This is my first dvd player so don't have comparison for rating.
It has always given occasional trouble with commercial dvd play.since day 1.
Also has given marginal performance in dvd recording, at times simply locking-up and erasing even previously recorded and protected titles on the disc.
Just discovered the "downloads of firmware upgrade" on the Samsung website. To my delight, it appeared that the problems were known by Samsung & corrected & all i had to do was download, burn and load the new program! NOT. I downloaded the zip, extracted the 2 files, burned onto a cd-r [all according the instructions on the Samsung website], put the disc into my player, recieved the go-ahead to install the upgrade, waited about 5min, and it told me the "install failed, call cust. service". Now my machine will not open the dvd door, no menu, no dvd play... the only thing it does is play vhs but without picture. Cust serv had less technical savvy than I have! got shuttled to a "senior tech" who tried to blame me. first saying i hadn't burned the cd correctly, then when it was clear that it had been burned correctly, told me I shouldn't have upgraded without a recommendation from Samsung [my owners manual recommended it] then he was just plain RUDE to me. this download, recommended from their site, has crashed my machine, and they won't help me because it's "out of warranty". This is not a warranty issue! It played, recorded, mostly functioned except the occasional glitch and now NOTHING. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER SAMSUNG PRODUCT OF ANY KIND |

| I can play my recorded DVD's fine on other players until I try to pause or tab forward, etc. As soon as I try to do anything but just play, it hangs up in all my other players and I have to start over from the beginning. Although works fine on my computer DVD players, just not my home destop player varieties. It's fine if you just want to sit down and view from start to finish, but don't dare try to pause or find a certain scene. |

I followed the european samsung website directions and did the firmware.
Ok, I have the us version.. well after upgrading all my movies are flicking and black and white. Tried later in the us samsung site and did the firmware I found there, well, i was expecting to get back at least the color..
nothing happens, now is sepia! and flicking
Call samsung, no help, maybe I just need the original firmware, any idea or help, really really appreciate it

| I bought this machine in Dec.2005 and have only just started using it. I find that even when finalized the DVDs will only play in one other machine which is a Pioneer. Have used DVD-RW, and DVD-R in it. Thinking of throwing the stupid thing out the window! |

| Will not record on DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL but plays several discs of downloaded video burnt on my PC on these formats without difficulty. Also happily plays DTS Audio CDs (via my surround amplifier connected with the optical digital link)and the one Dualdisc I have. Seems to have the odd compatibility problem with commercial DVDs; the recent Who Quadrophenia Live release plays with the commentary enabled and no amount of tinkering gets rid of it, whereas it plays happily on my Sony DAVS880 and Sony PS2. The multiregion hack (Menu, 57538, enter region number) works very nicely on all of my 30+ region 1 DVDs. |

Can anyone tell me if they have managed to successfully make copies of the DVD made with this recorder?
I have made several DVDs from old VHS home movies and so far I have not been able to make copies of any of them using my desktop PC. I have tried Nero, Alcohol 120%, Clone DVD and OneClickDVDCopy, all give errors when trying to copy the DVD image to the PC. I have tried using DVD-R & DVD-RW... the DVD-RW did allow me to copy it, but would not play in any of my standalone DVD players, but did playin the DVD writer in my PC.
I seems crazy to me that this can't be done, so if anyone can help me, I'd be very grateful.

Works great. My old VHS deck finally gave up and I upgraded to this combo unit. Just made a DVD from a VHS tape. It plays in both my Sony NC-665P and a Mintek DVD-1600. I saw a previos post about DVDs not playing elsewhere. You do HAVE to go into the menu and finalize the disk. After that step mine plays in all my DVD players and my computer.
I have also recorded from my TIVO to the DVD directly using S-Video connector. Worked great.
With only 2 days of use this seems like a good unit. The progressive scan looks great on my HDTV.

This is an update to my previous review where I gave the unit an 8 rating.
Over the weekend I tried playing a new DVD, "Robots".
At about chapter 25 it began showing severe pixalation and other image rendering problems. I removed the DVD, cleaned it, tried again to no avail. I played the DVD on other machines without any problems.
I then exchanged the DVD (at COSTCO) and tried the new one with the same problem!! I did not see this problem with other titles so this is a perplexing problem. Maybe a bad MPEG chipset.
At any rate the machine is going back to the store tomorrow. I'l' probably pick up a Panasonic, a brand I have always been happy with. |

I purchased this unit even after reading the previous 2 reviews which were very negative. I assumed that those reviews were not common experiences and I was correct.
For the price (USD$215.00 at B&H Photo) it is hard to beat.
It will copy a VHS to a DVD with very little fuss.
The DVD will not play on another machine unless you FINALIZE the DVD (it is in the instructions). I created a few DVDs and had no problem playing it on other DVD players and PCs.
I would not recommend using the editing features to splice the original VHS info. If you need to edit he original you should use a PC. You can copy the tape to DVD and then start a PC editing project with that DVD.
You can also record TV shows directly to DVD.
Playback is very good, on VCR and DVD.
The menus are clear and easy to use.
The remote is adequate but could not recognize my 1 year old SHARP TV. Also, my universal remote (low-end model) could not recognize this player.
All in all, excellent feature for the price. And once I get my tapes on DVD, this will hopefully be the last VCR I will ever buy. |

Beware, you CANNOT play the dvds recorded on the Samsung VR320 on any other make of DVD player, this makes it a total waste of time, when there are other cheaper makes that can be played on and recorded on.
I made this mistake myself and now rue buying it.
Samsung and the retailers won't tell you this though. |

| Although this unit is DVD-RAM I can not get it to timeshift which is one of the main reasons I purchased it! Even though the advert said 'pause live TV', time shift is not mentioned at all in the manual and no buttons to do time shift features appear on the remote control. Has anyone got this to timeshift? |
