I bought this machine new in 2003. Worked very well using +RW, -RW discs. After about 6 years, it started to falter, giving "disc is dirty" messages frequently.
Took it apart, manually cleaned the laser & the small ribbon cables attached to the laser assembly, it came back to life for about a month, then failed again.
Wouldn't finalize a recording, especially when writing title information.
Then I tried lens-cleaning discs, that helped a bit, but 2 yrs ago it finally
went kaput. Would not read any type of disc except commercial DVD movies, and certain DVD-R discs. No read or write to DVD+RW or DVD-RW.
After reading here about the firmware update, I downloaded and installed it,
didn't help at all. The DVD drive needs replacing, possibly a standard computer
DVDRW drive might work, problem is the Sony DVD drive drawer is extremely narrow, meaning I'd have to make a bigger hole in the front bezel to accomodate it.
Not worth sending to Sony for repair, since this unit only has an analog tuner.
When it did work, the PQ was excellent, 12bit as opposed to standard 10bit.

| I am currently on hold with Sony. I have read approx 30 complaints with the same exact problem as ours and the trouble shooting dept refuses to acknowledge this problem. Our recorder seems to have stopped recognizing dvd-rw, dvd+rw and even will not recognize or play a disney movie or music cd. I am being told that there are no authorized service centers in my area (NYC) and I will need to ship my player (at my expense) to Loredo, TX. I will also need to call back at my inconvenience to speak to customer relations, 9am-5pm monday - friday(1-800-222-7669), which happens to be when I am expected to be focused on MY job. I happen to own several SONY products and am for the most part happy with them. |

Using the RDR-GX7 for 3 years now. Great machine until recently. I use the GX7 to record tv shows. I play the recordings on other players. (Sony,Toshiba, etc). I've had problems with newer blank +/-RW discs. It will no longer recognize the +/-RW Blanks, or play movies of the same format that the machine itself recorded earlier. It will record to -R, but will not play -R, even after being finalized. All of these dvd's will play in my other machines. Hoping that a firmware update, like the one offered by bithead9 on this forum might help. Pls send to rkleinsak@netscape.com, or rkleinsak@yahoo.com with instructions.

This unit started out great but has become useless and Sony appears to have abandoned any support. It will no longer format any DVD+RW disks and will not write to most of my previously formated disks.

spreading the firmware update for
this recorder, service bulletins, and a service manual
to people within this thread.
I personally don't own this recorder, so
I don't care, but I just thought the rest of

Please send RDR-GX7 firmware update to tvanvliet@carolina.rr.com. It freezes on every attempt to play DVD "Cars" Widescreen
by cycling between 1:02:17 thru 1:02:20 and back again. This is the first time I've ever experienced this. The DVD plays fine on every other DVD player that I have. |

| I'm very down on this unit because it won't play discs that have been authored on my computer, regardless of which type of medium I use (-R, +R, etc). Apparently the unit requires a startup menu on the disc. None of my home movies, or DVD backups, that don't have a main menu will play at all. |

Can anybody get their Sony GX7 to be able to recognize a blank 16x DVD-R disc? If I put in a TDK "1x-16x" blank DVD-R disk, it does not recognize the blank, so I cannot record on this unit anymore!! Sony says that it will only work with 8x or slower media- no updates - "too bad". Bad answer, Sony! So, the so-called "1x-16x" blank DVD-R discs must not qualify. What can I do to be able to record DVD-R blanks again? Buy-up a bunch of 8x DVD-R from the back shelves in stores?
