I bought this product second handed, for around $45, it had the "no disc" problem, as I had no warranty I decided to repair it myself, I opened the player and I cleaned the laser lens with an old T-shirt, and then it recognised discs, and was able to record, but it can't read even it's own discs, I have another DVD player which plays them good, so if you have no warranty try cleaning the lens it may save you time and money.

the customer service from Philips was good. I received a phone call after my complaint, and he said he would see what he could do in terms of costs. The service guy came to my home and fixed the player in half an hour. So far so good, I hope it stays that way. I had to pay for the labour cost, but material cost was free, otherwise it would have doubled the total cost :-) not sure what was wrong, it looked like he replaced the whole dvd tray with motor.

Re: Philips 890

I have recently experienced the'no disc'syndrome on the player. Looked through the entire manual to find the solution but none available. After reading the comments on this forum I now know its a design fault. It will not play CD's or DVD's. Emailed Philips HK and they said it might be the reader head. As the player is no longer under warranty, I will have to pay to have it fixed! Very disappointed that after only 2 years of use that there is something wrong with it. Even more disappointed that having seen all your comments that Philips are not admitting that there is some kind of fault from the beginning. I have yet to hear from Philips HK as to whether they will fix the player for free after I copied and emailed some of your comments. I will keep you all posted

My Philips DVRR80 works perfectly with "DVD+RW 4x discs" but will not allow "DVD+RW 1-4x variable speed discs" to be recorded or edited reliably. I have tried Philips and JVC dics brands. I usually have to switch the machine on and off or open and close the tray numerous times to get one to work properly. It will always play anything I've managed to record manually using the machine on the variable speed discs, but will not always allow editing and additional recordings to be made without a lot of fiddling around.
I sometimes get no discs or the disc starts playing immdiately after being read. But none of these problems ever occurs with the fixed speed discs.

Philps solution: send it to their one and only UK authorized service centre hudreds of miles away from my home and pay a set service charge of £140! HUH!

This is a terrible unit, it had the dvd drive replaced after 6 months, then behaved ok for 6 months, but now will not record at all, and gets very hot in operation as a simple DVDV player and pretty much gives up working after about an hour.

I would stay clear of this device and have had a very poor treatment at the hands of Philips customer services so would strongly commend you to not ever buy philips devices

Ref: Philips DVDR890
I use recorder mainly to record & playback TV programs and burned discs from my PC. I have most success using Philips DVD+RW 1-2.4x & Philips DVD+RW 1-4x, 4.7GB.

For the 1st year no problems recording & playing TV material & audio CD, but had limited success with my PC burned (Super)Video CD's & gave up on them.

The DVDR890 packed up soon after with "NO DISC" in the display. Tried every thing in the instruction book to no avail.

Contacted the supplyer and was told that this was a known fault. They promtly sent it back to philips for repair. It was returned 7 days later repaired. At this point I would have rated this player/recorder 9 out of 10 especialy with this promt service.

No problems, for approx. the next 6 months then minor intermitant faults started to appear, which I lived with, but now they have become too numerous and unacceptable.

Now the problems:
1. Discs failed to record on timed recordings
2. Discs record, but failed to replay. Usually came up "NO DATA DETECTED" or "NO DISC"
3. Does not always allow deleting of timed recordings on the menu, such as when I have made an error inputting.
4. Self burnt DVD's. Menus stop functioning though it was still possible to play these DVD's by manualy selecting the titles & chapters in the system menu, but no way can I make the burnt selection menues re-work.
5. Picture has been gradually slipping up the TV screen. It has now got to the point that you cannot see the system menu bar to be able to select titles & chapters or any other function. When watching recoded play backs a black bar of about 2.5cm (1") takes up the bottom of the screen and all infomation at the top is not visable.

The above problems seem to me to be software problems. I have been in contact with Philips today and they they are sending me a software update disc to see if the some of the above can be repaired.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Well I have 6 DVDR880 and 6 DVDR890 2002 models.
Two 890 models are still woirking although one has had the head from a dead machine put in. All the other DVDR drives are showing NO DISK when origionals are inserted. However they all record to DVDRW and DVDR disks and play them, and Music CDs play and the firmware disks work.

I took the head out of the dead machine this had a board error. and tryed it in all of the 890 machines all of them work as long as you change the head.

Why have Philips not recalled them. I bought them all second hand for a song knowing some were dead. But for them all to have the same error is amasing.

I hope some one out there can help. I need to know if there is a way of re-alinging the heads or if there is a place where you can buy new or recon heads.

Thank you.

Advertising promised features such as"Total Compatability, Computer Interface, Camcorder connection via i.link etc, Reads ALL Disk formats etc." I am finding that these claims are not true.
(1) i.link data is one directional only - camera to recorder, but not the reverse.

(2) Video footage produced as a DVD movie on my computer and recorded on Philips own DVD+RW disks will not play on the 890 although the same disk plays O.K. on other cheaper brands.

(3)Tried installing the update patch as mentioned by a previous report - followed all instructions but the 890 would not read the CD-R disk that I had written the data to.

The 890 appears to work fine when it comes to recording and playing back it own material or playing a rented DVD Movie but anything else gives error messages usually NO DISK or DISK ERROR.

Would like to hear from anyone else who has managed to overcome similar problems.

My Philips DVDR 890 went well for the first 4 or 5 weeks, then it started reporting "disc errors" quite frequently. Worse still, anything on the disc was wiped and the "empty disc" error was displayed.

After reporting this situation to Philips, they said the laser was faulty and they replaced it under warranty. But the same happened with the new laser, particularly when recording with firewire from the camcorder on the high quality setting.

Philips then said that they had a new laser available and that they wanted to install this under warranty. This laser is even worse than the other two, I get the disc error messages very frequently, even when using Philips discs and just recording TV programs on SP+.

Philips then said that the only answer is to wait until the DVDR 75 is released and they would replace the DVDR 890 with this. Several times I have reported to Philips that the unit runs quite hot after recording for an hour or so. Philips agree that their DVD recorders generate a lot of heat. Several times when the machine has cooled down I am able to use a Philips disc that the unit previously would not record on.

Philips customer care has been really great and sympathetic to the problems, so I hope the DVDR 75 is able to record without all these disc errors.

I got the 'No Disk' error too, took it back to Dealer and they put a new read laser in and now no problems.
This recorder will not read -R or -RW disks, it says that in the manual! It records to +R and +RW without problems if they are HP or Philips disks, but don't try it with cheap supermarket +RW disks coz they just don't hack it.
If the picture is wobbly, check the quality of the leads out, use good quality interconnects all round beecause they can degrade the signal both in and out. Use the SVHS input if you can, and the component output to the TV (If it is supported)for best results. Once recorded DVD+Rs have to be 'finalised' this is quick and easy on the menu options, then they will play in everything I have tried them in including my HP DVDR computer drive. The DVD+RWs do not need finalising, but they will not play in as many players as the DVD+Rs.
I use another old Yamaha player connected to a Dazzle Capture card and Moviestar 5 and DVD complete, play a few chapters of my newly recorded disk, record them in Moviestar , and make professional looking covers for the Jackets too using DVD Complete's Label Generator. They look perfect!

Purchased mine in March. 03..... It was going great up until now I'm getting no disc errors on pre recorded region 2 discs. Prior to that I was more than happy with the product. I rang Philips I was told to return to store. They are aware of the no disc problem.... Not sure if they know what's wrong themselves. They did'nt really offer any real explanation as to why this is happening. I wont rate it just yet I will have to see what happens to the replacement model.

I have had this for about 4 month and in the start it worked fine. Now it is giving me a hard time. I stops in the middle of a movie and will not reconise the DVD. First after turning it of and on it works again. It seem it is having trouble with switching between burned and not burned DVD's.

Now I will send it back and hopefull get it fixed.

Have anyone had the same troubles?

I think the machine is great. I have had it some time and think it works really well. However, I have found one big problem.

I have recorded DVD+RWs and have leant them to my cousin who has no problem in watching them on his PS2. I have tried them on my PS2 and also my Hyundai 302A but haven't been able to get them to work - "error reading disc" or "no disc". How come he can play them and I can't? This is strange and has caused me alot of headaches tryign to go through the set-ups etc.

Is this a problem with the Philips or both the other players? My Hyundai DVD player model is on the list for playing DVD+RWs and has the mark on its instr. manual!!!!!

Hi ,
Just bought this dvd- recorder . I like it .
It records on + R and + RW. Didn't find any problems!!
I have used Philips + RW 's only at this point.
Great thing is I capture my vcr stuff straight to DVD.
I bought a U.S. made disk and Now I'm able to record NTSC ( normal when you put in a pal disk and you wanna record ntsc video : It says : Wrong disk!!).
Any how After recording it to + RW , I ripp the disks and edit them with a dvd Authoring Tool .
It works great for me !! . The price is good ( Here in Holland)and for my purposes it's a good machine..
OK That's my report.
