Has anyone used 8x or 16x discs with this unit? The older pioneer DVD recorders needed a firmware upgrade to use 4x discs without damage to the unit.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated. |

| I have used for over 1 year now and am very pleased with the unit. The hard drive crashed exactly 4 days after the 1 year warranty expired, but Pioneer agreed to fix it free of charge for me. The turnaround in repairs was very fast and the customer service was excellent. It takes a bit of time to learn all the features of this DVD recorder and I'm still learning! The recorder makes excellent copies to DVD-R media and I'm converting old VHS tapes to DVD Media. |

This model is replaced by the DVR-520H which has a faster DVD recorder, some improvements to the 30-second skip mode and a couple other refinements. The 510 has a jog shuttle dial on the front that the 520 does not have. However, I've never used the shuttle dial because I've always operated the DVR from the remote control.
The machine is wonderful. It has many features to customize the recording and playback quality. It also plays mp3 and photo disks. Because of its many settings, you'll find yourself re-reading the manual during the first several months of use. I keep discovering a new trick that I hadn't previously noticed.
My first unit had a hard drive crash in the first week and I was able to exchange it for another at the dealer. Note that Pioneer does not offer any warranty unless the product is purchased from an authorized Pioneer dealer. If you buy elsewhere be sure that the dealer offers its own warranty.
I am totally happy and impressed with how well this unit performs and the flexibility it provides. |

| to cnabors re editing on pioneer dvr 510 does have a very good editing system which is operated by the remote control, you will find it a bit clumsy at first but once you use it with the help of the manual you will find it quite easy to use. it will certainld do what you have in mind and with frame accurate switched on it will produce seemless editing out of the ads. Provided you do not want fancy menus which the machine only provides a handful of preset menus editing results are every bit as good as what you can do on the computer , hope this helps |

| great machine but ruined by the method of creating 16:9 widescreen recordings. Machine records by compressing 16:9 into a 4:3 aspect ratio and relies on being connected to a wide screen tv to restore the aspect ratio. This makes dvds incompatable with any 4:3 ratio tvs. Pity they did not do genuine widescreen recording like the sony gx7 does in the dvd-r/rw mode |

I'll concure with the previous post. After using the 510H for a while I'm quite satisfied. There are a few minor caveats like the frame accurate setting shouldn't even be there! But it is and you should leave it off because it defeats the high speed copy. The HS is very nice. (typical 25 min for a full disk) The main trick is to be sure to record to the HD with compression set high enough to fit everything onto the DVD. If you do that, all your chapter points also get copied to the DVD. If you overshoot (record with too much quality/length to fit onto a DVD, you can still burn a DVD by changing to higher compression but you gain another generation of compression (minor quality hit), no high speed burns (back to real time), and you lose your chapter points (options for default 10 or 15 minute points).
The DV I/O is why I bought this one for my edit room.
Copy protected disks won't play out the DV port. But macroguard may be stripped from the analog out! I didn't check many disks for this. (so you are going back to tape, why?)
One problem I had is it's seems fussy about incoming signal. Less than perfect VHS might give trouble. I even had to run (old) cable box signal through a TBC. Decent TBCs cost more than this unit. Going through a DV camera and into the DV port serves as a TBC.
This unit is a good use of money. |

| This unit works well. I am still playing around with it, but I have alot of VHS tapes recorded SLP at 6 hours, and I want to convert them to DVD. I can set the recorder to save the entire 6 hours to Hard Drive, then I can edit out parts I don't like, by creating "title" chunks, then save to DVD. Editing from the Hard Drive with "Frame Accuracy" set to OFF moves your editing mark off 0.5 seconds. You can fix this by turning it ON, but then you seem to lose the ability to "high-speed" record to DVD. :( I seem to have to record in REAL TIME, that is it takes 2 hours to record a 2 hour DVD!! With 80 gigs, recording at SP speed, I can probably fit 6 6-hour VHS tapes on hard drive, then the tedium of editing begins, then the long process of recording out to DVD begins. Well, it's not as elegant as it could be, but the final product on DVD is lookin' sharp! Much better picture quality transfer than I've seen before with video capture, and I haven't even tried anything but SP mode! Summary: works great, editing is a bit clumsy, and you'll spend a lot of time editing and then burning, but final product is great-looking. |
