My 1st Benq 1650A performed phenomenally. After booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom,good luck on finding any drives that won't recognize them.

Purchased a 2nd 1650A,slightly used from Ebay and just like my other 2 1620s,1640,and 1650-All awesome drives.

It'll burn everything I slap in it: AML,UME,Prodisc,Cmags,MBI,but really loves Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim,Ricoh, maxell hitachi, and ritek media. Playback issues skyrocket with the AML,UME,Prodisc, cmags, and MBI. Give this drive good media and you'll have very few issues.

Good luck on trying to kill a Benq, they don't die easily. But 1 drawback: Lite-on bought out Benq so no more awesome Benq drives. You'll have to find them on ebay or other odd sites.

My 1st Benq 1650- Avg 1 coaster every 500+ backups!!!

Good drive but, there are some issues. it runs fairly hot even with the fan feature that has vents on the sides. doesnt seem to like the benq media i got free after rebate with 8 shipping at meritline. not sure why but it seems to get bad errors at the last gig of the disk. seems to work best at 4x with most media for me. good media can burn at any speed, oddly bad media seems to favor faster speeds. so best bet is to try qsuite and see which scan looks the smoothest. sometimes oddly enough faster is better, doesnt compute logic to me, but i guess theres different methods of burning faster thats better with new cheap media. so with bad media i burn at around 4-8x only and tend to keep the files in front of the disk under 3 gb like xbox backups. i tried also adding par2 files to archives now just incase, and placing the par files at the end of the disk buy using nero, and placing the priority of the par files on High like the DC days. im using the offical firmware from the benq site now. wish i had not changed it cause the old one on the drive was newer. had to do a region change with the newst firmware, but reverted back to the online usa firmware. Qscan apparently isnt stable, cause i got a few lock ups already with that program. or maybe its something else but i dont like it! Overall i like this drive over my old hacked nec 2500a drive that i sold off to get this one[ebay;)] The best feature that benq drives have is the error checks with i use almost all the time. If is a red sector then ill reburn something thats important. Use good dvd media its just worth the piece of mind unless theres a super cheap deal, just make sure you check your burns all the time. im anal about that kind of think. im gonna try to stick with ridata sony, vertabim, and best taiyo Yuden media. Which i hear are the best... best of luck to you all...great site btw, dont think i would have got this drive without videohelp.com

Superb drive! Worth every single cent when i replace my aging NEC2510 drive. good firmware.. superb features and my burns are perfect even when using cheap unbranded media.. i'm using the retail version of DW1650 btw..

Last Autumn we got a BenQ DW1640 from Newegg for my wife's machine, and have been so impressed with it that towards the end of April I ordered a DW1650 from Newegg for myself. It was a weekend special for $35.99 and free shipping. To date it has performed flawlessly on "imation" DVD+R 8X media(MBIPG101 R04); with overspeed burns at 12X scoring in the 94-97 range on Nero's Disk Quality tests.

One odd thing that I have noticed is Everest v2.20.405(aka Aida32) shows our DW1640 as being manufactured by BenQ, but it shows the DW1650 as having been manufactured by New Universe Technology Inc.; who the heck are these guys?!?! Even after a firmware upgrade from BenQ to "BCHC" the DW1650 still shows as having been made by New Universe Technology Inc.

All that aside, except for a bit of noise at high speeds it is proving to be a fine unit. The noise has caused me to give it a rating of 9, instead of 10. It is still quieter than my Lite-On LTR-52327S CD-R.

I hope that this review helps anyone interested in the DW1650; at the price I paid it is really a value.

I purchased this drive 05-16 from Newegg. Installed via IDE in my Dell E510 and also was used as a pseudo-external burner via USB to IDE adapter. Nero 6.6 "Test Drive" revealed excellent read and write speeds and this burner produced beautiful recordings with a variety of media including Verbatim 16x +/- Rs, Fuji 16x -Rs, Office Max (MCC) 16x +/- Rs as well as Ridata 4x +RW and 2.4x -RW. During this time, no DL media was tried. On 05-27, the unit began to exhibit severe read errors and major speed fluctuations. During additional read tests on 05-29, unit failed repeatedly, displaying very ragged speed curves resulting in repeated unrecoverable read error shut-downs. On 06-01, the burner stopped working and was returned for a refund. My low rating for this drive reflects the reliability (or lack of, as the case may be) factor, not the impressive read and write capability when the unit was working properly. Currently, I am debating the purchase of another DW1650, or moving on to the new NEC ND-4570A.

I have this writer for a couple of weeks now and i just have one word for it: Great! Burnt serveral media (+R(W)/-R(W) at highest speeds without any problem. It loves +R media. Haven't tried de DL media yet (waiting for lower prices). The QSuite software is very handy. On the BenQ website they have published a TOTAL list of all supported media (with mediacodes) for this drive, what do you want more? Just buy this drive!

Excellent burner, burns everything from crap media to good media near perfectly at good speeds though slowers speeds(8x or less) give alot more errors.

Comments posted by Mark Haven from Netherlands, April 09, 2006. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

This is a sweet drive. Anyone buying this drive: Update to the latest firmware/Download qsuite 2.0- It'll set the booktyping in case a few of the 1650's may not be already set to booktype. Qsuite also features Solid burn to help control how this burner burns different MID coded media. It actually learns the best way to burn them. Also has qtest to check blank dvds to see if it can burn them.

Also ditch for dash format. After booktyping with this drive, good luck on finding a stand alone player that won't play them.

Watch the Burn speed. This drive, just like the 1640 performs better at faster speeds. 8x and 12x scans are way better than the 4x. Do not burn 2.4x speed with this drive. Too many crc errors.

I only used taiyo yuden media on this drive. Yuden000-T02 and Ty-g02.

Benq drives are the best drive for the buck!

My nec2500 weared out after 3000DVD's. So i changed brand and bought Benq.
No probs. Burned em all. Firmware flash was very easy.

cons- Little noisy but it's in my download basement anyway.
Led stays on when a blank disc is inside. Could be a pro too.
