This is an ok recorder with a few untidy edges - when starting a disc from cold through a 5.1 system it automatically starts at ear blistering full power! However it is a good cheap (only paid £40) model.

Re Alexs' question about discs i use INTENSO DVD+RW (orange case inlay) which are about 6.50 for 10. These are perfect and i have had no problems with any of the discs, picture quality is good even on ep

I like the fact that it has a USB socket hidden away on the front panel, very usefull and quirky!

Divx/Xvid playback is excellent, and KVCDs are superb giving well above VHS quality from a CD

On the whole this was a purchase from heaven.......for a change

Quality is good, also in EP Mode (4 h) is resolution as good as a VHS Tape record. Usage of the machine is ok, menus I can understand easily, several special functions have extra keys on remote (57). Sorry that it cant write CD/VCD/SVCD, but the falling price of DVD +R/+RW makes it good.

Very nice: Input for USB and DV (IEEE 1394) for easily saving DV Tapes to DVD. In HQ and SP mode (1 h/2h) the quality is really good, esp. HQ it looks some better than my most authored DVD made at PC with several programs in highest quality modes. For 'normal' usage (video from holidays) i can use SP mode, the resolution is really ok.

A big minus: the remote has really awful contacts! Pressing them 1 or 2 or 3 times, dumb feeling of the soft rubber buttons, no sensing of getting contact makes its use not funny anyway. The recorder needs at some functions 1/2 or 1 sec until responding, so its often not clear if the remote did do what it should. But the solution to this is simple: a cheap learnable remote, putting the key codes of the original in and voila - now its easy to control the recorder!

Altogether a nice machine. My doubts to the quality in relation to pc encoded DVDs are gone. No more need for recording on harddisk and encoding over hours.
Klaus

Can anybody recommend some discs that definitely work in this recorder?

I have tried:

Ricoh DVD+RW 10Pk 8x
Tuffdisk DVD-R 8x

Neither worked! I get "Error Disc" at startup and I'm unable to do anything with them.

Thanks!

As other users comments

No Macrovision, I am quite happily transferring ALL of my old clunky VHS tapes onto dvd-r.

So far only made about 2 coasters as it has not finalized disc properly after recording. But a small loss for such a brilliant machine.

Does not play large files (e.g. 1.4Gb files do not play).

Does not play DivX 5.3 (although it does play DivX 3, 4, and other sub-versions of DivX 5).

Firware upgradable and hoping for a firmware upgrade to fix above issues (+ DivX 6 support!!)

Only problem I found was watching the recordings, pre-recorded or otherwise... It doesn't output through its RF coax.
