I used it one time and it worked ok. Then I moved it to a different pc and my computer says it's DVD-RW, when I put media in it, it thinks its a CD-Drive and my software won't recognize it as a DVD burner. I have latest firmware 2.60, but no go. And HIVAL support is lousy!

I bought the drive at staples. I allready have an external pioneer 4xdvd-r/rw drive, but they were having a special 50% off all clearance items sale, and the drive was $77 on clearance. I figured for under $40 what could go wrong? I've actually been pretty happy with it, despite it not being an 8x drive, being able to burn dvd+r/rw is nice, and the read speeds seem to have more zip.

Bought from Compusa over xmas03. It's an Accesstek DD0203 as labelled on the unit! Firmware 2.15 The latest, 2.50, require DOS Floppy install which I don't have on my p4/winxp-sp1 machine.

Try Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x, Fujifilm DVD-RW 2x (2 out of 3, I believe the media was at fault in this case) with no problem for DVD video bkup. Used DVD Decripter, DVD Shrink 3.1, Nero 5.5.10

Used numerous CD-R brands, all successful.

Overall, works as advertise. Only missing Accesstek Inc. support for a window interface firmware flash program!

A Christmas 2003 present bought for $99.99 from Staples.

I had the 'coaster' problem prior to looking here.

I tried going through the 'chat' support system & was advised to try 'WWW.IOMAGIC.COM' to look for available firmware upgrades.

Lo & behold, the drive is an IOMAGIC IDVDRW4D.
Followed the support system on their site and found the firmware for 'GENERIC DVD DUAL 4xMAX' on their site fairly easily.

The 1st DVD burn I tried using the copy of Nero provided with the burner came up with a verification error, but played perfectly on my DVD Video player. (I check the stretch of the movie on the disc against the VOB on my HD).
But, I have yet to recieve an error using Nero 6 Ultra.

I just bought this drive at COMPUSA for 79.99 (including rebates)and had it built in by them, too. It has worked absolutely fine. No coasters so far. I burnt Memorex DVD+RW, Verbatim, TDK and cheap generic CD-Rs and C-RWs. Everything delivered the expected results. I highly recommend this drive.
In the device manager it says it is a Generic DVD RW 4XMAX. In the drive's box there was a support telephone # for HI-Val, which is the same as I/OMagic. In other words, I am not sure what brand drive I exactly have. If anyone has an idea how I can find out who made this drive, let me know.

I thought that this drive was an Optorite... it said DD0201. BUT, I read in a forum somewhere that the real company that puts these out and supports them is Accesstek. You can go to the website and download the latest firmware that installs NO PROBLEM!! Just make sure you select the OEM version and not there own packaged version.

This drive works great!!!

I bought this drive at CompUSA for $79.99 on sale after mail-in rebate. Installed it with no problems and proceeded to create a nice collection of coasters.

Before pulling it out and packing it back up to bring back to CompUSA, I decided to check around the web to see if there were any fixes out there. I found this forum and read about the firmware updates on www.rpc1.org (shown in a post below). I downloaded the 2 latest official Optorite upgrades (2.30 and 2.50) and flashed the drive a couple of different times (my Hi-Val drive is an Optorite DD0203) with no success: More coasters (i.e., continued to get error messages indicating "tracking errors"). Then, as a last resort, I used the "patched" version of the 2.30 firmware posted by the Dangerous Brothers on the www.rpc1.org website for the DD0203 drive and - Ta-da! - the drive worked! No more errors! I've burned over 25 CD's/DVD's since flashing to that firmware and no more coasters.

Hope this helps!

Bought this item for $100 at CompUSA. Had some troubles at first, turned out to be software. Was using DVD X Copy Express and it burned 2 coasters. Moved from that to Platinum and burned around 35 DVDs, with no failures. Now I'm using DVD Shrink/Nero and it works great.

Had this drive for 1 month and now it is making great costers for all formats (DVD and CD). The tech support sucks, no one is online and no one answer the phone. Everytime I send an e-mail to them they keep on sending me aspi update program and I tell them in the e-mail that I have already done that. I would recommend very highly against getting this burner. Spend the few extra bucks and get a better drive.

I am having toruble burning DVD. I can burn CD and play DVD. When I try to bun DVD it will say "E; Not accessable".
I have tried to burn DVD-R , DVD+R and DVD-RW, same problem in all three.
Any suggestion to resolve this issue.

Purchased at CompUSA in December 2003, paid $99.99 after rebates. Install instructions were limited to installing as a master drive. Nothing in the documentation explained how to set the jumpers to make it a secondary drive (which my Dell required), I figured this out myself, but it would be a big problem for a lot of people.

The bundle software is great I recieved authoring, editing, software for turning home recorded media into custom DVDs. Also recieved the full version of the standard editon of Nero Burning ROM (big surpise since this wasn't listed on the box, on the box it just states "includes DVD burning and editing software").

Fired up Nero and tried doing a normal CD copy first, worked great (burned at x24 speed), then burned a DVD-ROM to backup PC files (used Memorex DVD+R 4x media, worked great), then launched DVDXCopy and tried to backup a commerical DVD, made a few coasters using Memorex DVD+R 4x media (using default burning engine), switched to the Nero burn engine option and killed the DirectCD process (as advised by 321Studios) and DVDXCopy worked great.

Overall an outstanding value, great bundle software, poor documentation. Since HI-VAL is a CompUSA brand and they openly repackage other vendors products I'm not sure you'll get the same deal. My drive looks identical to a friends Optorite burner so I believe they are the same.

I don't know what the advantages are to upgrading firmware, but if you wanted to it would be a bit confusing as the HI-VAL website doesn't even list DVD-RW products, so you're stuck with the generic drivers Microsoft provides with Windows (better have XP) -or- rely on the burning software to reconize it (which Nero does). I see no need to update this since the Nero software burns at 4x with no problems and uses the full 8-MEG buffer.

The drive worked straight out of the box. No software or firmware upgrades were needed. So far I have burned a DVD-R and it plays just find on my DVD player. I paid $99 for it at Staples. Definitely worth it. I will be posting my comments on different brands of media as I try them.

Bought unit right after Thanksgiving from Comp-USA--$90 after rebate. Mine is definitely the Optorite DD203. I've upgraded the firmware to 2.30. At first, even though the DVD burner said it was burning at 4X (for DVD+R), I was only transferring about 100MB/min (<2MB/sec). My Secondary IDE controller stated it was using PIO Mode 4. I tried to remove and reinstall the primary & secondary IDE drivers, which didn't change the write speed. I then loaded the INTEL Application Accelerator (IAA). The Secondary IDE controller now reported UDMA-2 (33 MB). When I burned my next DVD, I averaged over 250MB/min, something in the area of 4.25 to 4.50MB/SEC, which is close to the rated speed. I also noticed the BUSY light barely lights and the WRITE light is on almost all the time--which sounds like normal behavior. Before IAA, the reverse was true.

For $90, and no coasters so far--I think this is a good deal.

So far I have a wonderful coaster collection. It will burn a CD but I have only once gotten the DVD to burn to a DVD-RW(supplied) and never to the DVD-R (Memorex). The disc looks like it burned but it will not read in the drive that burned it. "E; Not accessable"

I've had a few problems with creating coasters, so I started digging into it some. It seemed like as long as I restarted my computer before I burned the DVD, I seemed to not have any problems. If I tried to burn two in a row without restarting, I always seemed to have problems.

I started to try and figure out who built this drive, which is what led me to this site.

Some of the previous posts indicate that the HDVDRW4D purchased from CompUSA is manufactured by Optorite. While that may be true for some of them, it is NOT true for all of them sold under that Hival Model #.

After downloading DVD Info Pro (http://www.dvdinfopro.com/), I found that the Drive Information data did not match screenshots from others who had the Optorite drive The Optorite drive returns something like "Generic DVD RW 4XMAX" in the Drive Information screen, while mine returned "DVDRW IDE1004".

Searching the web for IDE1004, it became apparent that I have a drive manufactured by BTC. You can download the latest firmware on their website www.btcusa.com. Rumors are that they will be releasing a 047 version of the firmware in another day or so.

Hope this helps....

Phil

I bought this drive at compusa for $89.99 after rebate.

I already have a pioneer dvr-106d drive and wasn't expecting much, but I was surprised.

This hi-val drive reads twice as fast as the pioneer and writes slightly faster also.

the pioneer burned compusa dvd-r's at 1x, but with this drive it burns them at 2x.

I didn't have to mess with firmware updates like the pioneer, it worked strait out of the box.

I love this drive and will get another one.

It looks exactly like the iomagic drive. Can anyone verify if it is the same drive?

The buffer is 8MB (as reported by Nero that came with the drive). I've heard that some early firmwares cause drive only to report 2MB.

I've burned four of the 1x CompUSA generic DVD-R discs (which are PRINCO). The first one was a coaster. The other three were okay (did byte-by-byte comparison to verify). I presume the first one was a coaster because I burned all of the discs at 2x since I didn't know they were 1x discs (not labelled).

This is an Optorite DD0203/Sanyo drive. The official and beta Optorite DD0203 firmwares at www.rpc1.org work on this drive. I upgraded to the 2.30 beta to unlock the drive itself for all regions.

I have used this for over 3 weeks. I am yet to have one coaster. THis drive burns and rips great. I paid 89.00 after rebate and got a great deal for a dual burner. I would highly recommend it.
