OK, When i bought this around x-mas time I really like the look and feel of it and wanted it to work well for me. The HDD inside and menu's and options are all a plus.
But soon I discovered the dvd's i burned on this unit had incorrect black levels permanently etched into the dvd's, not a good thing for my valuable collection.
Even with that so called "Black level bug" I was able to find a work around and use a DataVideo DAC-100 A/D convertor to change the analog input from 7.5 IRE to the 0 IRE the toshiba is expecting and tricked it using this $200 external device into making DVD's with the correct levels.
But then i realized it won't play back any home dvd previously made on the +R side. either +R or +RW disks.
It had nothing to do with the media itself cause if they are burned with the bitsetting set to DVD-ROM instead these same +R discs will playback. So it's a deliberate Format War still being played by Toshiba on their new units, not even allowing them to at least read +R discs.
With that and a few other minor issues with the record timer I decided it just wasn't worth keeping, so back it went to Amazon.
I am sorry that Toshiba doesn't even acknowledge these issues, sort of like when Intel denied the presence of the math bug on the Pentium chip, hoping people just won't care it's there.
So if you can live with it as a DVR and not share dvd's then it might be fine for you and looks well made so that is why i give it a 5 and not a 0.
Thanks for reading this review,

Phenomenal DVD Recorder! I purchased this primarily for creating DVD's of home movies. Creates beautiful DVD's from my digital camcorder (via DV input jack, firewire). Also created great DVD's from my analog camcorder (S-Video or composite inputs).
Has VCR+ for scheduling recordings (which is much less user-friendly than TIVO or cable company DVR program guides, but VCR+ has no monthly or lifetime fees).
Records onto hard drive (80GB), DVD-R, DVD-RW or DVD-RAM disks.
Compared to this recorder, the Sony GX7 looks like a toy (I returned the Sony when it wouldn't recognize my camcorder Mini-DV camcorder for dubbing). This Toshiba has so many features and ways to control and customize your recordings. If you like LOTS of features, this is the one for you!
Black level bug? Way overblown in my humble opinion. I have tried to create it and I am pleased to report that I cannot. Most people will never notice any sort of bug (I can't see it and I'm specifically looking for it on a 53" Sony RPTV!). |

One word to describe this recorder..... Awesome!
First I'll touch on the less desirable things about this system. Yes, it is a system - acts more like a computer than an electronic device. But if you have the technical background you will be fine.
1. The remote has way too many buttons but they are designed to make recording, editing and playback easier. I guess between reading the manual and using the functions it will become second nature. But it is tough to figure out what all the buttons do and when to use them. Note that you have to lift up the cover at the bottom of the remote to find even more buttons.
2. The userguide isn't exactly the most comprehensive. But if you read it a few times you should be okay.
Everything else about this recorder is superb. The hard drive is the best feature. You can record on it and playback with no degradation at all. All the settings are preset for optimal recording and playback and should be left alone for the most part.
You can input from your VCR, camcorder, DV device, and this thing has loads of input jacks. You can even output to two different devices. The picture quality is great. Making a disc is so simple too. Heck, you can even make chapters by pushing a button on the remote during playback.
I would highly recommend this recorder. Note, you must finalize the disc to play on other devices, but everything is step by step that its hard to mess anything up. The menus aren't the greatest looking, but they are so easy to create. It will only record on DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. I have two other DVD players and my finalized disc has played on both of them. I know a 120GB model is out there, but for $400 you can't go wrong with this 80GB model. I bought it online at www.6ave.com and received it in two days with no special shipping.
One final note, you must have this unit on to watch any A/V inputs you have hooked up to it. In other words, there is no pass through on the A/V connections, but perhaps that's standard on any recorder. I highly recommend this recorder!

Bought: Dec 15 2004
Unit firmware: Z11
*Zoom bug*
When zooming in on letterboxed content, the picture is still clipped to 16:9. Unfortunate, as I like to grow the picture to 133% to undo the stairstep aliasing on an ordinary 4:3 non-anamorphic TV.
It's not an issue for 2.35 material as it's "double letterboxed" and will be able to grow to 1.85 aspect without being clipped.
I will fill in a full report later. |

| Very satisfied, but units front panel display died a month ago, everything else works. I got it to reliably switch channels on my cable box (DCT 2200) by changing cable box setup to not require enter key. Placing the IR blaster just in front of the cable box below its receiver with the blaster facing up works well. I had one freeze up but lost no data. |

| Much easier to use than the Panasonic E-50. We use the recorder in place of a VCR and we've found the quality of the video and the audio to be very good. We also find the operation to be easier than the E-50. |

1st, the bad: Unable to change the channels correcly via timer recording. Of the numerous (10+) times that I've set programmes to record that are on different channels subsequently, only once did it actually change over to the correct channel to record. On ALL other occasions, even though I've indicated & confirmed in the timer recording list of the channel number (#) to record, it would record correctly on the 1st programme and NOT change over to the next channel when it came time to record the 2nd one. Could this possibly have something to do with my set up? I've a Motorola DCT-2500 (Cablevision) hook up to the unit's IR receiver (yes, I've even attempted moving the iris around to make sure that was not the problem) Manually, I am able to change channels with this set-up. It's only when using timer recording that it falls apart! I've experimented with different increments between recording times of 1st & 2nd programme to NO avail. Last straw then was to call up Toshiba tech support. He seems rather attentive to my detailing of the problem but was unable to offer up any solutions. Took my tel# and promised to call by next week. Well, that was more then 2 weeks ago and I have NOT heard from Toshiba.
Onto better stuff: I happen to also own the Toshiba SD-H400 DVR/TiVo. Now this unit's advantage regarding the above problem over the RD-XS32 is that it has BOTH an IR & Serial remote option. Utilizing the 'serial' remote connector has resulted in 100% hits in all timer recordings on channel changing. I wish that Toshiba had not skimmed on this additional option or rather offered this instead for the RD-XS32.
The beauty of the RD-XS32 is the DVD Recorder and its slew of editing functions. The above problem aside. I'm having a blast recording to DVD-Rs either directly, from its own hard drive of recorded programmes & also via S-Video/L-R Audio (sorry, it'll only record 2ch audio; NO digital/optical audio in) of programmes I've recorded on the SD-H400. Quality of recording is decent especially when compared to VHS. No more messy tangling of stuck tapes. In fact I recorded the whole Olympic games on DVDs (sorry if it's 2much info here:)
Important Hint: 1st thing you should look for and do when setting up is to set the recorder mode to: MAIN
This ensures that your recorded material can be dubbed to industry DVD video standards for compatible playback on other players.
A great feature is it's recording quality adjustability. You have for example the option of SP,LP,MN,AT modes (120mins,240mins,MN=whatever your fancy mode, AT=best quality allowable base on 120mins or less media mode) with further options of MN1, MN2 for improved sound recording eg. concerts, symphonies.
You can choose thumbnails, reconfigure bit-rates and other features too extensive for me to get into.
Finally, my dabble into DVD-RW was unsuccessful. While I had no problem initializing (neccessary step for this medium) and then recording onto it. I was unable to playback the disc on either the PC or another DVD player:( I didn't bother with the DVD-RAM format even though one disc was included free as it's rather restrictive and not easily sharable.
The remote is a bit frustrating and requires getting use to. After 2 months, I'm still hunting for buttons and it's NOT backlit! Response of buttons is better then that for the SD-H400. |

Seems a very capable recorder although I only got it today. Tried taping items off Sky+ and ok without problem. Has feature to autmatically change channel on the satellite receiver if you require it for timer operations this works fine with my Panasonic satellite box.
Got a bit confused converting a HDD item to a DVD-ROM (which a single sided DVD-ROM is supplied) but got there in the end and took the advert breaks out :-)
Only problem is my computer only supports +R and +RW not the -R and -RW of this recorder I knew it would not record on the discs but it won't even play them which means I have to make -RW and -R for the upstairs recorder and +R and +RW for the Sony DVD player downstairs (oh well thats technology for you!). |

This is my first DVD Recorder and I'm very glad I bought this one ,Great price for the feature's it has. So far I used FujiFilm and Imation DVD-R's and Sony DVD-RW's to record , they all work great.
The best part is the editing function. You can edit recording at will, creating chapters and deleting any of them at will. (create chapters for the commercials, then delete them) You now have the program without the commercials. The DVD creation feature is great as well. You can rename each chapters individually, and whole shows (titles) as well. You can combine chapters and/or titles together as well. It gives you a few options on colors and display as to what it will look like, and the finished (finalized) product will then work in any DVD player and look very professional .
Another great features about this unit is that you can watch a DVD while recording a show on the HD, and also being able to see show broadcasting while watching a show on the HD or DVD by using the PIP function.
There are a lot more great features on Toshiba RD-XS32, I highly recommend it. |

I purchased this unit for it's HD and DVD recording and editing features. It has worked flawlessly and I've used it for recording TV shows and movies from the S-Video output of my HDTV cable box. I've authored several DVD-RW discs for friends when they've missed shows and these DVDs played on their players without any issues. It has handled my Ritek DVD-R discs without any problem as well. The recording quality is excellent especially from the HD channels.
Editing is quite easy once you've mastered working with the remote. It's not a replacement for an editing PC but it works well for removing commercials and creating a series DVD. Menus are canned and basic but there are a good set of selectable options. It also does bitrate conversion so if you record a show with a bitrate that's to high you can dub it to disc and convert the bitrate to make it fit.
I recommended this unit to a friend who was also looking for a DVR with a built in HD. He purchased it almost immediately. He has been quite satisfied with the unit as well. |

Why rating 5? Because the recorded media is perfect only on RD-XS32 itself. If played in other DVD player, the video looks "washed out" (too bright) due to the black level bug.
If you want to create DVD from your VHS or DV source for your family and friends, forget this unit....the black level bug will make your production look amateur.
Stay away from this unit unitl Toshiba engineers release a firmware fix for this unit. |
