Bought this drive in Oct 04. Now it doesn't write DVDS or CDs. Downloaded new version of Nero but this didn't help. store I bought it from has closed. It hangs at burning at 1%. Totally screwed. Any advice?

Had mine for about 10 months - I've well over 100 DVD-r's, mixed media type [TaiyoYueden, FujiFilm, Maxell I think, etc.] over half of that at 8X.
Just upped to 0060, no test yet. BTC has totally DROPPED any mention of DVD writers on their website!! Where can i find a media list for 0060? [didn't get the firmware from BTC]

Good with Bulkpaq Orange -R 8x

I jave been using this drive for about 6 months. Overall I have had very little problems with it.

I was looking for a bitsetting option on this drive. I found it at:

http://www.btc.com.tw/english/3-1-4driver_download_dvd_dual.htm

It is however a little awkward. The utility does not change the setting in the hardware. You have to have the bitsetting program open and running in the background until the end of your burn. As soon as the utility is closed the drive goes back to the original settings.

Used for 9 months now, burned over 100 discs. Does a great job. I use DVD-Decrypter mostly for burns and it works well.

Did experience a problem with firmware 0159 where Device Buffer varied from 25%-75% and burns were at less than 2x on 4x media.

Just changed to firmware 0060 (latest - I know the number is smaller than 0159) and the problem is totally gone.

Have done a couple of dozen burns over 6 months using Maxell 4x & 8x media (MXL RG02 & MXL RG03) with latest firmware as of 11/04 (0159) The RG03 isn't even listed on the official support list (the RG02 is) but it has burnt them w/o problems (burns done at 2x). No problems.

I've made about 60 DVD back-ups with Memorex and TDK 4X DVD+Rs and I've only had about 3 coasters which in my opinion is not that bad. Two out of three of those coasters happpend after installing WinXP Media Center Edition, but after flashing the firmware, I've been burning without a problem. Despite the bad reputation this drive has for not recogizing discs or hanging at 22%, I still think this drive was worth every dollar paid. Maybe I just got lucky!

bought this for cheap (about 60 bucks after rebates) a couple months ago. Had problems in the beginning, but since then have made sure i always have the most current firmware, it works fine. I have burned about 150 dvd+rs and dvd-rs, with no problem since upgraded to FW 785. Have only burned at 4x though, still trying to get a hold of some 8x media that will work

Comments posted by chris from United States, July 16, 2004. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

Bought the writer 4 months ago worked fine for 3 months. Now for no reason it will not read or write cd's of and description. Tried flashing it with latest firmware upgrade, still no good. The daft thing is it still reads and writes DVD's with no problem. E-mailed BTC help line they said the drive is screwed, take it back for an exchange unit, only problem is the place I bought it from has closed down. Live and learn!

Bought this burner at Staples on-sale. Spent a couple of days to get it to even burn DVD's. Original firmware was 0054, now upgraded to 0758. Had to play around with the cables. Now have it set as the slave to my DVD-ROM on the Secondary ide. The Pinnacle and Inter-Video software that came with it are trash. Already had Nero 6.3 and Cybervideo Power DVD XP. Bought Memorex 8X DVD+R media. Downloaded DVD Cloaner II ripper software. What movies I have backed-up will only play on 2 of my 3 computers and neither of my stand-alone DVD players. Sure, they have good moments, but have lots of skips, hang-ups and degradation. Can't understand why no problems at all on the 2 computers. One has Windows 98 and one has XP Home. My XP Pro computer and the 2 players encounter the same problems at the same spots on each disc. There aren't a whole lot of choices out there in the stores for 8X media. And, since I have visited the BTC site I see that the Memorex media that I have is not listed as one of their compatible media formats. Only 1 more of those left out of a 15-pack. Anybody need some coasters?

Got this one on sale. Burned everything fine. If you are using questionable dvd media, I suggest burning at 2x. I burned one at 4x and would not play in my stand alone dvd player, however 2x DVD did work.
This drive is so quiet, you'll appreciate the reason why they put lights on it, so that you know it's working.
Update the latest firmware onto this baby and you'll be happy. I 'm using the 0657 version and I'm happy.

to get error free burns, you need to upgrade firmware to v 358

BOUGHT IT ON CHRISTMAS.IT'S TRUE THAT I HAD TO UPDATE FIRMWARE BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S A CRUCIAL MATTER.IT CO-OPERATES FINE WITH MY PC (PENTIUM 1.8,512 RAM,120 HD).IT'S REALLY SILENT WHILE WRITING.HAVE WRITTEN OVER 20 CD'S AND 30 DVD'S.ONLY HAD PROBLEM WITH SOME PRINCO 4X DVD-R THAT FOR SOME REASON I HAD TO EJECT AND RE-INSERT 2 OR 3 TIMES UNTIL IT RECOGNIZED IT.BUT ,EXCEPT THAT LITTLE THING,I'M VERY SATISFIED AND IN A VERY LOW PRICE

NO ISSUES! I love it had it for over 2mos burned 20+ dvd+r movies one dvd-rw and at least 20 cd-r's useing anydvd and dvdxcopy plat and nero...
I use mostly optirite dvd+r 4x blanks they play on like 7 consumer dvd player I've tested so far. The only read problem i have had was on a old pc dvd reader 2 or more year old. It was pakaged as a i/o magic. SUPER QUIET, put dangerous bros 55 flash on it. ITS ALL GOOD but no bitsetting options yet. Not sure if I need that anyhow...

Had trouble with this drive switching to PIO mode unexpectedly, which ended up being an issue with my VIA IDE controller. Some advice-- verify that the BIOS settings for the drive are set to Auto and the controller is set for DMA, and load the latest Via drivers from http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300. Drive now screams and does perfect burns.

I also bought this Pacific Digital Mach 8(BTC 1008IM)at OfficeMax for $80, OUT-THE-DOOR! It was a sub for one that was on sale. I installed it with no problems on my P4 2.6, Asus P4800 Deluxe, 512MB, and 175G hard drive computer. Firmware is 54, have not upgraded to 55 yet. It works great. No problems using DVD-X-Copy and a 4x TDK DVD+R. Don't know what speed it burned at, but it was about 24 mins. Have not found any 8x media on the market so far. I love it and it was well worth my money. Got both of my brothers to pick one up also.

Bought an I/O magic model 1008 8x DVD burner for $89
at Staples. It successfully burned 2 DVDs, then
failed during the 3rd DVD burn. It never worked again
even for reading CDs. It lasted one whole evening.
Its going back to Staples. Beware.

bought as emprex 8x(btc 1008). updated firmware to 55. so far no probs with one exception...DO NOT BUY CHEAP MEDIA. otherwise works great. very quiet burner(kinda scary). nero 6 and dvd shrink works great along with with alcohol 120

[I/O Magic rebadge] Either resets my PC (eg. reset button), or locks it up completely upon disc access. Can't keep itself in DMA mode -- reverts to PIO without rhyme or reason. SVCD's take minutes to load before playing choppingly, at best. Tried all available firmware versions to no avail. I've already exchanged once -- it's going back for good. Highly unrecommended.

i just got this and i am having communication failure with it. it just can't seem to write. BTC site is no good

not very good ...I get read and write errors. It is going back to the store!

I've got one from Sam's. Pacific Digital u-30201 rebagged...
No problems burning with DVDXCOPY. No coasters, but only burns at 1x with this software. I am trying Nero 6.0 tonight to see if I can burn faster. I'm using Verbatim DVD+R 4X media.
