BenQ DW822A Double Layer Upgradeable Firmware B3JCY 13.10.04

Comments posted by Weissnicht from Germany, October 14, 2004. Rated this writer No rating.

Love this burner! Did a LOT of research at clubcdfreaks on this and others. This drive is well known to prefer + disks. It also allows bitsetting to DVD-ROM. I burn Arita/Ridata (RICOH JPNRO1 4x disks at 8x (patched firmware B3IC) and get perfect burns as per KProbe scan. PI average under 9 and PO (PIF) under 3-4. 10000/500 or so for both respectively. About 8 min and 40 sec. for full disk burn.

Do your research. All drives do not burn all media the same, and some are very fussy! Don't use crap/cheap media. Do your research!

Some quick comments;
This drive is supported by Nero ver. 6.3.0.6 and up (6.3.1.17).
Use Nero General clean tool to clean up old versions of Nero if installed previously.
I've had some media combatibility problems with both CD and DVD's. Burnt a few CD & DVD coasters. Using firm. B3IC.
Prodisc S03, 4x -R's work very well. Maxell 4x +RW's work fine as well.

Finding a media this drive likes is important.

The price is right and dual layer upgradable.....we'll see.

got it for £40 on ebuyer so it's still a bargain, despite what others say, although it will not even recognise my swisstec by sky media dvd-r disks, that my old panasonic 2x dvd-r drive does,
seems to be o.k with my zero defex dvd-r g03 disks and the supplied dvd +r/rw disks.
with the swisstec -r disks, i have to restart the computer to be-able to use the drive again as it will not do anything after putting in a swisstec disk and will not eject with eject button, only with the pin hole.
i have had a panasonic -r 2x, a nec +r and an optorite -/+r and none of them had the problems this drive has had so far with not recognising media, they have all regonised the media even if they have not burned them properly, so be prepaired to have a few problems with this drive in the media stakes.
i am using the latest firmware from the benq site=B3IC.
can't waite for the dual layer firmware upgrade, to see what thats like though.
but for the price, it's worth finding a good media disk that works with properly.

It's a good drive. Write very well in DVD's-R princo. the only problem is that sometimes when i put an cd/dvd in the drive she freezes my computer, so i will ask for replacement.

Yahoo...got this at fanspc.ca for Canadian $92 tax included and it can burn my 4X DVD+R (Maxell, Memerox) at 8X with good results, also no problem at 4X with my cheapo $25/50pieces UL-Tran disk, and it is offically upgradeable to DL DVD+R, no complaint.

Had 2 LG within the last 6 months and both failed to burn DVD after around 3 months, trying this one since I heard it can upgrade to DL burning in September and $20 cheaper than the Pioneer 107D.

So far so good, Tried a DVD and my good old Apex 1500 played them.

Let's see if they last longer than my previous LG4040 and 4081

I have had few problems with this drive turns out it was Nero giving me the problems not the drive and Memorex-r media.
I'm still in the process of determining wether or not it is a problem burning -r media but I've done "some that worked.

I've used Optodisk,Khypermedia, maxell and even some cheap dvd+r 4x media and they are all working fine they even play on my JVC standalone DVD.
Bitsetting works well and eliminates alot of incompatability issues with +r's.
I give this drive an 8

I didn't find any media yet that works. Princo and Maxell both had fail outs of over 80%.

Comments posted by Martin from Germany, June 08, 2004. Rated this writer 1 of 10.

Has worked with all media thus far. Great drive for price and features.

Comments posted by jay from United States, June 07, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

I'm rating this writer a 8 because it does it's job well for the money spent. It's only given me 2 coasters out of 25+ 4X DVD-R's so far and I think that was more related to some PC issues than the writer itself.
I haven't tested the 8X DVD+R yet but so far this was a good uprade from my old single mode 2X DVD-R LG4020 writer.
It was easy to use right out the box and I use Nero for my burning needs.
Not sure if maybe some of these are being shipped faulty or not as I see others have negative experiences with this writer.

I must agree, this is truly a piece of CRAP! First, the one I bought was defected. So I sent it back and waited for over a week for the replacement. The replacement came, I still had problem - it couldn't even read the DVD-R it just written. So I called the store and they told me to upgrade to the latest firmware (B3HC) which I did. It then could see the DVD-R it burned, but that was it. No other DVD-ROM or DVD players can read it. So I called for support again and this time, I was told to use PRINCO brand. I went out and bought couple of PRINCO 2x DVD-RW for testing. Guess what? I burned it successfully with Nero 6, but when I tried to read it back, it said "invalid function" and none of other DVD-ROMs could read it either. This is my first product from BENQ and probably a last one. Too much hassle for me to return it (bought it out of town so with restocking fee and shipping, not worth it) or else I would have done it.

DAMN !!

This writer is pure CRAP !!!!
Up-graded the firmware and still only made me toasts, using Nero Ulead Dvd Workshop and Veritas, tried SEVERAL media brands +/- r/rw (even get me errors writing -Rw !)

Going to take it back rigt now !!!

Comments posted by Dcent from Portugal, June 03, 2004. Rated this writer 1 of 10.

I had a lot of compatibility problems at first, couldn't get anything to play on my set-top dvd player or ps2 no matter which media I used, then I upgraded the firmware and everything is working much better now, so I recommend that to anyone having problems (went from B3Bc (original) to B3HC (newest at this time) upgrade. Can't wait for the DL firmware now :-)

Comments posted by Sterling from Canada, May 30, 2004. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

It should be noted that most (99%) of incompatability issues occur primarily with Windows XP (pro or otherwise). Most new cd/dvd-writers will be automaticly shunted to a secondary slave position by windows XP even with SP2, and even if the new cd/dvd writer is phyicaly (hardware) on secondary master. This occurs even if you are replacing an old drive or adding another.

Unfortunately the "right click on MY COMPUTER select manage drives" change drive letters will amost never work even in safe mode. Which will then require one to access the windows registry and carefuly alter the mounted drive devices.

It solves most media compatibility problems.

When it get's down to it. It's MS windows XP that has the most problems of the OS's. Even the slightest conflict in interfacing with a cd/dvd drive's ID will cause any number of problems.

Also software such as Roxio EZ cd/media creator (direct CD)
will cause major problems in XP if you don't have the exact update that matches your cd/dvd writer.

The manual is pretty useless. When I tried to use it as slave on the primary IDE, I had some issues. So I moved it to master on the secondary IDE. Compatability is not as good as my old Pioneer A06, but it's not terrbile. I had - what turns out to be - a media incompatability issue when I tried to use up my old Ritek's that burned perfectly at 4x on the Pioneer - they just wouldn't work using Nero 6.3.16. I did burn one using RecordNow, but since that program is not my first choice... I'm looking for cheap media alternatives. It does burn my Fujifilm and Imation 4x DVD's at 8x. It works well with DVD Shrink and TMPGenc DVD Authour. It's nice to have the advantage to upgrade the writer to dual layer.

Comments posted by Earl from United States, April 28, 2004. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

video -Rs (Ritek, Memorex, Optodisc) burned by this don't work on my Philips DVP642/17, but they work fine on Cyberhome CH505. Note that the same media, same movie, if burned by Sony DRU 510A, works fine on both Philips DVP642 and Cyberhome CH505. I emailed BenQ Tech Support and waiting for their reply.

Very nice, does a much better job than a Lite-on 851s uising the smae type of media. Nanya 4X/RW.
