I am pleased with the recorder. On DV input though I found it would cut off in the middle of the recording. I tracked this down to a heat issue. This unit has a internal fan, but the cabinet I placed it in does not have a lot of airflow. If I record a lot I put a small fan blowing toward the vent holes on the dvd side of the unit. I have only run into this problem on the DV input recording.
Video quality on HQ (1hr), HSP (1.5hrs), SP (2hrs) is awesome. You go below that on VHS to DVD and start to loose a lot of quality!
Video quality on LP (4hr mode) using a Dish Network receiver is great. Very clear. Very impressed.
I bought the unit from circuit city.
I have used multiple media with the recorder as with most media, you must use the best media to get the best results. I have recorded using Sony DVD-RW, Maxell DVD+RW discs without complaint or issue.
I have used authentic Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R(YUDEN000T02), Ritek 4x DVD-R (RITEKG04), Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R (TYG01) without one coaster or complaint. These even playback on my pickiest Toshiba DVD player!
I would steer clear of the generic branded and cheap discs. These are not good no matter what player burn them on! Don't waste your money, do your research! Pay the extra few pennies... Especially when you are storing your precious memories.
Things I don't like about the unit, the heat factor, figured it should handle more toleranced then that (but it is overcomeable). The recorder puts in a generic title, chapter screen that puts automatically injects the current date/time in the chapter's title upon playback. When dubbing video to DVD this date/time of recording below the "title" is misleading and there should be an option to have it in there on not. Typing in the title is a pain in the butt with the remote. They could have put the letters on the screen in a standard QWERTY fashion.
For me it has its quirks but it is an excellent unit. I have recorded well over 100 DVD's and DVDRW programs on it without much issues. Stick with high quality media and you will be very happy. You don't have to buy sony's media, just good quality Ritek or Taiyo Yuden, Fujifilm, Samsung... NEVER BUY GENERICS!!!
:)

| RTS, I just bought the Sony RDR-VX515, similar to your 500 I'm sure in many respects, and find the same regarding Memorex DVD-R. Have not tried DVD+R yet but will now after reading your comment that you were successful with DVD+R. Gary |

| I have used Memorex DVD+R and recorded fine. However, When I use the indentical spec DVD-R, the machine appears to record. Then, when I hit stop, the INF message only displays for a quick second and nothing is on the Disk. I contacted Sony and was told to purchase a SONY Brand DVD-R media and try that. Has Anyone else had this problem with Memorex in a Sony Machine?? |

VCR would not track tapes that other players would; machine shuts down if tape will not FF/REW, altho other players can handle these tapes.
Default stereo audio setting means sound can drops out on a poor tape [altho other machines can read] and must be manually reset to mono, but reset feature disabled in VCR to DVD dub mode so that DVD is dubbed without sound, or with faulty sound.
Machine must be coddled at all times.
Sent it back! |

| Having problems with BenQ DVD+R media, of course I purchased a spindle of 100! Sony spits them out after a while when recording, cannot read nor write to this media error. Contacted Sony, they said that the item was tested with Sony media and as such Sony Media is recommended. 2 Months and I'm still waiting for my 20 free Sony DVD's. Works fine with Imation DVD+RW |

| Over the last month, the unit has not made a complete DV copy without failing to finalize or stopping while recording. Have tried Sony and Maxell media. Both had the same results. Importing via s-video seems to work ok. Only a few coasters from that process. |

I am having nothing but problems with this as well. I am trying to transfer from my Sony DV camcorder to dvd using the vx500. It starts ok but then after about 10 seconds, it cuts off. A high pitched whine can be heard while recording and I can't figure out where this is coming from. I tried changing audio settings and starting from ascratch numerous times but no good.
I was using an iLink cable and then switched over to the AV cable that came with the camcorder. Same symptom although the recording lasted a little longer. Using brand new Memorex 4x blank dvds that the vx500 is formatting.
If I start recording again, it will do so for about another 10-15 seconds and then stop. The data is being copied to the dvd because I can play it back, but it keeps stopping and requires manual start again.
Very discouraged. I am calling Sony tomorrow but based on what I see in other threads on the net, I don't hold out much hope.

If you hook this unit up correctly, it works like a charm. The box says it won't copy commercial video from VHS to DVD. Can use output to edit video on my computer. (Ex: Remove commericals from TV).
Nice system. |

I wish it did divx, but I have added a divx certified player and a d-link media sever,,,so I am very close to a very good pvr system, for both my home office and tv room.where the big sound system is, not that my thx 5.1 logitech does not compete. My 800 watt rca suround system kicks butt, 20 inch main's with the oth 5 speakers...does the job.
Everything including my dvd recorder is being hooked up to a sytax olivia 30" lcd tv/comp ready as we speak. |
