Bought this unit after some advise on the dvdr newsgroup.
Boy, do I regret. The first unit died after 1 day, the second unit after 1 week and the 3rd unit is still at Pioneer for repair.
This customer service is the worst ever (and the unit also). I really don't get the fuzz about it.
If you want to buy a Pioneer, do it, but don't complain.

Purchased the Pioneer DVR-7000 to convert home movies to DVDs. The quality of the video is good. I use blank DVD-Rs -- prefer Pioneer or Memorex-- don't use any cheap ones, they tend to freeze when using chaptering or in search mode. I know that Khypermedia DVD-Rs sold at OfficeMax are not good to use at all.
I did transfer home movies from VHS tapes, Betamax Tapes and old 8mm home movies. Using the VR-2 mode, I am able to transfer 2 hours of VHS tape to a DVD. Of course the quality of video is only as good as the original VHS tape that is being transferred. I was also able to transfer Beta tapes, some of my Beta tapes were 3 or 4 minutes longer than 2 hours, but the recorder just stopped, -- disk full. I was able to title, name chapter, and finalize without any problems even though it said the disk was full.
I was able to transfer old home-style 8mm movies using an Amibico Transfer box and digital video camera. I then hooked up the digital video camera to the DVD and copied away. Some of the film I had was 45 years old, so I was happy to get those copied off to DVD.
I was able to combine 21 separate video segments of Stevie Nicks performances I had recorded from TV etc. Each time I stopped the recording, it allowed me to create a separate chapter name (but limited to 24 letters), which is fine for navigation. You can have up to 99 chapters. You can also TITLE the DVD. HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER, the titling feature is tough to navigate, it is cumbersome, you have to scroll and scroll and scroll. Also before you begin any titling session, you have to delete the standard day, time, input letter, that is automatically put in by the recorder, that is so annoying!!!
We did use the Pioneer DVD-RW mode and free DVD-RW blank disk that came with the unit. That worked great too, not sure yet how many times it can be re-used, will use that more later.
We have not recorded anything from TV with it, we don't use it as a VCR replacement currently, because we are too busy transferring the movies etc. We are now using it to commercially to transfer home movies to DVD for customers. So far all the recorded DVD-R have worked on all the different DVD players, so far no capability issues.
The DVR-7000 does have a few limations, the titling feature as mentioned above, the remote is not as heavy duty as it needs to be for extended use if doing a lot of titling, and we would liked it to have more inputs. It does have 3 and 1 - I-link (EEE1394 firewire). We can't control the audio record level, the video controls are limited to, we wanted to adjust the gamma on input. The unit is costly at $1300 for a VCR replacement, and it doesn't not have as much controls if used commerically. But overall we are happy with it.
In conclusion, if you want to convert hours of vhs tapes to DVD this is the recorder. This DVD recorder is really great for archiving. The cost of blank media and cost of the recorder are too much in my opinion for daily recording of soap operas, etc.

Be sure and contact Pioneer about the firmware release posted here:
https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/Co ... 4,00.html.
It resolves the problem of Dark(Night)scene degradation. |

Purchased this machine about 4 months ago. Decided on this machine over the Panasonic due to the firewire in/out feature. Have to say that this machine is excellent. I have just started recording all my camcorder tapes over to DVD so that I can re-use the tapes, and the DVD's look fantastic.
I'll try to add to the previous review instead of restating things. In video mode (as opposed to the VR mode), when you stop the recording, the machine will continue to record for up to 30 seconds - for example if you stop recording at 75:13, it will record until 75:30 or if you stop at 75:31, it will record until 76:00. This is a slight issue for me - if I am doing a compilation of sitcoms, they inevitably always seems to want to end at 22:02 and I have to tape 28 seconds more. Of course, one could always just pause (which stops right away) and then tape the next show, but I prefer to have each show as a separate item instead of having 4 shows with chapter stops at each beginning (my preference).
VR mode offers much more flexibility, but is only available on DVD-RW discs. When you stop a recording, there is no time delay. And as mentioned in the other review, you are able to edit much easier and have much longer titles.
I cannot comment on the compatibility of the recordings with other drives really, as the existing DVD machines I had were older machines. My computer's DVD drive plays the discs (video mode), but my older Panasonic and Apex DVD players (about 2-3 years old) do not. It's not a big deal to me as this Pioneer unit has become my main DVD player - it produces a fanastic picture when playing commercial DVD's, and any DVD's I make I would watch on that player anyway.
I have had good luck with media - I have purchased no-name or Princo DVD-R's and DVD-RW's off of Ebay for about $2/disc (depending on the deal) and have not had one problem with recording on them. When you can spend that kind of money on a disc instead of 5x that, this machine's initial price starts to pay off over time.
Overall, the Pioneer is more expensive than some of the other alternatives, but I do not regret the purchase. The quality of the product is top-notch, I'm able to record old movies not likely to be released on DVD, and compatible media is inexpensive. |

I bought the DVR-7000, which I was told by a Pioneer rep at NAB (Vegas) is the same machine as the 9000, except the 7000 is silver with RCA inputs and the 9000 is black with BNC inputs. Oh, and the 7000 runs around $500 less. It's a nice machine. Has several in/outputs. Progressive scan. Firewire in/out. Each in/out has it's own picture quality adjustments, i.e. white balance, black balance, color, noise reduction, etc. (the firewire does not have these adjustments). Two record modes: Video mode has two quality settings: 1hour and 2 hour. VR mode has about 30 quality settings, from 1 hour to 6 hours. The picture quality of the VR mode seems much better than that of Video mode, to my eye. I haven't yet mastered the video recording adjustments, so it's possible I just don't have it set correctly. Unfortunately, almost no other players will play VR mode. In VR mode, you can create a playlist and edit out parts of your recording. When you play it back, there is no lag at the edit points. You can not only set up to 8 events for recording, but you can "Program" DVD-RW discs with 8 of its own timers, so in effect you have an unlimited number of events. CONS: VR mode is only for DVD-RW, and the file format isn't VOB, so they can only be played back on this machine and two or three other players. (there's a rumor that the next generation will allow VR recording on DVD-R). Video mode Discs seem to me to have the same compatability issues as those recorded with the A-03 - some players won't play them at all, some will play them w/o any problems, and some will play half the disc but not the rest. This may be a media problem however. It creates generic menu pages that look nice, but the method for titling buttons will make you want to shoot yourself. Though I like the recorder, I wish the price of the Panasonic E-20 hadn't fallen to $550 3 weeks after I bought the Pioneer!
