This DVD-Writer seems not handling DVD-RAMs very well. When I use an Imation DVD-RAM (single-sided, single-layer) to write the data by this DVD-Writer, it reports an error when writing to the disc. Afterwards, the DVD-RAM mentioned before is now not recognized by the drive (and probably the same thing happens for other brands of DVD-RAMs).

Also, problems will then occur when reading CDs (including the pre-pressed CDs) and pre-recorded CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW. Bad sectors are reported by the drive when testing CDs and DVDs. Sometimes when bad sectors are reported when reading a disc (CD or DVD), it will not recognize any discs for several hours. In this case, a pre-pressed DVD may make the drive be able to recognize some discs, but this does not always help.

Moreover, most of the time after the writing failure of the DVD-RAM, it can only write up to half the capacity of CD-R/RWs and DVD+-R/RWs, and after a couple of writing, it may not recognize any CD-R/RWs or DVD+-R/RWs at all.

This DVD-Writer is, in my opinion, of bad quality, even though it supports almost all types of CD/DVD medias (including DVD-RAM). Actually, only double-layer DVD+/-Rs are not supported. However, the most valuable feature of this drive (reading and writing DVD-RAM) does not work properly.

I got this burner a couple of weeks ago. It worked fine to start, but I got an error burning a dvd-r and it stopped reading or writing to any disk. I updtaed the firmare and it seemed to work, but it again failed to burn.

I took it out and reinstalled it and then it would read disks, but when I tried to write it failed again. Now it goes from reading cd's and not reading dvd, to the other way. It won't burn to dvd's at all now and will only occasionally burn to a cd.

DVDs burn fine if burned faster than 1x. It hasn't been good for me as I need to burn precise copies (1x) for my use, and when burning at 1x you get write errors with media like Verbatim.
But if you just want to backup data, it's fine.

This writer came already installed in the computer I bought 4 months ago. Burned fantastic on 50 Princo discs I got with the computer package. Did great with the next 30 TDk+R. worked great with Hp discs. Then all of a sudden it stopped burning to any TDk's..I upgraded the firmware and it wouldn't burn to any disc at all so I used different firmware...would only burn to Hp RW and TDK-R. I have made 20 coasters out of the last 40 discs in the past week. Now the burner won't read anything at all. Warranty is void because I upgraded the firware. Not happy at all.

I have this writer for about 7 month now. So my review will be , probably more reliable then people who "just bought it".
For first 5 month the DVD worked like a charm - no problems, can burn any media types including the cheap ones. Later on , when I finished my Vakoss DVD stock I bought another one, same type of media, just to discover that I can't use this type of media any more (probably this time the medias had lower quality). The writer was burning it successfully, but the media couldn't be read on any other DVD reader, but the writer itself. 100 % loss of cheap medias! More expensive, brand name medias, gave better results, only 10% loss.
To my mind, the laser used in the burner has a very low lifecycle,as well as power, so please, think twice before buying this one.

i struggled quite a while with this drive. i could only write certain dvd-medias. i was about returning the drive and hating lg, when a friend gave me the hint to update may ide-drivers...
now i'm happy - i don't care about media-manufacturers etc., writing at 8x no problems!

some tips before returning the drive:
1) assure DMA-mode is enabled
2) update your mainboard-bios
3) update drive-bios
3) update your ide-drivers (onboard-chipset drivers in my case)

now i hate intel, since they don't publish the latest drivers at their website. better to look at http://drivers.softpedia.com ...

hope this helps

Had drive for a few months, everything I have ever burned has been fine. Using unbranded discs from e-bay and local PC store. No complaints whatsoever. I guess there are others not so lucky.

Great drive! Burning 15 DVD (Princo, TDK, Imation) and no
coaster yet. The included sw would be better.

took back my Lg burner to store and they fixed the defective Drive but I ended up getting a Pioneer dvd burner instead. Then they gave me this crapy software called B's Gold or sumtin and now I can only burn MPEG one files!!!....WTF? so I take back the Pioneer only to get the LG back figuring "what the heck maybe itll be ok". Then I burn 6 dvd's and the 7th dvd goes out-of-sync!!!....Grrrrr....so now im like pissed again . Im gonna try 2 test burns and if I get any more out-of-sync problems ..its back to the store for the SONY that I should have got in the firsrt place!!!!!!....damn u LG...Grrrr.....!!!!! lol lol ....

i bought it like 2 moths ago, I had only burned 3 movies, howevr, one of them can`t be read in my Sony DVD player, I guess the original one had a scratch or something. I can say it has worked fine so far. It works fine with princo DVd-r discs, so don`t listen to those who say it doesn`t work with princo. Nevertheless, keep in mind that princo is a cheap dvd-r disc manufacturer and it is not recommended by LG.
I`ve bought some other LG products and I can say that they `ve been really good, the cd-rw has worked perfectly, fast thing...and the DVD Rom is excellent.

Right now I have a terrible problem, for some reason I can`t burn DVD`s when having the 3 drives connected, you know the cd-rw, dvd rom and the dvd ram drive, that is to say, the 4082b. I always get a message saying IDE-atapi connection. can anyone please help me? it works excellent when I have one drive disconnected and I have tried a million options of connecting this thing.

briefly speaking, this drive is really good. At first, i was afraid because of the price, it is real cheap yet good. besides, with the experience i`ve had with other LG products i can say that they are very good. If I find the solution for the problem I have right now with the Lg4082b I woulld say it is excellent.

I`m thinking about buying the LG home theater.
People say that korean devices brand like LG are bad, but i would say it depends more on the way you treat it. My father has a challenger home theater, people say that challenger is a piece of junk but my father`s has worked just fine.

PLease if any of you knows the solution for the problem I have for the DVD ram Drive I would appreciate if you can e mail at
alejohome@yahoo.com

thanks

Had this burner for 2 months. Burnt great using brand name such as Maxell and Memorex DVD 4X +R and 4X +RW discs. Burnt 50 discs without any problems whatsoever. Mixed results using Prodisc 4X -R, with 10% failure rate. Can only burned at 2X using Princo 4X -R discs. Disastrous results using generic DVD -4X discs made by Yi Jhan and Long Ten, and also Vakoss DVD +4X discs. Not sure the problems are due to the burner or the media discs though. The picture frames freezes a lot while watching movie on the burnt discs, especially towards the end of the movie. Overall, this is a breat burner if you stick to the brand name DVD media discs, otherwise you might be disappointed if you are using generic or not so 'brand name' DVD media.

I bought this LG dvd burner and had it for about 2 months ....made close to 50+ dvd's and all of a sudden , out of the blue the movies I was burning had out-of-sync problems. After this , the burner started to have "failed to burn" dvd issues. Took it to store , and store people phoned me in a couple of days saying the Drive was defective!!!...Im not gonna keep this dvd burner in case this happens again...Im gonna Trade mine in for a Sony IDE DWU18a. Lg dvd burners suck.

Great DVD-r +r -rw +rw Drive.... burned over 50 DVD titles... Works like a Charm.

And... for those using linux... its software... not the drive... already tried it using diferent dist. of linux... no luck...

Tried using dual boot if u wanna burn some. :P..

Let me be clear: this burner is crap. Let me be clearer: this burner HATES anything but premium media. If you read the reviews, they divide up pretty evenly between (happy) users who tried TDK, FujiFilm, Maxwell and had luck, and the (angry) users who tried Ritek, Prodisc.

And that's exactly how it breaks down. If you don't want to pay $1.40+ a disc, DON'T buy this burner. I bought a spindle of Ritek (Media ID = RITEKG04) and a spindle of Prodic (media ID = PRODISCS03) and got about a 70% failure rate.

If life were fair, I'd get not only my money back, but the time I've wasted too. Buying another burner.

Algumas empresas vendem este driver dizendo que ele é compatível com Mac. Atenção! Funciona com o Toast, mas o iTunes não o reconhece. What a Shame!

Some say it is compatible with Mac OS X. But iTunes doesn't recongnizes it.
What a Shame!

Now what do I do??

bought this drive 5 days ago.
no probs with thinkxtra 2x&4x and tdk 4x dvd-r's; some problems with philips dvd+r 8x(recognised as 4x insted it's an 8x) and verbatim dvd+r 8x (recognised as an 8x but burned as a 4x. No cds burned yet.
I've given it a 9/10 cause those problems.

I'm going down to my friendly hardware shop and swap this cr@p for a Pioneer instead. If I can't get it swapped out, I'll just purchase the Pioneer and just smash the f@ck out of this one, tear it to pieces and send it for warranty. See what they've got to say about their preciously designed and marketed product! F@ck! even Liteon or 4kus is better than this.

Can't they just write the firmwares so that it ignores what type of dye is used in it??? OR what the maximum speed that can be written successfully in it??? I believe that lies on the user's decision. As the end users, can't we just have that choice to upgrade the firmware to such thing? Besides if something goes wrong when upgrading firmwares, it's not covered by the factory warranty regardless it is the official or not anyway.

What this is, it's an attempt to try lure people that their product will support such speeds and formats but not to all types. So they keep money flowing only on their side of the f@cking boat! But sorry life is not like that. The water in the sea don't just keep rushing to shore. It flows back. Balance, equilibrium. People want cost effectiveness on the running cost (ie DVD media to use) while not compromising the speed, quality and the accuracy. Those w@nkers think that this is good. Yeah... for the little while that they can trick people. But watch the publicity go f@cking down and we'll see who's the laughing in the end reading in the paper that the company has gone down due to bankruptcy.

Never again on LG for me. Never. Piece of sh!t!!!
Life's not so good after all huh? B@stards!!!

I've just brought one and to those people that they can succesfully burn 4x on princo media, I'd say that you're full of sh!t. This burner sacrificed compatibility with features most users won't even or even get interested on using.

To LG, bad marketing decision. Bad hardware and firmware design. They should include data in the firmware about the common media that people use. I mean they sell this in Sydney and not much compatible media are available for us to utilize the product. How bad is that? The engineers that designed this product should listen to the music. They can't just start dancing to their own rythms and expect people not to say sh!t about it.

Not to mention the worst tech support available there is. People tend to get stumped and often put customers on hold to get more artillery to throw at the customer to woo them away. They kept trying to make it seem that it's my pc that has got something to do with it but a 3.2 Prescott with IC7 Max3 Board, 2GB of DDR mem, 250GB 2x SCSI RAIDed, and 500w PSU... how can you go wrong. I know where I went wrong.... picking this damn product instead of a Plextor or Pioneer. Even a humble Liteon or 4Kus are better than this pile of sh!t.

This brand was on the boom but I strongly believe that it will pretty much going to recession because people in it are f@cking thing up.

No problems burning 4xDVD+RW (Ultron)and 8xDVD+R (Intenso).
Fast and silent. I used Nero 6.3.15 and Blindwrite 5.10
Firmware A201. (I know that there is A204 available, but why?)

This Burner is complete Garbage, After installing it yetserday I have had it Lock up on me 2x, It says thru Nero it's ripping at 4x but then it takes 38 mins to Rip a disc. Then It has Failures Left and Right. Have to reboot System 3-4 times just so I can Eject Disc from Drive. I have to Say this is the Most unreliable Unit I have ever Used.

I should have Kept my Lite-on LDW-411s, With No Firmware Updates Available and no Real FAQ on the Official Website, I rank this DVD writer as the Worst unit I have ever had the Displeasure of using.
