| Had trouble with the guide plus for my area. Also does not want to record on L1 input and will at times change channels to a blank screen when viewing L1 stations.Example was watching sci-fi channel through dish net and for some odd reason swithed channels to the sci fi channel for cable( a station i dont subscribe to).Very long and not easy set up process.Do as the manual says and hook everything up and leave off for 24 hours and setup is much easier.Firmware updates available for download which is a plus in my opinion.Firmware improves record stop function and can now use stop button on remote.Picture color quality is excellent, however record quality is low(picture has some jaggies even at 2.5 hour time). Not a bad unit for the money, better if Guide could be turned off. |

This is a HD/DVD Recorder, 80GB HD, and it works great for that. It also displays dvds and vcds and svcds without much problems, although it can be a bit picky about I think bitrates.
As long as the dvds and (s)vcds conform completely to the standards you're ok.
It's great as a recorder, but I'm going to get a divx capable player on the side for the actual viewing of stuff I make myself (and dl of course), cause this one's way too picky. Especially the lack of mpeg-iso is terrible, you don't want to author everything.. |

I ended up taking this one back to the shop. The remote is cheap and nasty with little unreadable buttons.
When setting the timer on some channels the settings would vanish after a few seconds, this happens when using any of the avaiable methods.
When you start recoding by pressing the record button it is impossible to stop the recording. The instuctions manual mentions none existant menu options regarding stopping a recording manually.
The quality of the recordings is very good compaired to Panasonic and JVC. Even the demo's on the HD look like VCD in some places, but maybe they were recorden on a low setting.
Sense and simplicity, what a joke. |

Have written to DVD+R and +RW. Both ok. Although could not play the +RW on an XBox with DVD option. The +R worked fine by comparison.
Machine is quite loud in standby, as the fan seems to be running constantly day and night.
Also had ca. 3 crashes in 6 weeks. The machine just doesnt respond to any keypress on the remote, not even to the power switch on the front. Only option is to pull the plug...

Hi:
I have bought this Write this week and it's works well but one feature. I can't save to DVD+RW the programs i save on the HD. When i go to HDD Browser and select one show (about 30 min.) and press the green button it gives a error. In fact the green option is not available in the display menu, the color of the button is grayed. The manual says that if the green button is not available you have to clean the buffer, i have done with no success. Did you save anything to disk? what i'm doing wront ? |

Can anyone take a movie (analog or digital)
moving the camera horisontal and vertically.
Record this and burn to DVD
Pleas give us the result.
This will tell if the hdrw720 encoding is OK or not.

I had problems with the Guide plus installation. The manual does not indicate that the Guideplus info cannot be saved and the machine cannot be switched off when it is in Demo mode. As the installation procedure leads you into the demo mode its a natural trap. I had sent Philips Customer service an email and was very impressed as the answer was there within 24 hours (I needed to delete the demo videos and then all was ok).
Can safely say that the Manual(s) are not very well organised or translated. The German version is a little better than the english version (at least with the semantics - they both appear to be a translation from some other language). The Quick Guide helps, but mixes installation information with operating instructions; the former are not any use after the initial installation, so the whole guide is reduced in its use. For the Installation you need the main manual anyway.
Can also access the philips "secret menu" via the 1-5-9 sequence. Have not tried doing anything yet with it though. |

Rocks. The killer app (at least for my family) is the guideplus+ EPG feature.
This combined with the HD and Recorder makes it very neat. Have waited 8 weeks for this to come out in Stuttgart, MediaMarket got 2 in on Monday and I picked one up that same evening.
Complex to understand the different controls (I'm only mortal).
Only other drawback is that it uses DVD+R(W)s. Some may consider that a bonus, but I have preferred the DVD-Rs up to now, as thats what my apple toasts, but now I have both.
The display is quite bright, although you can reduce the brightness or switch it off completely for the film buffs.
Plenty of connectors at the rear to enable the best connection to the TV (YUV, 1x Scart in/out, 1x Scart in, optical audio out, digital audio out)
Summary, looks good, does the job and has an EPG built in (Guideplus+)
