Have given this very light use since purchase in 2007.

Had an odd experience, though, possibly a positive, if it happens with all units:

Manual specifically says *no* recording capability to DVD-R/RW. However, I accidentally started a recording on a Ritek F1 DVD-R and didn't realize it until the recording time had ended.

The disc *would* play back in the Protron (not a surprise) and another old LiteOn DVD recorder (surprise) I have. It would not play in any standalone DVD players (no surprise). Playing it in that second DVD recorder, I was alerted that it would need to be finalized for compatibility. I took the DVD-R back to the Protron, let it run through the finalization, and the result was a disc that would play in any of my numerous other standalones. (Yes, I double-checked that it was a DVD-R disc, not a mis-labled DVD+R.)

I've knocked a point off my rating because the unit, now 4+ years old (light use), occasionally chokes on DVD+Rs toward the outer edge of disc playback, on discs that play just fine in standalones.

Here's my problem:
I record a few titles on a standard DVD+R (yes, it is compatible) and 2 times out of ten, it works fine. I finalize the disc and it plays in other players perfectly fine (aside from occasional audio cut-outs). Most of the time, however, a hugely frustrating error occurs during the menu editing process. After I have just recorded a title, during the post-processing phase, or when I have set a title image, changed the title name, or other pre-finalizing tasks for any given disc, the entire menu (indeed, the recorder itself) completely freezes up. Nothing can be done for it but to simply unplug the recorder or switch off the power strip. When it is again powered up, it no longer recognizes all of the disc's recorded titles. It treats it as if it's a blank disc with however much time remaining on the disc. Essentially, I lose ALL the titles I have spent countless hours recording. It has so far ruined over ten perfectly good DVD+R discs. If it is an easily solved problem (like cleaning the eye), please tell me what's wrong, because I can't get any help from the Indians on the "tech support" line and I'm ready to chuck the miserable mechanical monster out the window. *Email replys to address below.

Closeout priced at H.H. Gregg in TN.

Website www.protronusa.com returns message of

Toll-free number works.

I might give it a 10/10, but since I've only used it for a week, I'll give it a 9/10. Has played everything I've tried so far.

So far this recorder has "time recorded" very well with Office Depot brend of DVD+. The only problem thus far is when I try to edit the title before finalizing the disc. It will allow me to type in the new title but if it contains more than one word, it refuses to add a second word??? This has been true after each and every recording so far??? Otherwise, for the money, it works well!!!

Would have given a 10 if the title problem could be resolved.

Simple and stylish. No frills budget player. Works with unbranded sample DVD+R in the box and Memorex DVD+R.
Performs PAL -> NTSC conversion without a hitch
Records either PAL or NTSC signal
Seems like a clone of COBY DVDR1100 but region hack does not work.
