Concerning my comments below, I did not mean Home Depot disks, but, Office Depot brand media. That would be a fine choice if price per disk/multi-package is an issue.
However, I would be leary of most off brand, low price media.

I use a Sony GX-315, Sony NC-675P 5 disk player and a low-mid level Centrios DVD recorder. I have recorded from both satelite and cable. And I have recorded to both recorders.
The only problem that I experienced happened when trying to record from some pay movie channels on DirecTV and playing back on the Sony 5 disk player. There is a picture but no audio. However, it will playback on the Centrios DVR. And anything that I've recorded on the Centrios will playback on the GX-315. Including those same pay movie channels. Strange. And so far I have not had that same problem when recording from cable (local Comcast). But I don't have the pay movie channels now either.
I have recorded from my Sony Hi8 camcorder via the a/v imputs to the GX-315 and got an excellent recording.
I have found that using only high quality recording disks; TDK, Maxel, Sony, even Home Depot brand (for a good cheaper alternative) are the only way to go. It does make a difference, not only in quality of recording, but, in the life of the disk. A few cents extra will make a difference.

After using my Mac for DVD authoring, I decided to spring for a stand-alone recorder (speed and ease of use) for weekly updates from my miniDV (digital) video camera.

I love all the Sony products I've bought and used so far (tv, vcr, tape deck, tuner, video cameras, etc), so looked first at Sony for a DVD recorder.

Researched and found the GX315 and bought it especially for its firewire input capability.

What I found surprised me. The firewire input is glichy as best. It skips frames and stumbles for about the first 2 minutes of a transfer from my camera (TRV22...but also from my trusty TRV10 as well). (using Fuji -R DVDs)

This same camera has no problem transfering to the GX315 via analogue...or even via S-Link. So, why does the firewire have such a hiccup? (using same DVD -R as above)

And yes, I have bought a brand new firewire to rule out -that- being the problem. No dice. No fix.

I've called and talked to the Product Specialists at Sony and they can't figure out why there is a problem. They want me to send it in to them for a look-see.

Overall I'm happy with the performance of this unit, I'm just very disappointed in the stability of the iLink...the main reason I bought the GX315 for.

Hope that Sony has a fix for it. It has Toshiba Samsung innards. Wonder if this has any bearing on the problem?

Hi there.. I am sort of pleased with this recorder except the fact that it is quite picky about which media it wants to play. For instance, I haven't been able to play Ridata and SmartBuy media on this. It is quite annoying as a big chunk of my DVD Collection is on some no-name discs. If I can't play them, what's the point.

All of them, however, work perfectly on my older Sony 5 Disc DVD Changer.

I'm gonna try my best to return this and just buy a HD (upconverting) player. I don't really use the DVD recorder much since I have two DVRs.

I've noticed that a few of you have made mention of not being able to record copy protected material from sources such as HBO. Firstly, the form of protection they use in NOT Macrovision, it is called CGMS-A. It acts significantly different than Macrovision. Secondly, here in Canada, my digital cable movie channels are from Movie Central (owned by Corus Entertainment). I spoke directly to a senior tech there not 15 minutes ago. He told me...now this is important so pay attention..."CGMS-A is fed through field 21...the same field as sub title data. The purpose is not to NOT allow you to record, but to allow you yo record ONCE. Meaning that the DVD you just recorded on will now be encoded with CGMS-A and prevent you from making copies to distribute to others who do not pay for the movie services you do." Hmmmm....interesting I thought. However, there is SEVERE inconsistancy in their "flagging" system for this CGMS-A scheme. I've received the message on my unit saying that it cannot record copy protected material...yet it recorded it anyway. I've also had the recorder stop all together when trying to record copy protected material. And then the strangest of all....trying to record a movie at a specific time & not being able to. Then, try recording the same movie in a different time slot and have it work!!!
I thought if I put my handy Electrohome Video Stabilizer in between my cable box and my DVD recorder it would prevent the copy protection from ever reaching the DVD recorder....NO DICE!!! This little unit has NEVER failed me whether it was copying DVD to VHS or VHS to VHS.
WE NEED A HACK PEOPLE!!!

So far, it's been pretty good. I noticed two problems, though:

1. +RW discs (after finalizing) will not play in my other DVD player, only in the Sony player

2. The unit is not very transparent, it adds a lite green tint to the recorded images.

from shop4tech 2.4X Ridata DVD+R 8.5G Dual Layer Shiny Top
Bulk by Ritek

Works poorly. Even my other sony set top player will not play the DVD+R DL. A cheap china made DVD plays the first half but then stops and starts. So I'm going to try a different DVD+R DL disk manufacture. Darn got 50 of the Riteks. The disks will play in the GX315 but, too many poor compression artifacts and skippy play back.

The single layer works as expected but that's not why I bought this recorder.

Would like if anyone could recommend a usable DVD+R DL brand.

no rear s-video input to record from - you'll have to resort to composite input or built in tuner! What were you thinking, Sony???
The only s-video input is on the front panel, and I'm sure that not many others will want to keep a web of cables sticking out from the front panel.

Major let-down, considering all the other nice features. DVD picture quality is amazing, as are the menus & loading speed. Remote is a bit clunky. Still playing with recording on this unit, but real initial letdown is lack of s-video input on the back.

This is in discussion to my previous post. This recorder seems rock solid! I had a lite-on unit that went bad and was returned. Sony is the way to fly. As far as recording HBO or other channels, I am sure that if you search the net that a solution will present itself. I highly recommend this recorder.

Hello all. First post, been reading a while. I have been looking at the RDR-GX300 for quite some time and was ready to purchase until I saw the GX315! This is an excellent machine. I was very excited to get it home and put it to work. The reason I am writing this review is to make sure everyone knows that HBO sends copyright signal out and the unit picks this up as if you were trying to copy a DVD. As nice as the unit is, this makes it pretty much useless for me. Tech support stated that I would not be able to copy anything from HBO or other paid service that sends out a copyright signal as Sony units are heavily invested in picking up the signal and stopping the recording.

I am not interested in copying DVDs, I only want to copy things from HBO. Anyone know a good recorder that will allow such things?
