This is the best one in 8X +/- DVD burner I would say. Got it from OfficeMax, after instant/mail-in rebate and the $10 postcard in-store coupon, it only cost me $20 plus tax and one stamp (37 cents).
You will need to flash its firmware (http://nuzhno.ru/files/2k5107v2b5dl.rar) to make it perfect for burning. I can burn it at full 8X by using Maxell DVD+R 4X media, zero defect :) Since it's NEC nd-2500a, you can do the bit-setting through DVDInfoPro after firmware flashing. It makes all my DVD+Rs look like DVD-ROM on all dvd players. I strongly recommend this piece of art :)

Just got from Officemax for only fifty bucks with rebates. It works great with Memorex DVD+R's. I played it in my PS2 and it only took two seconds to read, unlike some of the other DVD's I watch.

Just got mine from Office Max, had a $40.00 instant and a $40.00 mail in rebate for a total cost of $50.00. This is the most inexpensive unit I have found, cheaper than most 4X max DVD writers. Easy to install and east to use.

Compusa with the $30 rebate, net $89 with tax.

Ran herries 1.07 flash update.

Burnt Verbatim 2.4x and 4x that played perfectly
Burnt TDK 2.4x at 4x played perfectly
Burnt Memorex 4x at 8x played perfectly
Spent an enjoyable (wasted) Sunday playing with this drive
No complaints, works a &*$#( load better than the $349.95
Sony 500 ax piece of &$*#&$( I bought last year.

Rated 9 because it only came in black.

I too just got one from CompUSA for $109.99 minus a $30
rebate. Mine also shows up as the NEC ND-2500A

I've burned 3 DVD's using Verbatim DVD+R 8X media.
Each burned without a problem in about 9 1/2 minutes.

This burner truely rocks. It is a NEC 2500A which got 9.1 ratings from 97 users. I tested with TDK, Memorex, and Khypermedia and they all burned flawlessly. I tried watching them from my dvd player and they played perfectly without any lag.

Just picked one up from CompUSA today. $129-$20 instant savings - $30 mail in rebate = $79 (plus I had a $50 gift card so $30 is good for me).

Mine too is an NEC ND-2500A. The label on the drive says NEC with the model number clearly stamped on it. The front is black but the words Mad Dog are not on it as the picture implies.

I too have a Sony 500 that doesn't like my BeAll media but it did like the super cheap SKY and Princo media I had before. Going to give this drive a go and likely add the sony to my media PC.

Just got this from Microcenter for 129 plus there is a $40 rebate to send in. The drive comes up a NEC ND-2500A. I got it because I was have so many problems with my Sony DRU500A. The Sony work ok, but was picky on the media type and then got worse over time.
Back to the Dominator Used 3 different types of media that I have so far and all worked great and burned at 4x, the sony rarly did that. The brands i burned were;

TDK 4xDVD-R from Microcenter
Digital Matrix 4xDVD-R from meritline.com
Bencole Platinum Series 4x 4.7GB DVD-R from Microcenter

Very Happy so far
