I have had the SR90VE for years and have had good service. When the media went from 4X to 8X I contacted the 1-800 number and got a call back. The person asked for details about my VCR/DVD recorder and sent me a DVD upgrade disc for free. It upgraded my machine to 8X and I have been using it every since for transfering home video from VCR to DVD's. I have contacted them again to see if there is an upgrade to 16X. Have not heard back as of yet. I am in the process of getting 8X blank dvd's to use. I can only download my video camera to this unit on VHS tapes to transfer to DVD which is why I haven't upgraded to another unit.

The Symphonic SR90VE can only record DVD-R discs up to 4x or DVD-RW discs up to 2x.

TheSR90VE CANNOT record DVD-R discs above 4x; DVD-RW discs above 2x; DVD+R discs; DVD+RW discs; CD's; or any discs which are copyright-protected.

Most DVD-R discs on the market today are 16x, and most DVD-RW discs are 8x - neither of which will work in the SR90VE. You have two options for this problem:

Option #1 - Contact Funai Corporation at 1-800-242-7158 for a "Firmware Upgrade CD". This will make the unit compatible with DVD-R discs up to 8x and DVD-RW discs up to 4x. Once you are on the phone with Funai, they will ask you to hit some buttons on the remote to access the firmware version currently installed on the machine so that they can send you the proper upgrade CD. The CD will set you back about $23.00 (includes cost of CD plus shipping). You will still need to locate and purchase DVD-R 8x discs or DVD-RW 4x discs. Try looking at Amazon.com, Disc4Less.com or eBay.com.

Option #2 - Skip upgrading the firmware and try to find a retailer who still has some old DVD-R 4x discs or DVD-RW 2x discs in stock. (Do a Google search for "DVD-R 4x Discs" or "DVD-RW 2x Discs"). Again, your best options will probably be at Amazon.com, Disc4Less.com or perhaps ebay.com.

Either way, do NOT purchase Dual-Layer discs or Blu-Ray discs as neither of these are compatible with this recorder - they must be standard single-layer 4.7gb discs.

All-in-all, this is a high-quality VCR/DVD Recorder, but the technology of the recording media has advanced beyond the capabilities of the machine. Although the older DVD media is still available, you might just consider upgrading to a newer DVD/VCR which utilizes the newer DVD technologies.

I certainly hope this helps - and good luck

I am frustrated with Symphonic SR90VE. I purchased it 2 years ago. It stopped working after 2X DVDs were replaced by 8X. I applied the microcode fix for 8X, but now, the slowest media I can find is 16X. This makes the unit I purchased unusable. The manufacture told me nothing could be done.

DO NOT BUY THE SR90VE

Here's the media lowdown, direct from the manufacturer Funai:

Model:sr90ve

Below is a list of discs that should or should not be used with the DVD recorders.

DVD-R

4x can be used

8x will result in a disc error.

DVD-RW

2x can be used

4x will result in a disc error.

The following discs have been tested and are proven to be compatible with our DVD recorders.

MEMOREX DVD-R

FUJIFILM DVD-R

FUJIFILM DVD-RW

IMATION DVD-RW

IMATION DVD-R 2.0

TDK DVD-RW 2X

TDK DVD-R 2X

The following are brands of discs we DO NOT recommend:

MEMOREX DVD-RW

SONY DVD-RW

SONY DVD-R

TDK DVD-RW 4x

TDK DVD-R 4x

Please be aware that a free software upgrade is now available to customers. This upgrade will enable your unit to recognize the (DVD-R 8x) discs. To obtain a copy, please call 1-800-242-7158. Customer service by phone is available 7 days a week 6:00am to 9:00pm pacific time.

In order to receive the upgrade we need to know what firmware version your unit requires. First you need to access the DVD recorders service mode. Turn on the DVD Recorder and the Television, make sure the unit is on the DVD side. You may access the service mode by pressing the CMSKIP button on the remote control. Once you press CMSKIP you must press the numbers 1,2,3. You must do this quickly so it may take a couple tries. The model name will appear on the screen followed by Firmware Version. I need to know the serial number next to FE:
Press the RETURN button to exit screen.

Fair editing SW for DVD-RW. No audio during editing. Finalized DVD works well. Menus to control are only on RF output not on other video outs (must use modulated output to TV). Other video outs are great. Does output coaxial and digital audio. Currently on discount at Wallmart for 90 bucks and could not pass it up. Some of our VHS tapes were unused now are good again. No hack found for macro or region and needs 8 speed firmware upgrade.

For those looking for the 8X record: Call the Symphonic 800 number. They will send you an upgrade, I did and it works fine for 8X. They said 8x was the limit and I have not tried anything faster. My 8X DVD-R are working great.

Echo the comment about 8X Memorex DVD-r, they won't work. I tried this unit because of my excellent results with a Symphonic HiFi VCR about 20 yrs ago. This unit is not working as advertised. It rejects some of the Maxell media. During VCR-DVD dub the counter will stop working and it just stops recording for no apparent reason. I am taking it back to Walmart but don't know if I should try the Emerson, the only other dash-R recorder at Walmart. Maybe I've just got a defective unit. Date of manufacture is Aug 2004. I've read the negatives on Emerson, but my first adventure into DVD recorders with Symphonic has not been pleasant.

From Walmart 11/10/04. Not all WM have them. No problems playing other finalized DVD-R or DVD+R. Quality at 4hr xlnt, 6hr like VHS. 8 and 10hr slightly worse, but watchable. Clumsy and 'Cheap' remote, but it works. Manual doesn't describe all functions. VCR-DVD recording available only on 'DUB' (not timer or OTR) makes hard editing unless attended and manually stop-pause-play. VCR-DVD quality pretty good, esp at SP. Note: Will NOT copy Commercial DVDs to DVD, BUT, it will copy to VCR??? Will NOT record on 8x or higher DVDs, tried memorex 8x (no go) then maxell 2-4x which worked fine.
