After 3.5 years of use, my GSA-4167B has started producing "Invalid Block Address" errors. This drive never burned ALL of the medias reported here but now it won't do DL at all. This is error has been well reported on the net but no clear diagnosis has been discussed. I am assuming this is a hardware failure of the drive and will be replaced.

had this since may 06 (see comments above)

Burned a few hundreds single layer and around 30 double layer.

Just had 3 coaster, don't remember the error but it was at the very beginning).

Before that, had never had any coaster except due to bad files..

Using Tayo Yuden value line DVD-R

Now at 40$ can, think i'm gonna buy another one.

I am very impressed with my LG GSA-4167B. it was one of the first all media type DVD writers that I got, and the main reason was just for the fact that it could read and write with every type of DVD that there was at the time.

But I have since learned quite a bit about DVD media and the quality of writing, and I would say that its a bit more hard than CDr burning and the drive does have a lot to do with it, and I have found that this is one of the best writing DVD drives I have seen. The only problem is that they seem to be a bit thin on the ground. I have a newer LG H42N drive that I got because I think that it has the same chipset as the 4167B, but it does not make as good burns.

This drive does like good media, Verbatim is what it likes best and can make the very best of it. I like the DVD +R version (MCC004) but it is as good with DVD -R. So much so that I get better quality burns with MCC004 over almost every type and make of TY media that I have found.

A great drive that you want to keep hold of if you have one or snap it up quick if you see one, that is what I am doing :)

great drive thus far. Picked it up for 46 bucks at a local shop.

ONLY DOWN SIDE, when ripping a DVD it is very slow DUE TO RIPLOCK.
10x limit for DVD-ROM discs as well as DVD+/-R discs.
Single layer video ripped at 10x max and duel layer video ripped at 8x max.

This is with the most up to date firmware from LG.

(I have only seen one hacked vesion of the firmware and I am not willing to try it out. It's located on "THE FIRMWARE PAGE" for those that dare.)

Works like a charm.
Done about 15 discs so far at 16X.

Only coaster was when using Nero Burning rom and forgoth to tick finalize disk...

Using DVD-R 16X RIDATA SILVER MATTE

NICE....Very nice. Same bullet proof burning as my LG4040B but faster, quieter, dual layer and bitsetting. My old 4040B is still going strong by the way.
Way to go LG. I have no idea why these drives are not more popular....they do it all and do it well.

Good at everything so far.

LGs are acceptable single-layer drives, but don't get one if you plan on burning Double-Layers. You're lucky if you get two dozen burns before the layer 2 laser burns out. Look for Seek or Focus errors (at least, that's how Nero reports them) on the layer 2 burn - it means your fancy new drive is now a single layer.

mine only burn at 4x, error at 8x or up...wondering why...anyone could help? DL firmware from DL11 thru DL13, this issue still occurs.

I am loving this drive. I received a recorded DVD from a friend of a movie he made. I tried to copy it to my HD using my old Liteon 411s. Tried straight copy and Decriptor. Halfway through, it ran into errors and wouldn't copy. Put the disk in the LG. No problems. Reads DVD-Ram from my Panasonic recorder, too. Also has bitsetting. Perfect.

Good all round drive, has issues with 8 speed TTG02 discs (TDK/Datawrite), your only able to burn at 4x. Bar that a good drive.

Comments posted by Nik_Doof from United Kingdom, February 02, 2006. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

My LG GSA-4167B produced in China, DL10, July 2005.
Write quality is good on discs: DVD+R Genius 8x, DVD+R eProformance 4x.
Also it can normally write DVDRW Verbatim 4x.
Very bad note: it can't write TDK Scratch Proof disks. At the Lead-in Nero say: "Burning failed"

P.S. Sorry for grammatical errors in my post, it isn't main language in my country.

This burner was going to replace my Pioneer 109, but it has dissapointed by not being able to write to Datawrite Titanium 8x printable, nero comes up with 'invalid block address' every time I try to use these disc's, and it would seem that the LG 4167b does not like the TTG02 dye used on the datawrite disc's. So my Pioneer is back in business again using up all my Datawrite dvd-r's. It does burn to Ritek media OK and Ridisc 16x discs as well.

Still love the Pioneer as it seemed that everything you chucked at it it burned, the unit was getting noisy that was the reason for replacement, and the fact that the LG reads and writes to DVD-RAM, the same format used in my Panasonic stand alone recorder.

Burns + and - well. Does a decent job ripping. I haven't
tried RAM yet.

Comments posted by pdemondo from United States, December 30, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Would give top marks, but it was shipped with DL10 firmware which required upgrading to DL12 before I stopped burning coasters and is quite noisy at full speed. With the latest firmware it now burns perfectly at 8x using Datawrite Titanium DVD-R (CMC MAG AE1). Excellent value for money as it's under £30.

VERY good drive for reading.

I have 1 old disk with many scratches. All drives which I use before (NEC 2500/NEC3540/Pioneer109) can't read all data from this disk. But GSA4167 read ALL data from this disk without any problem.
Thanks, LG! ;)

Burns the best quality with DVD+R Plextor 8x (12x possible). Plextor are real Taiyo Yuden. Try this out and this will be the best harmony und the quality with the 4167b and the plextor DVD+R 8x (also 12x if you want) are better than all of my pressed DVD`s!!! This is my own experience, but also some online tests made the same results!

Read out all my discs with KProbe.

Burns CD´s (intenso 90 min + Tevion 52 x) excellent. Tevion DVD with 8x quality not excellent but ok. With Verbatim DVD+R 16 x I got different qualities with different speeds. With 16 x I`m not happy with the quality, but with 8 x and with 12 x the quality is excellent and very good (12x). I used the new firmware DL 11. After burning I read out the quality with my secound old Lite-On LDW-811S and KProbe v2.4.3. I hope for more burn quality with new firmwareupdates.

This is the new replacement for the popular 4163 from LG... I got the retail boxed version for only £4 more than the OEM bare drive.

The retail box also comes with:
Nero Express 6.6 - easy CD and DVD making software
InCD - for drag and drop easy backup
Nero Backitup - name says it all.
Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 - DVD playback software
Cyberlink PowerProducer Gold - DVD authoring

Also comes with software to update firmware (which caused a fatal error on my pc, so I don't suggest using it, go to LG website and get an easy to install firmware update from there instead - my drive dated July 2005 came with firmware DL11 and I updated to DL11 no problems)

Also comes with 4 screws, basic IDE cable and very basic audio cable.

All in all it is (so far) and excellent drive.

Also note this model is not as deep as other models, it measures 17.2cm front to back instead of 19cm on my other drives.

Fast and cheap (60$). With DVD+R 4.7Gigs it takes 5 minutes to burn a movie. Best price/speed/quality ever. Great buy.
Don't ask yourself the question and go for it.
