I bought this drive a year or so ago and have had no troubles until yesterday... It started out by no recognizing verbatim cd-r discs and then my verbatim dvd-r discs. Searched around a little and found a little app called KProbe2. It is a front end that lets you watch what the drive is doing. I installed KProbe2 and put in a dvd-r that I had marked as bad because it wouldnt read like 10 times in the last 2 days and poof it saw it. I out in a cd-r that didnt work this morning and poof it saw it. I had been getting errors from NERO and dvd-decrypter saying no media in drive but no it works fine. I didnt change anyting, just install KProbe2 and poof, it works great again...

I bought 1633s for about 5 month and I only use it for scanning because the buring quality is sucks. I even upgrade it with the newest firmware BSOS, it still sucks. Until recently, I saw a post that you can crossflash 1633s to a Sony DRU-710A. So, I did and I so surprise how much difference a firmware can achieve. The SL disc now is good as my NEC 3500AG and DL is much better than NEC 3500AG (using 2.18 rip fast firmware). If you problem with this drive, try it with Sony firmware. I paid $40 for a Sony. Yes!!!! This is truly a ugly duckling to a Swan story.

Excellent experience with Verb 8X DVD-R and Memorex 8X DVD+R. Terrible experience with Memorex 8X DVD-R and Verb 16X DVD-R. This burner came installed in my eMachines T3985. Firmware is original (no update yet available).

these drives are exelent i burn an awful lot of disks all dvd-r/rw and dl+ with no probs BUT i have to use good quality disks with quality dye if i use cheap bulkpac disks the drive spits them out i use ridisc, datawrite yellow, phillips,mr dvd,hp red,and verbatim.
infiniti disks are rubbish, for burning iuse nero, copy to dvd,dvd santa, elaborate bytes clone dvd2,and ashmpoo movie shrink and burn 2. all with great success rate and work in all typesof dvd players.

ok i posted a message saying that the burner always gave me burn errors for dvd-rs and burns dvd+rs awhile back. Now since yesterday, whenever i put in a blank cd-r or any cd-rom with software or data on it, the burner does not even detect it. I was trying to burn on a cd-r yesterday and it always asks for me to put in a blank cd-r.....i put in 5 different blank cd-rs and nothing. However when i put in a blank dvd+r it detects it right away. I went to lite-on's website and search the forumns and saw someone posting a topic with my problem but the problem is that lite-on's forumn links are always down, they never work. its been about a year and half since i bought this drive and it just seems to be breaking down ever since i got it.

it originally had the BSOC firmware and then i updated it to the BS41 firmware hoping it would fix my problem. But it did not. i dunno what else to do....anyone else has this problem? please give me some suggestions.

Reads very well DVD-video discs even if they are in bad condition. Burns CDs very well. Problems with Verbatim DVD-R discs.

ok had this drive for about 5 months. At first i burned dvd-r and dvd+r and every burn was successful. I burned about 50 times. Then when I got onto my other 50 pack of dvd-r it was a coaster because at the end it always gave an error saying "could not write disc at once." It says 100% done but then i wait for the lead-out to display but it doesn't. I then tried 6 more times with dvd-r and all have been bad. I don't know if it has to do with all the spyware on my computer or not. however when i try burning with a dvdr+ it works fine. can anyone else confirm me on this?

Everytime come out erroe code when I burn DVD from hard disc to Benq DVD-R media.Other media no problem.

Just burned my 10th no name dvd+r 4x no probs - Sempron 2500, 512mb, 80Gig 2mb cache, burner on ide channel 2 no other drives.
I avoid firmware upgrades. The drive works fine.
Complements my old Benq which I had for six months (70 no-name dvd+r burns and still works fine).
just two minor complaints:
1.The disk space useage bar in Nero shows a max storage size of a DL disk. When it should show a max of 4.5G.
2.got a read error when installing nero oem, second attempt no problems.

Good drive but I get coaster from DVD-R's. No problems with DVD+R's AT ALL. Memorex DVD-R was the worst on this thing. Imation was good at first, then spitted out 2 coasters. I'm scared to use any more -R's.

Had this drive for 2 months, price C$75. I upgraded from BenQ 8x to this 16x hoping to get a speed boost. With RiData DVD-R 8x it only burns at 2x, the fastest ever I got it to go at 2.4x after defragging my h.d. The issues my be with my h.d. being the bottleneck, I'll have to troubleshoot some more. No coasters after 60+ DVDs with Nero. Only 1 error with lead-out when doing straight DVD to DVD-R copy, but the DVD-R played OK. Reliable: YES, Fast: NOT so sure just yet.

Excellent drive!! Sold my Sony DRU500A becaus of lack of speed (max. 4x)

Burned various media on various speeds with latest firmware,
Memorex (+R, 8x) on 8.1 speed max.
Memorex (+R, 16x) on 16.2 speed max.
Data Red (-R, 8x) on 6.2 speed max.
Data Red (+R, 8x) on 8.0 speed max.
Traxdata (+R, DL) on 2.6 speed max.
Memorex (+RW, 4x) on 2.6 speed max.

No coasters until now (burned ± 80 pcs) and all DVD's were read by my JVC player.

i have had my drive for 3 months now, it makes coasters out of bulkpaq media, even though i upgraded the latest frimware on the liteon website. however it burns verbatim at 16x so i was please with that. there still seems to be alot of media it makes coasters of though, so come on liteon get your act together, get some proper firmware out for better media compatibility ffs.

I'm real happy with this unit. I've burned up to 8x with the major brands with no problem. Dvd's play on all my standalones. I burned dual-layer with the Ritek 2.4x DL media with no problem, It played on 2 of my dvd players (sony and liteon) but failed on 1 (panasonic). The only problem I have is with cd burning sometimes. At the end of a cd burn it will sometimes hang and I have to reboot to clear it but the cd is good. Go figure. I just use my pioneer for cd's and this liteon for dvds. I've had it for 2 months.

I have been unsuccessful at getting this to burn any media at 8x. I have tried Tayeo Yuden, Ritek and SKY. Ritek and Sky would appear to burn error free, but then would not verify data integrity (nero). Tayeo Yuden would not even burn. 4x disks would burn and verify without problem

This writer burns great with Maxell 8x dvd+r discs and flawlessly with Verbatim dvd+r 16x discs. Booktype setting to dvd-rom is a cinch when burning with dvd shrink and nero. I have had a few problems with TDK discs. But I feel overall with this writer if you use Dvd Shrink with Nero you will be fine. Just my opinion Verbatim is the best.

Comments posted by trimshop46409 from United States, December 31, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

OK but it is picky with the media.
Does not get along well with the 4x Ritek R02 I've got (coasters guaranteed), and the 8x Optodisc OR8 (Samsung) have to be burnt @ 6x, 8x burns show a number of pi/pif errors.
Perfect with the Verbatim DVD+R 8x and DVR+RW 4x tho.

Excelent Drive!
The main reason I got this drive is it's abilty to set the "Book Type" of DVD+R media to "DVD-ROM" so as to fool DVD players that aren't supposed to play DVD-R or DVD+R, a.k.a. BitSetting. Now I can play all my homemade DVDs on my Rear DVD Entertainment System in my 2004 Chevy Venture Mini-van for my kids. Before this drive my DVD+R and DVD-R would always read "disc error" and spit back out.

Long road trips are much easier now. :)

Just got it today. Finally dumped the 2 year old Sony 500a which was recently acting up. Smooth instalation. Burned a few with assorted media (Memorex 8x, Verbatim 8x) using the latest Nero 6.6 & no major problems. Not much improvement on the speed side over the 4x I was getting with my old Sony drive. I'm sure everyone's used to the grandiose speed hype by this time.
