What can I say...I have had so many DVD recorders through the years, and tney all have their bugs. This one however seems to be the best so far. I had 2 Samsung DVD Stand alone recorders and the only good one is the DVDR 155. The combo recorder has a major flaw with the VCR and sych problems. But the 155 has a sharper picture, but no VCR. This unit, Toshiba's DVR610 offers clear, crisp pictures and EX to dub from VCR to DVD and no Synch problems. The S-Video input is better than just offering Y composite in. This recorder also has a fan! These burners need to have fans..they get very hot in no time. The best discs to record on are Verbatim 8X. Other brand name blank discs 8X are good, but if you can use Verbatim, you have higher odds of success. Toshiba brags that this unit loves any type of disc that you throw at it, but in reality , use -R or +R and good luck with the RW's at times. Stay far away from cheap blank media with any recorder or you will start getting disc errors. Maxell is also a reliable brand. Memorex is not! If you are wanting a solid, well designed combo recording system, Toshiba is the way to go. If you want a good DVD recorder without VHS, then Samsung DVDR 155 is the way to go.
