| Records fine from both VCR and DVR, but cannot playback on a PC/Laptop. No matter how I format the disc I cannot get more than half of what I record to playback on my PC. I received this as a gift for Christmas. A real piece of junk. At 4 hr format 57 min, 3 hr 57 min, at 2 hr 29 min. Although they do playback fine on the unit. |

I give this recorder a 2 only because it works appropriately about 50 percent of the time (and worked well for the first 5 or 6 months). Some of the flaws follow:
1. Does not recognize many blank discs as recordable (even the HP discs suggested in the manual). When discs are not recognized, the player display continues to read LOAD. When that happens, the only way to remove the disc is to cut the power to the unit, wait a few seconds before restoring power, and press the EJECT button immediately after the LOAD message appears on the player display.
2. With some blank discs, will initially record partial material on the blank disc and then not record on the same disc (to fill it up) when replaced in the recorder for further recording (and no, I did not finalize disc after initial recording).
3. Will not finalize some recorded discs (despite clicking STOP twice) which is necessary to play discs on other DVD players.
4. Will not record personal home videos from camcorder or VCR without UNAUTHORIZED RECORDING message appearing. Therefore, the final product is bits and pieces of the original personal home video material. It is as if it were acknowledging a COPY PROTECT on my personal home videos.
5. Successfully records on about 70 percent of HP DVD plus R and RW discs.
6. Sucessfully records on about 50 percent of Memorex discs of the same format.
7. Sucessfully records on about 10 percent of Maxell discs of the same format.
8. Did not recognize any of the 5 Verbatim discs that I tried (same format as above).
These comments are based on personal experiences with one specific unit. |

First off - the only reason I gave this item a "1" rating is because I couldn't give it a NEGATIVE rating!
This is by far the WORST electronic item I have EVER bought. I bought a unit at Best Buy for over $300. I found it was defective. 90% of the time it wouldn't recognize blank DVDs, even the ones recomended in the manual. One day it just decided to stop working all together. The unit wouldn't even turn on. So I exchanged it for a brand new one.
After getting it home and connecting it I was RELATIVELY happy with it ... for a short while. For approximately 31 days it worked "OK" at best. Just days after the 30 day return policy, it started acting up. I tried returning it to Best Buy of course they said no. Ok, I admit at being salty with Best Buy over the experiance but let me give you a brief run down of the ACTUAL problems that prove the unit is junk rather than me being upset with Best Buys return policy.
First off, if you are watching a DVD that you SOMEHOW ACTUALLY got this unit to burn, it's ok. Decent quality picture and sound. However ANY OTHER DVD is nearly unwatchable. So far, every movie I've rented, purchased or burned on my computer is unwatchable. I can understand burned copies not working, but brand new studio released movies? The movie shows up VERY pixelated. Every few seconds (especially during fast movement/dark to light scenes) there is MAJOR pixelation problems.
Quite often it will also freeze up for a few seconds and skip. Mind you, this is from studio released movies. It makes it impossible to get into any movie with the constant skipping.
Also, playing CD's is also not going to happen. In between songs or during relatively quiet sections of a song you get alot of static. While the static is merely a HUGE annoyance, if the volume level is turned up it WILL damage your speakers so playing CDs is not recomended.
I have cleaned the lens with several lens cleaners to no avail as well. Here is where the story gets REAL good. I contacted Poloroid Electronics and explained my problems and asked if maybe there was a firmware update. They said that there were no plans for any firmware update. I then asked them what the problems sounded like to them then and they said they have no idea. So I asked what I'm supposed to do with this unit and they told me to return it. WHen I told them I couldn't as it had been over 30 days they said "Well, I guess you're stuck with it then." Nice customer service huh? If their headquarters were near me I would return it alright - right through there window! Or better yet I would shove up a very uncomfortable place of the customer service departments manager .... sideways!
AVOID THIS ITEM LIKE THE FREAKIN' PLAGUE! Just for giggles, avoid ANY POLOROID PRODUCT! JUNK - PURE JUNK! |

I use this for recording only, to transcribe VHS tapes onto DVD.
The only "feature" I use, beyond "Record" and "Finalize", is the "Setup" menu where I adjust the recording resolution according to the lencth of the tape I am copying (1 hour, 2 hour, or 3 hour).
Easy to use, good results. |

| Of the dozens of attempts I've made to copy, only 6 or so have worked. If it doesn't like a disk for any reason it locks, and can only be freed with a re-boot and immediate eject. Sometimes it can be "tricked" into working by starting with a purchased movie, then switching with a blank disk. Some disks work fine on the second (or 3rd or 4th) attempt. Once it indicated REC status normally, but afterward the disk was unreadable on any player. Some videos generate a RECORDING PROHIBITED meassage, but can be copied without hesitation on another attempt. As far as player goes, remote left and right direction keys often do not work in menus. Sometimes up and down actually will mean "next" and therefore are adequate. On other titles left and right menu options are inaccessible on this player. |

Excellent unit for $250 at best buy (sale). Discs
play well on my other dvd players. Only quirk is that
when you hit record it takes a while (8 sec) before
it actually does. DVD+ performs a lot better than -'s
Been using generic discs for recording too. |

I bought this recorder on the spot at Best Buy, without doing any research (like I normally do) on it. It was a customer return, and priced at $209.00 so I figgured that what the heck, if it doesn't work, I still have 30 days to return it. After I bought it I read the previous comment, and I almost returned it without trying it.
OK, so I hooked it up and did the setup, and tried to record like a VCR and after 19 minutes it stopped saying I had a diak error. Great..... So I took the advise (written in the manual) on what disks to use, and bought some HP RW's. Put a tape into my VCR hit record on the DVR, and it recorded a 2 hour movie without a hitch, and crystal clear to boot.
I also used TDK disks in the machine, they worked great as well. The other disks I used that originally gave me an error, were Fuji....but I tried them again, and all 5 disks in the pack worked great. So I don't know why the glitch first time around, I even re-used the disk that gave me an error.
The only reason I didn't give it a higher rating, is that I used fuji DVD+R and they recorded fine, I finilazed the disk, and it plays back fine on this recorder, however they won't play on my portable DVD player, or computer. The DVD+RW's play fine. So I'll just record only on the RW's.
Bottom line. There wasn't much out on the net on this Polaroid recorder, I personally found it to work great so far. I've recorder about 10 DVD's so far that look great on playback, and I only paid $209.00 for it. Considering all the other ones out there are averaging $500, I made out well. |

This unit is an unholy piece of junk. I purchased one at Best Buy for US$329. 21 days later I returned it.
It had the following problems.
Occasionally when recording a DVD it would just stop recording. I started a 2 hour recording and it stopped after 65 minutes. Another 1 hour recording stopped after 7 minutes. Just for fun I tried adding another title and it continued on recording right where it left off.
I tried to do a timer recording. I inserted a fresh new DVD. When the timer kicked in, the display on the TV went blank, and then displayed the message NEW DISK.. I ejected the disk, then closed the drawer, and hit record and it recorded fine.
DVD+RWs recorded on it stutter when played back on other DVD players
No DVD (+R/+RW) recorded on this unit would playback properly on a PC. Every DVDs I make in the unit and, regardless of the software used for playback on a PC (WMP 9, WinDVD, Mediamatics, RealPlayer) the playback on a PC freezes at 29 minutes 1 second. They do playback fine on a regular DVD player. I've used both DVD+R/ DVD+RW media.
About the recordings: all were made at the 120 minute 'speed'. In the case of the +R discs they have been finalised. Some of them had more than one title on them, some have had several titles. Chapter marks were set every 5 minutes.
About the playback: Tried 3 different PCs (2 laptops, 1 desktop) all running WinXP Pro. All disks play fine on the the recording unit (the DVR-0900), but also on regular DVD players (2 tested). They also play fine in a playstation.
One odd thing that I notice is that the DVD+R/+RWs made by the DVD-0900 show an incorrect title structure when played in WMP 9 (and other players). Regardless of the number of titles recorded, every disc shows at least 6 titles. So if I record 3 titles, I get titles one to three, plus 3 'ghosted' titles that show that they have one chapter. If I click on ghost title 4, I get title 1.If I look at the file structure, I see 1 VOB file of 1.048 gig. This would be about the size for 29 minutes.
I called Polaroid about it, and dealt with a clueless individual at an offshore call centre. Their advice -- return it for a replacement. So I did ... but not with another Polaroid

Bought from Costco in Montreal. 470$ CND
Not easy to use. It's easy to "scrap" a DVD-R only by turning off the player. Music CD player is horrible. Annoying blue led on the front. Since it is used as VCR you cannot watch TV while listening a music CD, the image display while playing CD will burn your TV soon. User manuel is a joke: both english/French translation are so bad you won't understand. Exemple:"If you want to watch TV while playing a Music CD, Eject the disk and remove it from the tray first". Even when not loaded with a disk we always hear an anoying sound from the player(Bizzzzzzz).
DOn't buy, it's a scrap unless you won't a cheap DVD recorder and that's what it is. |
