Terrible, Terrible product.
I bought this at Target in February (for the price, of course), and by August or September, I had to get rid of it. I *wish* it had given me a "no disc" error in the beginning. Over these months, it burned countless flawed DVD's that skip badly - usually towards the end of the disc, as well as damaged some I already owned. No matter what the disc's physical appearance, chances are, it will skip and be further ruined when played.
For about $90.00, I ended up with a poor unit that I could not return, many useless DVD's, and damage done to perfectly good DVD's I tried to play in that piece of junk. Wow, what a bargain.
Unless you want to waste your time burning defective DVD's, fork over the extra cash and buy a good burner that will last! |

I bought this hoping to be able to record onto DVDs. When I did the setup there were only two options - Antenna or Cable. I have a satellite dish. When a DVD is played, the TV must be switched to Video. You can't record from this TV setting. Then I get a screen message that says NO SIGNAL. Can anyone please tell me how to make this record DVDs using a satellite dish hookup.
Thanks. |

| I was having problems with my unit - that's how I found this site -- I was looking to see if anyone else resolved their "unknown disc" problems. Well I have resolved it (knock on wood) for now anyway. I did not realize that I had the unit for over a year!! Boy how time flies. Anyway, I used the player for about 8-10 hours a week - recording and playing back... and guess what? I NEVER CLEANED THE PLAYER!! What came over me to clean it I don't know, but I had a CD/DVD cleaner, and I ran it through the Trutech twice and lo and behold, the player works great again! I really hope this has resolved it and I don't "jink" it! lol Hope this helps others. I always cleaned my CD players, but never thought to clean the DVD - plus didn't realize how long and how much I used it. Boy, more than a year and $88 is still a good deal. |

| I agree with most everyone else here, it's junk really. My unit worked great for a few months, now it does record and playback OK using +R, but other machines will not play the DVD's. It only plays back on this same machine. I'm sure it will continue to degrade and eventually cease working entirely. Be smart and buy one thats a better brand, even if it's a couple of bucks more. |

| Ok, it's not a Panasonic, but I have burned hundreds and hundreds of perfectly functioning DVDs that play in ALMOST all machines and look and sound good. I've transferred from both VHS and Laserdisc, both with excellent results. In fact, only recently have I begun to have issues and I think it is with the Philips DVD+R media that I purchased most recently. I've used many types of DVD+R and even DVD-R (in a pinch) with relatively little trouble. DVD-R can be dicey and I found it was best to format, record and finalize in one setting as sometimes it was hard to bet the machine to recognize the media once you removed it. My only complaint is that they don't give you enough characters when naming a title, so I have to abridge. Oh, and I have also discovered that DVD+RW burned on this model don't seem to play well with others. But, for the price, it does what I need it to do. |

I was looking around Target and picked this up for $50 clearanced (I thought about using it as a 2nd recorder in my bedroom as I'm very happy with my living room Panasonic recorder). For what I paid for this it's a nifty little unit. Yeah- it has the worlds WORST remote (44 buttons in a 4x11 grid and all identically sized buttons wasn't exactly a desinging marvel- I guess when I get the time I could use a multi-remote and just program THAT) and the menus are overly complicated, but it does what I ask it to do and it does it pretty well. The LP settings are weak, but the high speed modes are servicable and better and it plays everything I've thrown at it including a few "iffy" DVDs I've authored in DVD Shrink. Spilling off stuff from my DVR and my camcorder has been painless. A pretty decent "Tech" bargain but for more advanced users- NOT really "plug-and play" because of it's usability...
Pros: Value for $$; decent high-speed recording; plays most discs easily; Firewire port...
Cons: HORRIBLE remote; convoluted menus (NOT for Grandma or Tech novices); blinding blue display that pretty much lights up a dark room... |

| I bought my 2nd Trutech DVD recorder at Target because of how low the price was. Now I know why it was so low; the thing does not work. It worked in the first few months sporadically & now it does not work at all. This is a piece of junk & Target should be ashamed! It is worth the cost to buy a more efficient & well-known, tried & true product than to go for the low price. I live on a fixed income & now I am stuck with DVD's & no way to play them. I am stuck! Trutech is a piece of junk! |

P.O.S.
Worked fine out of the box until recently. Stopped recognizing any previously recorded or blank DVD+RW or DVD+R, even store rented DVD's. Unable to play or record any media. Display shows "no disc".
Bought from Target for $88. TruTech = stay away! Junk!

This is the worst piece of crap I have ever had the displeasure of owning. I purchased it because I really needed a DVD recorder for my DV camera... it has seemed to work ok for recording from the camera. What blows me away is that it WILL NOT RECOGNIZE COMMERCIAL DVDS MOST OF THE TIME. I thought it was just the scratched up copies from Netflix, but NO it wont recognize brand new, just out of the package DVD movies.
When I first bought my first machine (yes, this one is my second and it has lasted only 3 months after the first lasted about 4 months), it worked just fine for a couple weeks, then it started failing to recognize discs "Unknown Disc" and "No Disc" being common messages I would see when I popped in the kids' brand new Disney DVDs. By the 4th month it recognized NOTHING!! Machine two is now starting to recognize no DVDs either.
TruTech is certainly making money...put out an inexpensive product that works only briefly beyond the return & warantee dates, keep the cash.
I'm going to have to buy a third machine now, and you can bet it WILL NOT be a TruTech. I'm sticking with the real brand names that actually have a company standing behind the products. In the end, it is a lot cheaper!!
Save yourself money and frustration and DO NOT BUY A TRUTECH machine!! |

| I don't know what works on this dvd player/recorder because it doesn't work at all!!! I agree 100% with the person who wrote that there should be some sort of compensation from the company and/or the store. I have tried every way to connect, I've brought it to an electronics store to see if it is just me or if the stupid thing just doesn't work. Well, guess what? It's not me. I don't care if I spent one dollar on this piece of trashy equipment...it should work. For those of you who get it to work some of the time with only certain dvd's, consider yourself lucky. I really wish I did a little bit of research on Trutech before I spent the money. For me, $88 in the hole is not much of a loss, but for others, it certainly is. I think Target should drop the line entirely. |

Look, I guess you can say it gets the job done for 88$. However, it doesn't get a good job done. It works very well with tv/satellite programs. Recording from VCR is lacking. Low sound, dark picture. I adjusted the brightness and contrast, that seemed to help.
My biggest complaint is that the A-B erase only works 2% of the time. Big problem since my favorite thing to do is use the editing features on DVD recorders. Memorex +rw work about 3/4 of the time. Ritek doesn't work (disc error). Maxell recorded and then showed disc error after recording was finished, Office Depot didn't work. Real pain. I wish I could send this recorder back to TruTech. They need to figure out an exchange or return for models over 90 days old. I wish I could find a stable dvd+rw brand that works in this thing. Only buy if you are recording straight from cable or satellite box. |

I too saw this unit at Targe selling at the time for $99.00 and althought it wasn't what I was looking for exactly I decided to buy it and I've been very happy with it.
I only record using DVD-R disks (Fujifilm & Verbatim), but to date I've transfered to DVD my MP3 collection as well as my picture collection and since the World Cup started I been recording every single game, never a hitch until today when I had to record the penalty series between Ukraine & Switzerland in a brand new disc. Since the recording only lasted a few minutes when done the disc would not finalize and stopped at 99% done. No problem, I turned off the power, turned it back (to be able to open the unit since while "finalizing" it can't be opened) and the recording wasn't corrupted. Remains to be seen if tomorrow it records the remaining games as well.
But all in all, for a "cheap" DVD recorder, it has proven to be a gem. |

I bought my trutech from Target for Christmas. I was warned at the store that it was not a good product. I was thinking that it was a bait and switch... but they were right. After a couple of months I started having problems reading disks. "No disk" is what it says. It progressively got worse until it no longer will read DVDs. It will still play music DC and Fotomat picture disks but all DVDs (including store bought) are never to be seen again. I have a stock pile of all name brands and what people are saying that it reads one over another just means that it is starting to die on them. Shame that it made it just past my 90 day return period. Just don't buy it... just walk away. (I have a Go-Video DVD/VCR recorder that is two years old, works great and for the extra $100 is well worth it not putting up with the headachs I've gone through with the Trutech... I'll not buy any of their other products if this it what they sell).

This unit is not for those who just want to turn on the unit and have it work flawlessly (as you may have seen alot of unsatisfied people on this list express their anger)...you get what you pay for and alot of you cheapass's out there - me included - need to be patient with getting the correct disc to record on...this unit is NOT USER FRIENDLY so for those who have trouble with VCR's please don't waste your time cuz you'll end up writing another negative post.
I used Memorex DVD+RW to record and re-record tv programs (timed and un-timed) without any problems...Philips DVD+R did NOT work...it took me a few hours to experiment but after 4 months all is good and the only beef I have is having to reselect the "source" each time I edit the disc (using the edit button - including deleting recordings and AB deletions).
I am about to try non RW discs, so I'll post that once I can confirm they are good. |

Trutech 1620 is an abosolute piece of &#$@! I returned the first one because the menu would not show on the TV so I returned it for an exchange. Ditto the replacement. All the connections were done correctly. Now yet another trip to Target at 3 three bucks a gallon for gas. I am going to get my money back and proceed to Sam's Club and pop for a few bucks more for a Sony, Panasonic or any reputable brand. Furthermore, I do not think that Trutech has neither a customer service department nor a website. Shame on Target for selling this *#^*%@& thing!
Disgustedly yours,

| I would love to comment on this Dvd Recorder.. but I can't. We bought two of them because they were $88 each. We can't get either of them to work in either TV. We've tried EVERYTHING. I'm guessing they may be defective. I can't get the sound or the video to work on either unit. I'm returning them tomorrow. |

| I just got this TRUTECH 1620 DVD Recorder about 2 years ago when they first came out at target, and i must say this thing now only preforms well in it's gerneral purpose but also is really durable, now now many people want to try it out for durability, but i have purposely dropped it from about 9 feet high on a tile floor at almost every angle about 6 times, and when i went to plug it in it worked perfectly fine. It's a great DVD Recorder for one of the best prices you'll ever find, i also can't belive they threw in a DV port and s-video in, now that's value!! I never had any problems with any kind of media i put in there and it reads though scratches like they aren't even there. Mine is always on about 24/7 and i always like to record on DVD+RW's and yes even DVD-RW's whenever i get bored and erase them again. It has just about everytihng you ever want just the set-back is it doesn't record on DVD+DL but come on what do you expect from something that cheap in price!!. The only problem i had in it was when i booted it out the front door for no reason it came smashing on the ground and the power supply board acually cracked, but a few easy solder points fixed that up. I would diffinatly reconmened this to anyone looking for a DVD Recorder to start out with, it wrks perfectly fine and i use it to record on over 750 DVD+r's, and this doesn't count all the times i used it for DVD+RW's. This is just about the best DVD Recorder i ever used and i must say again the price over the features, the features win by a land slide, it does almost anything and is a true piece of technology. |
