SV2000/WV10D6 DVD recorder bought Sept/26/2007 for $49.97 from WalMart - this looks like the new regular price.

Only 2 weeks' experience - very limited in some areas - but have done quite extensive research on notorious "E4 54037380" - Recording Error - Can not record on this disc.

Records and plays back well on DVD+RW 4x - brands tried Maxell and Office Depot - both are Ritek004 (*see E4 error later).

Plays back all DVD+R tried written on my PC.

1) pdf Manual is available on-line
http://www.funai-corp.com/6pdf/om/WV10D6.pdf

2) Analog Tuner - WV10D6 only has analog tuner -
mitigation - although there is ruling that broadcasts are going digital by Feb/17/2009 - visiting converter box coupon offer -
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/index.html
- there it says -
"Your TV tuner is: Analog
You get your programming from: Cable or satellite
You will need by Feb. 17, 2009: Provider will address"
So an analog tuner might not be quite as "obsolete" after Feb/17/2009 -
cable or satellite will either still supply (converted) analog signals or some conversion.

3) DVD+VR recording format - tape model recording - but does not require finalizing for other players - see Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD%2BVR .

4) E4 54037380 - I had a number of E4 errors "Recording Error - can not record on this disc" - I did the obvious things like tried different discs etc -

Did a lot of on-line research - this error code seems to be common to quite a few DVD recorders (or VCR combo) like Emerson, Sylvannia, Magnavox - not surprising since they are made by Funai - (even one instance of JVC!) - advice was very variable - mostly clean the laser pick up lens -

I phoned Funai support - and was told there was probably something wrong with the pick-up unit and to exchange the recorder as this might give problems later on.

Exchanged, but the new recorder still gave the same E4 error -
in the end I found what was probably the problem here on VideoHelp - but under the Magnavox WMR10D6 DVD recorder - http://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorders/magnavox-mwr10d6/1731 -
terryj from United States reported April 01, 2007:
"Apparent re-use on DVD-RW with these units is 4 times max. Fifth time gives you spotty recording effort. So don't re-use your DVD-RW/+RWs
more than four times, without replacing them with
fresh media, or you'll find your timers may not
go off as planned."

For me this 4 times re-use limitation appears to be the Edit type reuse - ie: overwriting and/or deleting a title and trying to record onto the same vacated space.

It seems erasing the entire DVD+RW gives the disc a clean start.

I am now very happy with this inexpensive purchase once I understood the 4 time reuse limitation - my recordings have been fine - even the 4 hour EP recordings look pretty good on my cheap analog 27" CRT TV. Only the 6 hour SLP recordings show motion artifacts - but more than acceptable for program shifting.

Comments:
This recorder works pretty well but there are a number of bugs in the user interface design.

The escape key is labeled "return" with a logo the same as the return/enter key on a computer keyboard. Confusing.

When editing the recorder writes to disk, which is a very slow process, too often. You have to wait a minute or so each time it writes. Typically, you are forced to wait after:
- editing each title
- editing the disk title
- finalizing the disk
It should delay the write until you have done all the edits. Also, editing the disk title and finalizing the disk are not availible from the title edit menu, you have to hit stop, wait for the write, then go to the setup menu and select disk edit (from which you can't edit the titles). Hitting the escape key while in the title edit menu writes the data out to disk whether you want it to or not.

It creates a title menu but no chapter menu. The disk title is not displayed on the title menu unless you hit the page up button to get to the disk info; it should be displayed on each screen of the title menu.

You cannot hide the date/time of recording on the title menu which may be appropriate for tv shows but is not appropriate for DVD transfers.

You are permitted to set an index picture for each title, add and delete chapter marks, set a title for each title, and make chapters hidden. It appears
that each time you edit a write once disk it is probably creating a new session or is just appending
some info to the end of the recording. You are not allowed to split a title on write-once media even though there is no good technical reason for this; given the other things it can do you should also be able to do this. Although you can hide chapters, usually to delete crude at the end of a recording, there is no quick way to just delete to the end of the title. And when you have deleted the crud at the end of the title, this fact is not reflected in the title duration shown on the title menu or in the on screen display during playback; this would have been trivial to do and is one of the primary reasons to delete the crud in the first place.

The recording time is settable in 30 minute intervals using the one touch record mode. This is unfortunate. You want to set the recording time to 5-15 minutes longer than the "approximate running time" of the tape you are transferring to allow for errors, trailers, and additional material. And tapes often come in 30, 60, 90, and 120 minute lengths. One work around, that is still wasteful of your time, is to wait several minutes into the recording and hit the record button again to round up to the nearest 30 minutes. If you wait 5 minutes, you can get 35, 65, 95, or 125 minutes recording time, for example.

Playback works pretty well in that the limited number of keys on the remote are mapped to a larger set of functions allowing slow forward/reverse (several speeds), fast forward/reverse, single frame advance or reverse, etc. These modes come in handy when selecting index pictures or setting chapter marks
in edit mode. Still, it is no match for a jog wheel or shuffle wheel.

Another person was confused by the bonus recording time they got. The reason for this is simple: some video compresses better than others. If you have your VCR set to give a blue screen at the end of a recording you will find you may have nearly a bonus hour of recording. Unfortunately, this leads to misleading on screen display of title remaining time.

Typing in title info on the numeric keypad is tedious. A USB or PS/2 keyboard input would be useful.

The user interface does not let you preset the disk name, title names, etc while recording to save time.
Also, the chapter title editing doesn't have a quick way to insert common phrases such as "trailers", "movie", "main feature", "episode", etc.
The net effect of the cumbersome user interface is to add 20 minutes of wasted user time for each recording for fairly simple edits: set disk name, set title name,
set an index picture, delete the crud at the end of the chapter, set a chapter mark at the beginning of the actual movie, and set a chapter mark before the credits roll. When you are transfering a bunch of VHS tapes, this adds up.

Confirming a minor edit function requires two additional keystrokes. Oddly, adding or deleting a chapter mark ( a pretty harmless operation) must be confirmed but hiding (deleting) a chapter does not need to be. Because of this idiosyncrasy, it is better to hide all the chapters at the end of a recording than to merge them into one hidden chapter.

There is no abort key during recording. You can hit stop but then you have to wait a minute for the data to be flushed to disk and then you have to edit the disk to delete the title.

During playback, the lack of one key access to things like subtitles is very annoying and the lack of a decent on screen display is also annoying. You have an on screen menu that does show time in title but if you want to see time remaining you have to select the jump to chapter/time menu item and it is very easy to accidently jump. The enter key should have been placed in the middle of the cursor cluster or at least
been better integrated with it.

According to the manual, playback is supported for:
DVD video, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-DA, Video CD, CD-RW, CD-R and includes MP3 files on
CD media but maybe not on DVD media. Does not appear
to support JPEG images or MPEG4 video (at least they
don't seem to be mentioned in manual).
Writing is supported to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW.
DVD-R(W) disks are recorded in DVD+VR mode. It canot write to CD-R or CD-RW disks. Some editing functions are not available for write-once media.
Recording times (compression levels): 1hr, 2Hr, 2.5Hr, 3Hr, 4Hr, 6Hr.

When recording two shows back to back, you lose 30 seconds of the second show while it flushes the first one to disk.

Editing functions:
- Deleting Titles +RW, +R, -RW, -R
- Putting names on titles +RW, +R, -RW, -R
- Setting chapter marks +RW, +R, -RW, -R
- Deleting chapter marks +RW +R -RW -R
- Hiding chapters +RW +R -RW -R
- Setting pictures for thumbnails +RW +R -RW -R
- Dividing a title +RW -RW only
- Putting name on disk +RW +R -RW -R
- setting or releasing disk protect +RW +R -RW -R
- Erasing disk +RW -RW -RWvideo
On write once media, space used is not freed.
- Making edits compatible (+RW) or finalizing (+R -RW -R)
Many of the editing functions appear to use multisession or something similar on write once
media allowing the menus to be replaced.

Recommended media (from manual):
TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x
SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x
MAXELL DVD+R 4/x/8x/16x
SONY DVD+RW 4x
MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x
MAXELL DVD-RW 4x
Compatible Media (from manual):
Verbatim DVD+R 8x
Verbatim DVD+RW 4x
Verbatim DVD-R 8x
Verbatim DVD-RW 2x
Maxell DVD-R 16x
JVC DVD-RW 4x
I have been using:
Office Depot DVD+R 8x
Maxell DVD-R 16x

Manual is not available on web site. A manual for
the FDR90E is available at http://www.funai.us/pdf/om/FDR90E.pdf. That is similar but changes remote control, adds LED display,
adds a 10 hour recording mode but doesn't support +R(W) media. That will give a very rough feel of the user interface.

I also posted this review on AVS Forums and figured I'd also place it here. I paid $66 after tax and s&h thru Walmart.com I played around with it using Memorex 4X +RW, media code: Philips041 It recorded and edited flawlessly. I must say I am impressed with the quality of the recordings, especially for the price. Looks better than VHS, that's for sure. I was pleasantly surprised to notice how quiet the unit is when recording. It makes a very faint clicking sound. I tried it out using SP (2hr) & SPP (2.5hr) modes in Basic (records till disc runs out of space), One-Touch (records in blocks of 30min increments per each time you press the Record button or till the disc runs out of space) and Timer recordings. I found it very easy to use. This is my first basic Standalone DVD Recorder. I have a HDD Sony, but wanted an inexpensive unit to replace my VCR and record other tv shows. The one thing I'm a little bit disappointed with is, that if you record shows back-to-back (ending time = starting time), the next show in the timer will lose about 30-45 seconds of the beginning as it appears the machine writes the title prior to recording the next show. It does not seem to matter if they are on the same channel or not. I noticed it is more like 45 seconds you will lose. One way around this if recording shows on the same channel back-to-back, is to set them as one recording and then split them. Another strange anomaly to me was that I got a total recording time of 2:48:03 in SPP (2.5hr mode)? Strange, but I'll take the extra 18 minutes!! For the money, I give this unit a 9.5 If it had LED's, it would be a 10 For those interested; the manufacture date of mine says it is from July 2006. One thing I forgot to mention. Closed Captions did copy, but one of my players, a cheap Memorex that plays anything you throw at it, would not display them. When played thru my other two players, they were there. Probably a problem with the Memorex player, not the recorder.
*Also works with Memorex 1X DVD-RW, media code: RITEK000V11A It however, does not allow you to pause during recording with this media. I'm not sure if it's with all -RW's or just this media.
*Plays back, but does not record onto Office Depot 4X DVD-RW, media code: RITEKW04

As a cheap replacement for my VCR, it works great. A bit clumsy in the controls, but I can live with that. Only time will tell as to its longevity.
