of the DVD I own.
Thanks to all for this site.

Following my previous mail on upgrading firmware, after the initial success the drive began spewing out coasters again. So I took the 104 back to Silicon Group where bought. They began blaming my system for Aspi files, Dvd burning software, ripping software, etc etc until they blamed my whole operating system and told me reinstall windows. Not willing to do that and after 1 futile exchange, I demanded a refund to which they finally complied after deducting a 20% handling charge as they called it. A Crap drive from an even crapier shop!

Comments posted by moji from Other, May 05, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

The reason for the error "MODEL NAME OF KERNAL PART IS NOT MATCHED" is becase some other, possibly third party, firmware has been used. So to upgrade you must first downgrade. Use the sites mentioned in other posts such as http://www.firmwares.co.uk to find the right downgrade then upgrade accordingly to v1.40. This solved all my problems after creating 1/2 doz coasters.

I purchased my first Pioneer DVD-RW (DVR-104) just over a year ago. I've burned 100s of discs in it and have made exactly 2 coasters. Both were absolutely my fault. I've had such good luck with the drive that I bought a 2nd drive, a A04, two weeks ago. Between the two drives I've run though 100 pieces of media in the last week. This drive will burn on anything, including questionable media such as Princo and DVDPro. No data reliability or coaster issues here. Pioneer is making a top-quality product here!

I picked this unit up (the CenDyneboxed version, but it's still a pioneer unit) from Staples. It was on clearance for $180. The software works pretty good, and the DVD-Rs play on my APEX-1600, so I'm very satisfied with the purchase!

I would suggest anyone looking at upgrading the firmware, read some forums about the upgrade first. I upgraded from the original 1.29 to the 1.32 firmware version which pioneer suggested to avoid burning out the laser on the new high speed (4x)disks and immediately started burning coasters on Ritek media.

I had burned 10 dvd-r disk successfully before upgrading. I ended up going back to 1.31 which seems to work fine. I couldn't find the original 1.29 or I would have gone all the way back. I just won't use the 4x media which is ok because I can only write at 2x anyway.

Having studied all the threads and read the debates on DVD-R v's DVD+ RA0 I went ahead and bought the Pioneer AO4 2 weeks ago from Silicon Computers www.silicon-group.co.uk
They had it on offer for £200 which although did not come with software it did come with 50 free DVDr discs.
I have used the drive to back up my hard drives no problem and have also successfully made movie dvd disks.( DVD-R plays merrily in my Aiwa 370 and also an Alba 108 from Argos for £69.99
The writer or media developed a fault ( marking each disk at the same point with a D shape) rendering part of the disk unreadable. However Silicon replaced the drive no questions.

I bought the DVR-104 for $230 on Ebay about 6 or 7 weeks ago. It was new, but the software supplied (probably buy the vendor) was total crap. After reading the forums, and practically everything else on this site, I ended up using Nero, which I already had, and Ifoedit. I tell you, I couldn't be happier. PS2 backups are a breeze, and, thanks to the kickass guides, movie backups are also painless. I use the cheapest dvd-r media I can find(usually on Ebay), and so far I've gotten ~80-90 burns with not one coaster!!!! I must admit that my first 2 wouldn't play in anything but my Apex AD1100, but that was my fault....noob that I am. I can't tell you what it reads or doesn't read, or how it does with cd-r(w), because I bought it to burn DVDs, and blanks are all I put into it. I have other drives for everything else. Well, enough drooling, my keyboard is getting wet!!! Definite 10!
