Comments:
no factory reset if it loses its disk format. If it is out of waranty and it goes faulty through the unit away as service centres will charge £150 ($300)to replace the hard disk.

I bought this one at Mediamarkt for 229€. Rated good by many tests. This is best recorder for this price compared against limitations. DVD-RAM recording is very rare option to find in many recorders in this price range. Pros : 1. It can write on DVD-RAM - even 240 Min (Manual claims, I have not tried.) - Can be useful to keep backup of cassettes from my handycam. 2. It plays all types of DVDs - +R and +RW even if Manual doesnot mention it specifically. 3. It can play MP3 and JPEGs on CDs or DVDs. 4. It plays DIVX format. 5. It has Pause Live TV in a different sense - Chase play option 6. 80 GB Hard disk 7. Standard features like Timer recording, editing recorded material - Splitting title, deleting a part of recording etc. 8. You can record on HDD and play a DVD at same time. (Also valid for Timer recording, after timer recording has started.). 9. You can record on DVD and play a title form HDD. 10. You can record on HDD and play other title on HDD. 11. Can copy MP3, JPEGs or recorded titles from DVD to HDD. Limitations : 1. At the start of timer recording, the DVD recorder must be in Standby Mode (Alternative : Can have another DVD Player which can be used mainly as player, you can buy one for 40€) 2. Cannot copy DVD-Video to HDD. (You need this only to copy DVDs to another DVD but you can do the same via PC, much easy) 3. Cannot copy MP3 or JPEG from HDD to DVD. (You need this only to copy DVDs to another DVD but you can do the same via PC, much easy) 4. Cannot join to recorded titles. (Create a playlist to decide the sequence of titles to be played.) Note : The limitations are common across most of DVD recorders, only Panasonic ones donot have these disadvantages but the lowest one costs - 400€ + (Atleast 170€ more). Comment : At 229€ - a good deal.

+ : RGB in! (SCART AV2) great for DBTV STB, plays both DVD +/- R & RW, DivX on all formats, component out, progressive out, multi-region hack, V. high quality on SP HD recordings, intuative controls, RGB in > RGB out loopthru works in standby mode, easy videoplus, easy HD edit, easy clockset, basic TV controls on DVD remote. - : Confusing instruction manual, doesn't always tell the truth!, can't output both RGB and component at the same time, progressive only switchable from player (not remote!!), slow loading (CD/DVD), fan noise noticeable in quite room, Conclusion: amazing value for the price ($390 in Sweden), solid player with nearly all the connections you could ask for and plays anything you throw at it (despite Samsungs reservations)! Only tried TDK, Verbatim, Fuji, Memorex media

good features: ================================== - very good audio and video quality playback and recording - very easy video recording programming - very easy menù system and good remote control response in control - simple video editing for cutting larger video (but no video join) - nice front AV3 input and DV input for camera recorders - can play previous hard disc recording while a recording in progress: you can even play the same recording (time shift) while it is in progress! (at least 10 minutes of recording must be done ) bad o missing features: ================================== - no video effects during music playback, just the playlist menu - no screen saver setting if you pause DVD playing (although, after several minutes of waiting, I stopped the video by myself!) - slow when DVD playing goes from first layer to layer 2, need 3 to 4 seconds... very bad - plays divx on DVD discs but cannot copy divx files from DVD disc to hard disk - does not records programs on hard disk using divx format, but can record with several recording quality ( using Standard recording quality can register over 30 hours on 80 GB hard disc) - if you delete a previous recording on hd, you cannot undelete it (may be useful considering hard disk is 80 GB) - showview and other features (eg commercial skipping) is useless in Italy ;-)

Very easy to use menu system. Plays avi's on DVD and CD very well. Copy from HDD to DVD and back. Plays DVD with mp3, jpg and avi files, on same disk. Cheap, quiet. Very nice drive. Pleasantly surprised. Could look better, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder
