Note that RitekG04 media only burn at 2X when the 160E firmware is installed. Go back to 150E to allow a choice of 2X or 4X burn with G04s.

I bought it 1 month ago for $128 (in Argentina. Upgraded to firmware 150E hacked for RC1 (Zone Free)
The drive has work well with the included media (DVD+R:YUDEN000-T01-001) at 9x, a Verbatim +RW 2.4X (DVD+RW:CMC MAG-W01-000) and several Ritex DVD-R 4X (DVD-R:RITEKG04)
Backed up videos have been recognized in several players (Philips, jWin 503, Precision PVD-5190SM)when recorded with CloneDVD. I have problems when using CopytoDVD (back-ups not recognized by the DVD players, although working OK in the Optorite and in a Pioneer 116 DVD-ROM.
Also has worked with CD-R and CD-RW. The HD-BURN has worked OK in Imation 16X media and the recorded disc was recognized on another drive thatr supports HD-BURN (an Optorite DD0201)
Problem: After burning with HD-BURN I could not write to CD-RWs ("Calibration Error). I was going to RMA the drive, but after writing to a DVD-RW, the problem dissapeared

I got the burner a few weeks ago and I have had 0 coasters out of about 25 burns. It came with the latest firmware 1.30E. I’ve used Nero 6 for data and DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink for DVD video back ups. I’ve burned Maxell +r 4x @8x and Matrix –r 4x @4x, both work great on my Apex player. This is a great drive!!

I returned a plextor PX-708A for this drive. This is a great drive. I've burned everything from Khypermedia (+2.4), Sony (+4x @ 8x), Memorex (+4x @ 8x), Memorex (+4x RW) and G04's. Great not one coaster yet. Nice cheap price for a great drive. If your looking for a DVD Burner don't look any further.

I bought this DVD Writter from egghead for $110.00 last week and wow what a great Burner. I have read previous articles and was debating but this burner rocks. I have upgraded the firmware through

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=60

which I dont know what difference it made but this burner still works with my DVD Copy Platinuim. Not only is this burner fast but very sleck and cool looking unlike any others I've seen.

bought this drive in the first part of january. Had a couple of problems making coasters at first. I then flashed to 1.30E which didnt really help.

I then flashed to 1.0D and have not had a single issue since. I know 1.0D was pulled shortly after it was posted for some reason but this is the best so far they have released.

Wow my first DVD writer and its great!!! I use ritek G04s and they burn in 15 minutes. I've used Memorex 4x +rs at 8x and it burned in less than 10 minutes. : ) DVDXCopy worked with out a problem. I don't know why someone would have a problem with this drive, I'm very happy with it. :)

Hate this burner, wasted about $100 on media thinking it may have been the labels i was applying to it, or the fact i was surfing the net while i burned. Tried memorex 4X, memorex 4x printable, tdk, X brand, and starlogic. 1 out of 3 burns is sucessful. upgraded to firmware 1.20 thinking that was the problem. "operating temp is 45F to 115F" i put a thermal probe taped on the case to find the burner maxes out at 110F after more than one burn. I think thats the issue. case temp is 45F and processor temp is 80F i think the burner over heats. its been 48 hours since i emailed tech support and no reply. getting ready to return it. trying one last burn after i let the burner cool down. ready to go psyco on this thing.

Great results with DVD-R and DVD-RW media. I have only tried to burn DVD+R with "Ultra DVD+R" I have made about 10 coasters. What I can burn, won't play anywhere, and if I try to burn Ultra +R's with Nero, I get a failure to finalize error(coaster).
I hesitate to suggest this drive, but, with different (better) DVD+R media, my opinion may change.

I got this drive two weeks ago. Works great even with DVDXCopy. : ) I burn 4x memorex at 8x and they play in my pioneer and apex DVD players without a problem. I'm very happy with this drive. : ) I'm glad I got this one over the pioneer I saved alot of money.

This burner works okay bit it will NOT WORK with DVD X Copy Platinum. I turned 25 DVDs into coasters with tech support at 321 Studios before buying a LiteOn burner that works just fine with DVD X Copy.

Don't even think of using DVD X Copy Platinum with this burner.

Bought this drive as a MagicSpin from OfficeMax for $64.99 after rebate. Hasn't missed a beat yet. Have successfully used Imation 4X media to burn at 8X. Also no problems with cheap Khypermedia 2.4x +R media. Rips great and has performed flawlessly.

I got this off of ebay brand new for $139 plus shipping. I picked up some Fugifilm 4x dvd+r and they work great (in my PS2). I can burn them at 8x and takes about 15 mins for a full dvd (with menus) to burn. the drive is very quiet no crazy motor noise. Cd-r burns at 40x were flawless. now i just have to try some dvd-r and see how they work. It was definitely worth the money. Good product.

I went out and spent about $100 on different types and brands of media to see if I could find something that would play on my Apex AD 1500. All the -R disks wouldn't load. That includes a TDK, Imation, Memorex, Fuji and I think Sony, can't remember. The +R disks worked ok. This troubled me and I considered returning it. My Apex plays EVERYTHING. These same -R disks worked on a Toshiba 1600 or something like that. This was all using the firmware that came with it, which was 100. I updated to the 120e, burned the same disk with a -R and it worked just fine on the Apex. I haven't tried the CompUSA -R disks since updating to 120e but I'm guessing it's going to work. I will let you know. I would recommend updating to the 120e firmware. I would recommend the 130e except when you download it there's no .bin file included, just the flashing program. Pretty strange. Check it out: www.optorite.com/130E.zip. Still holding out on a rating for this drive until I test some more, but I think it's going to be good.

I just bought the DD0401 yesterday in the form of an I/O Magic IDVDRW8D. $136 tax included at Staples until Jan 10, 2004. The drive works just great. Easy install. One thing though, I'm using cheap CompUSA DVD-Rs, I think they are Princo. They worked flawlessly with my old OptoRite DD0203 and played on my Apex 1500 set top DVD player. They still burn just fine in the new drive but don't play in the Apex DVD player. This player plays everything. Pretty strange. I'll try some different media and then give this thing a rating.

Great drive I burn 4x +rs(DPR47L2) @ 8x without a problem just like the plextor but a lot less money. I've burn Memorex DVD+RWs and G04's (-Rs) at 4x with out a problem. Don't be cheap use good media and don't use the drive for anything other then DVD burn and you will have a great drive. As far as people saying it doesn't play on their dvd player, well did they take the time to check and see if their player plays copies and which copies does it play. I bet not!!! I hate the post that I read and they give you no information. Well it doesn't work because I so!!! DUH. Some people shouldn't have a pc, never mind a dvd burner. Just think some of the these people are breeding. : ) Great burner if you know how to use it you'll be happy with it.

This DVD burner is worthless. i had the DD0201 previously and had no major problems with it. So i figured the same would be true of this faster DD0401. Boy, was i wrong. I'm using the Nero 6.0 to burn and i have not burned 1 sucessful dvd using TDK 4X dvd+R media.

I got a track and focus error under 8X and 4X burning speeds and i got a failure to close cd burning at 2.4X. The only thing good about this so far is that it has not given me any problems with burning CD at 40X and Memorex 2X DVD-R media.

What a waste a money. Stay away from this. I should just got a brand name burner for a little bit more money.

have has the optorite dd0401 for about a month. When I first got it I went down to the local comp USA (closest computer store) and picked up a 5 pack of comp USA DVD+RW and did some test and they all worked fine for data and movies. So I went back to comp USA and got 5 comp USA DVD+R and 5 DVD-R discs. All failed except 2 DVD-R ( So I have 8 coasters if anybody wants them. So I decided to get some fujifilm DVD-R and I have burned 12 of them with no Coasters. The drive works great for CDR's. I have not had any bad burns and the HD burn works great with the right media.

Comments posted by RUSH from Other, January 03, 2004. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

I have written Sony DVD+R (DPR47L2) at 8x with out a single hiccup. They finish in less than 12 minutes! The drive favors the + media over the - media.

DVD+RW was written at 1x using Sony DVD+RW (DPW47).

Overall, I have been well pleased with the drive. I have had no problems playing Sony DVD+R or Sony DVD+RW on my Toshiba player.

I've written Memorex +R media (both RICOHJPNR01 and CMC MAG.F01 types) at 8X with no problems. I have done this many times and have never experienced the slow down to 1X the other poster reported. I've had the DD0401 for two weeks so far and haven't burned a coaster yet. I'm very happy with this unit.
