| I have found that this worked excellently for replacing my video recorder, although I have had a few problems; 1. no DVD-R or DVD-RW I have recorded, from TV, Video or Camcorder in the Philips DVDR980 will play in any other DVD player I have in my house, or in any DVD player my family use. 2. It recently broke down and sent it to Philips to repair and that repair lasted a week. 3. Their is very little help from Philips on their UK website, they do not acknowledge the existance of the DVDR980, only the DVDR985. I may be at fault here not the equipment and would well any help enduring that DVDs I record can be viewed by my family in their DVD players. Thanks. |

Very good indeed, hardly any coasters in 3 months of intensive use. I record from TV all the programs I cant view, just like I did with the VCR. Piece of cake. The user's manual also good, which is really something to write home about.
BUT, what Philips doesnt say is that if you use the firewire to record a dvd, it adds time marks now an then, visible when u play the dvd on another player (not a Philips family one). So, watch out when u stream videos from your computer or camera to this machine, if u use the firewire cable. Philips, I think that was a very silly thing to do. |

This recorder is an excellent deal for the price. I have transfered my home video tape collection to over 20 DVD's with no problems. I can add chapters, separate titles, and cut out commercials (add a chapter before and after the commercial and mark it as hidden). Before I got this recorder it used to take me about 10 hours to produce 2 hours of MPEG2 video from my Digital Video Camera on my PC. The Philips records in real time so I can record and add all titles and chapters in 2.5 hours.
The DVD's are expensive but I found the best deal on Generic DVD's at Rima.com. They work fine with no errors. |
