I found a hacked firmware that will allow you to rip at over 12x, I maxed out at 12.2 it can be found at the following URL

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread/t-82004.html

I used it on my dive and it is wrking perfectly. Just remember when it says drive type mismatch would you like to forc flash? Answer YES!!

Burner works great with dvdshrink and nero 6. I use the compusa brand 2.4x dvd+r media, ya the cheap stuff all day long with no coasters. Use the firmware from this site: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1672

Love this DVD Writer, I've burned over 200 dvd+r's and only made 1 coaster ( my fault, burned an image) I've used dvd+r and dvd r/w with no problems. I couldn't play my dvd+r on my new Panasonic tough book until I add the right decoder. But now I can travel and watch all my dvd's I want. I bought it at Staples for $79 after rebates back in December 03. Highly recommend this unit.

No rating, but got an email from CompUSA about an unadvertised special on this drive:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=304699&cm_ven=yd_em&cm_cat=em_020104&cm_pla=ppt&cm_ite=drive

Only $79.99 after two rebates.

Where did you find the "hacked" firmware? I'm sure other would like to update their firmware.

Update: The Cheapo Generic DVD-R media I used didn't work right, but I've since switched to Ritek. So far, not a single coaster. Just bought a 100 Ritek's, these are a littel different than the last batch, they have the orange design. Sure hope they work!!

This drive kicks butt. I have had zero problems with it and have not made one coaster. This drive is the #1 ranked DVD burner according to PC World, and I see why.

Memorex did a great job on this one. Our Family installed 3 different computers with 3 of these dual memeorex units. They work flawlessly on: 1.1 compaq athlon, 1.4 pent4 HP, and 2800 HP Athlon. Each machine has burned approx 24 DVD's since installation on Christmas. We chose to leave the original CD burner in the second drive, (since the Memorex burns slow on Cd's). That allows us to dub from one to the other drive. Works real fast. I think it is the best value in the market place. We purchased at Best Buy, they matched price at Fry's for 139.00 and got a 20.00 rebate. Good luck with yours.

Purchased from BestBuy over a month ago. Burned DVD+R with no issues plays on everything except an IBM Laptop. Burned about 16 Disks, not a single coaster. Love this drive.

Purchased from Best Buy $129 after rebate. Smokin PnP with Xcopy gold burned -R and +R, -R worked on all pc's I tested even personal dvd player. +R only worked on the pc with the dvd writer :(. Nice writer quiet and affordable for 4X speed.

No coasters so far (have burnt 7 dvd-rs(6 compusa and 1 ritek go4))

I just patched it using hacked fw to make it a "true" pioneer dvr-106d and the rip speed max out at 6x which is a lot better than 2x and it is now rpc1.

No problems, good price for a quality OEM pioneer a06 ($139 compared to $169 for a pioneer a06 at fry's), and reliable.

Great drive, 10/10

This drive rocks!!!! I used to have the TDK 440n (Bad move by the way) but I took it back because it wouldn't burn any DVD-R media. I plugged in the Memorex dual X, and had it burning DVD's (all formats) in 10 minutes. I have burned with Leda and Ritek media so far with out a glich. The price was right also. I got it for 149.99 at Staples that was with the $20 instant rebate. I believe this drive hangs right up there with the big dogs.

This drive is fast, silent, and reliable. I searched for a while before buying and found this to be the highest rated drive on almost all sites. I am very happy with it so far. NO COASTERS!! I opened the box, plugged it in, and literally within 20 minutes of opening the box I was burning my first disk.

Great Price $169.00 after rebate for a 4X Multi Format Drive. Installed Easy. Roxio software installed without a hitch. I made my first ever DVD+R of home movies from my Sony Digital8 camera tonight. Everything went well. I used FUJIFILM DVD+R Media. Only 2.4X (They were stocked near the 4X and I got them by mistake.)

The Memorex is also very quiet. Much quieter than the Phillips CR-RW it replaced.

Great drive I bought mine a month ago and haven't had any problems. No coasters even burning cheap CompUsa 1x media all my back-ups have played in my standalone.Nice software bundle Ez 6 is ok but I'm now using Nero 5.5.10.50 This version recognizes the Duel X-1 and allows for faster burning than Ez 6.
I'd recommend it to anyone .. Price has dropped about 60$ since I bought mine.

Great Machine!! No bad burns ( except one, which was my fault )

Pro : Works great with Nero ( good Xbox movie Burns ) Nice Software. Also works nice with DVDencrypt.

Cons : Really not any at all.

Price : 229 at staples - 30 rebate = 199. That was worth it.

The dual-x works wonders. This is my 1st drive and I've been able to back up numerous discs withought hitch. I recommend!!

Pro's: Quiet (very quiet), Troublefree, relatively fast, Great software bundle (Roxio), nice design. Clear instructions. Includes 1 4x DVD+R and 1 2.4 DVD+RW, 1 ribbon, package of screws.

Con's: Price(USD$239. at bestbuy), +RW speed is only 2.4 (still not bad), CD-R is only 16x, Unit is a little smaller than the opening of my enermax case (the sides have a small gap on either side).

Summary: No problem creating a slideshow with the included software, works on my Sony DAVS300. This was a compromise between a Sony with 4x +RW ($70 more) and a OEM NEC ($70 less). I'm totally happy with the choice I made (especially since I haven't found any 4x DVD+RW disks). And while I haven't had any problems it's nice to know that I will get support through if needed.

I mounted this drive in a Pyro firewire case. When mounted in the external firewire case it lost the ability to burn RW media. It will only burn R's. If you don't mind that, it works great. If want to burn RW you must mount it internal.

I just got this drive a few days ago for $249.98 (after rebate). It's black and and silver bezel look good with my black computer case. It's worked flawlessly so far.
