Had no problems with several different 8x DVD's for over a year. Then tried a 16x no-name and Sony DVD-R. Could not get them to work. Did a firmware upgrade from 2F2 (out of the box) to the latest I could find which was 2FD. It's 2 years old but it worked. I am now burning 16x Sony and TDK DVD-R.

Came bundled with Nero 6.3.X suite. Still working for me.

Never tried a DL blank. One look at the prices and there is nothing I have done so far that would make me choose those expensive blanks.

Bought an emprex 8x internal last year and it has done pretty good up till now with minimal complaints, but i was in the market for a new dvd burner and wanted an external unit. I am a heavy user, i burn maybe 15 movies per week, sometimes more.

I have thrown every type of blank disk at this burner from top of the line name brands to cheapies and it burns fast and well, so far I have made 25 movies with one coaster and that coaster was my fault. I have ripped and burned movies in as fast as 27 minutes and as slow as one hour, do get the firmware upgrade (live update) and make sure you have usb 2.0 if not it is terribly slow going.

But so far i am completely pleased for what i paid for it which was $119 on clearance at office depot, and it was reading these reviews on this forum that made me want this drive, as someone else put it on here, this dvd burner does make more compatible dvd's than any other burner i have used, and i have used several from emprex to HP burners.

So far I am really happy, even though I have only had the drive for a week....

I have had mine for a month, and quite frankly at first I thought it was junk. But I had a friend take it home over a weekend, to see if he could make it work. It took me almost a week to get it back because he loved it so much. I didn't have any problems recording CD's, in fact it recorded great. I first had problems with DVD's.

Well it turned out that it was me, not the device. After reading this forum and educating myself, I was able to get it working just fine. I am truely able to enjoy it now.

Operating System: XP Home, 1.8Ghz

Capture Card: ATI Wonder Pro

Software: Nero 6 Ultra Edition.

Bought at Compusa in December "04". After rebate (which I still have not received) it was $99. Have windows XP home. Have burned about 200 dvd's. Have had some dvd coasters (about 10) but mostly with cheaper media such as princo. Almost no problems with memorex +RW, TDK +R, teon -R. Most of the problems (coasters) occurred while burning cd's. Was probably the media (optima 32x). For every 1 successful -- 1 bad. Can't complain for the price.

Sony is literally infinitely better. I have a DRU500A and a Mad Dog dual layer thing , USB 2.0 new to last christmas. It cannot see an endless list of media. I have Teon, nope, Verbatim brand new 8X DVD-r, no, can't even see top of the live Sony DVD-r 8X dvd's. This thing is a piece of defication and I really REALLY wish I had thrown anoth $50 into it to get a second SONY.
DO NOT BUY MAD DOG. They do not take the time to make sure the code is written to work with XP home or XP pro. Some say it works with windows 2000. Whhoopdee doo. Hardware designed to work with one operating system version will not be around long. I got RIPPED off. Mad dog by the way does not return calls, or emails.

I have problem burning to compusa 2x DVD-R, with windows XP, but it burn fine with Windows 2000 pro.

Look like it has compatibility issue with XP! Most likely is the ALi USB mass storage chip set.

Burns DVD -R fine with 4X media but errors out with 2X media (both from Comp-USA) Latest firmware installed and latest Nero versions.

This is a superb drive. Seems as if enphasis is on speed and compatabibility. This drive has the ability to make DVD+Rs/RWs playable on more DVD players than a regular DVD writer would be able to do.

Great unit, so far. No coasters. Easily copies disc-to-disc. Under $100 from chain retailer, with rebate.

Burns fine at 4X on Fuji 8X rated DVD-R (074101752687) using DVD Shrink 3.2/Nero 6. But I get errors when buring at 2X on the same media using the same software.

Using the 16XDVD9_FW_2FA.exe firmware on this 16X Mad Dog drive.
