I've got problems with reading(!) DVD-DLs, it always hangs on changing the layer. I also had problems with erasing discs (CD-RW and DVD+RW), it functions coincidentally. No problems with writing&reading CD+-R and DVD+-R. I thing error correction works not very good, it has problems with scratched CDs/DVDs.

Intermittent problems with writing to all media - less than 20% burning success rate. Coaster mashine. Bought from "Factory Direct".

Comments posted by logon from Canada, November 29, 2006. Rated this writer 1 of 10.

Bought from Costco about 6 months ago I have successfully burned many Mitsumi DVD -R but with a small number of failures. I have not, however, been able to burn ANY CDRs (TDK or Maxell) and therefore would NOT recommend.

Great burner!! No coaster's yet with my 25 pack of Maxell DVD-R's. Picture quality great on all my Dvd players(especially on the dual layer dvd copies). Works great with Nero Recode. Make sure jumper settings are correct, espically if dasiy chained with another ROM. Not bad for $60 CDN.

don't burn above 4x or you will be sorry

I found the 8x Aopen an excellent machine for burning discs. Even burnt directly on the fly without using the harddrive.
It's important that the jumper settings are correct. I found that having this machine daisychained on the same ribbon with the dvd rom to the secondary on the motherboard. I set both units to the CSEL setting. I passed on my unit to my relative after a year and now have a 1616 16x Aopen ...it does not burn directly on the fly by passing the harddrive and fails in the burn. I suspect that my samsung dvd rom has some readibility problems. But it works well where an image is first created on the harddrive. This unit worked the best by setting it as a Slave and putting in on the same ribbon with the HD to the primary. Also, the type of dvds you buy is important. I have had good success with most dvds except for Sony cds & dvds. Make sure you burn at a slower rate with these.

Had trouble erasing CD-RW and DVD-RW right from the start (all brands). Eventually received an error message from DVD Decrypter "tracking servo failure". This unit was itself a replacement for a failed Lite-On, that only refused to burn CD's. Cannot rate this unit fairly as it was faulty from the start.

Never had any use for +RDL. A nice cosmetic touch was the inclusion of alternate bezels for different colored PC's.

works fine for me all in all .just needed a bit of tweeking after i installed. have it in-line with a dvd rom with no troubles on a p3dell

Try using U-Lead DVD Workshop 2, I did everything that is on these posts from updating firmware to high-end media with no results. So I tryed different burning software and bingo. I am now able to burn anything -R,+R, Cheap Office depot brand DVD's with no problem.

Best of luck, Kurt

Still having no problem with my DUW1608/ARR. I'm using RiData 4x DVD+R (media code RICOHJPN-R01-002) and have burnt many without producing a single coaster. CD-R/RW also burn fine.

Are you guys using the proper cable with this drive? It requires an ATA-66 80-conductor IDE cable and will not work properly with the older type of cable. The IDE controller on the motherboard also has to support ATA-66.

I too bought my AOPEN drive from newegg. the transaction was flawless of course. If only the drive was as reliable! Bought the first one and made coaster of first 8 attempts. Put my old 4x back in worked great. RMA'd it...of course newegg had not problems sending me a second one. Same issue. Even after updating firmware through AOPEN site. I wouldn't recommend this drive to anyone.

Time to return it to newegg and purchase a more reliable brand. That's what I get for trying to pinch pennies!

I can find nothing wrong with this DVD burner. Picked mine up from Newegg recently, and updated firmware to the latest version. This is as good as any AOpen burner I've owned before (= really good). So far I've burned some 4x Riteks (R03-02), Memorex CD-R's and various CD-RW's and they're all flawless and with low block error rates. Supports changing booktype with DVD+R and DVD+RW too. I don't really understand the previous negative comments on this drive, however it could be due to older, immature firmware.

First one was returned after just writing enough each time to make to make some coasters.Replacement behaves just won't write to ANY of my TDK media. My TDK burner AID+440N
runs just fine so its those drive and not my system.

Is very picky about the discs you used. First I used 4x noname discs and they worked flawlessly. I then bought 8x Ridata discs and after burning them, I could not read them in any of my drives. Worked fine with Ridata 16x DVD+ discs however.they are not compatible with my stand-alone player. As soon as I can find a steady disc that works well, I will be happy with this burner.

Bought at Coscto in Canada for $119.99. Piece of crap, nothing bought problems trying to backup movies..save your money, buy an NEC or Pioneer, thank God I bought it from Costco so I can return without issue, I will be picking up the NEC 3520

Absolutely will not write Sony DVD-RW's. Works wel with TDK DVD-RW's. Worked well with both Memorex DVD-R and el cheapo no name purple backed DVD-R's. Pretty good for the Money IMO. Purchased on special at NewEgg for $65 including shipping.

Burns successfully with Princo DVD-R. The best media for this writer.

Comments posted by Brunix from Portugal, January 14, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

I have one hooked in-line with a cd-rom and it works fine except for burning 2x media I had left over from a pioneer AO-3 I removed from this computer. Bought some Maxell 4x dvd-and+r's and they work fine. Have not had a chance to do a double density disk yet but will check it out soon.
KennJ
P.S. Paid 56 dollars so I can't really fuss as long as it works reasonably.

Comments posted by KennJ from United States, January 04, 2005. Rated this writer No rating.

I bought two of these for Christmas presents. I upgraded the firmware to 1.06 (AOpen has had a number of firmware upgrades recently) and MADE SURE I USED AN ATA-66 CABLE as required for this drive. Had no problem burning a couple movies at 16X with Verbatim media and Nero.

It's not the best DVD burner out there (DL is limited to 2.4X), but it does function.

Comments posted by xerxes from United States, January 02, 2005. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

Did aany of you update the firmware before running this model by chance?

Is this drive really all that bad??

Comments posted by David Carmichael from United States, December 08, 2004. Rated this writer No rating.

I can't give a rating as of yet as I have not had much time to fool around with this drive yet. However I have backed up two of my PS2 games flawlessly, one which I could not seem to get backed up with my previous burner. I still haven't been able to test the DL function of the drive as media is so damn hard to find(Only seen them selling at Future Shop). Not to mention the cost of the discs. But the drive has been working great with my Memorex DVD-R 4x Data-Video, Memorex DVD+RW 4X and Verbatium DVD+RW DataLife Plus 2.4X.

I wrote the previous comment and want to add to the message:

My dealer let me return the drive and gave the money back. I bought a Nec3500A and this one works flawlessly as reported in many reviews. Using the same computer, Ide port and software.

So the failure of two Aopen DUW ARR devices has nothing to do with my computer, connection or software.

Successfully writes Traxdata CDR's at 40x speed.
Reads DVD's well.
Fails to write a single bit to a Sony DVD-R (write error).
And even fails to simulate writing to a DVD-R (write error).

My dealer offered a second device for testing. Same result.

Comments posted by Bert Kerkhof from Netherlands, October 27, 2004. Rated this writer No rating.

Fails to write to Optodisc 1x/2x DVD-R
Writes Ritek Ridisc Video Reel 4x DVD-R, but cannot then read disc.

Will succesfully write and read Verbatim 4x DVD-R.

If only Pioneer sold a silver bezel faced writer.
