| This is a good recorder...while it works. I had mine for 2 years and got it repaired twice during that time. It'll work fine for about a year or so and does great recordings. The recording picture quality is pretty good, especially in M1 recording mode, and the playback quality on the component connections looks great. It also output a PAL signal, which was quite nice. But after a year or so of normal use commercial discs start to skip and stutter a lot, load times get longer and longer, and disc errors during recording increase. I lost several discs worth of recordings when the disc would simply fail either during recording or during finalization. Eventually it just gets to where it can't be used at all, even for playback of commercial discs. It's great while it works, but don't expect it to work long. |

| I like this machine , good quality recording BUT it has stopped recording and destroyed the disks several times if recording from vcr or dv camera. This seems to happen if recording is more tha 1,5 hour and may have to do with the unit getting hot...dont know how to get around this problem. Some philips dvd+r wont work with it and i hate the disk menu and remote control. What i can say is that its decent quality for the price but with some major cons that whould boost the unit if overcome.. |

| I have had my DVDR75 for over 2 years now, I would have rated it much higher, but a couple of months ago, it started to act up. Recordings on DVD+R discs, when full, would not finalise properly and I would lose the entire disc of recordings. With DVD+RW's, there was the same problem, but I found that if I copied those affected discs to another DVD+RW on my PC, then the copy would be OK, but I would not be able to edit recording titles or make sections of recordings invisible. I did contact Philips about two weeks ago and I have still not received a reply. It's a pity, as it was pretty good for the first 23 months. |

It seems to get cranky when I try to play a DVD-RW that I recorded on it. Sometimes it will play it, sometimes it will not recognize that I have a disk in it, and sometimes it will flash up and down over the menu until I hit 'Play'.
There are times I will put in a DVD-RW that I recorded and it will play with no problems, and allow me to add recordings to it. Other times, that same disk will not register at all.
The problems seem to happen if I unplug everything so I can rearrange my furniture. When I set it up again, that's when the player doesn't know whether or not it wants to play the disk. I assume my disks don't like the factory settings, but I can't think how I had changed them, so I don't understand why it seems to cause problems if I unplug it. |

| Very frustrating product to use over two years, but has produced some good homemade DVDs and several 'bad disks'. Some DVD+RWs ruined after not more than ten recordings. Recording now completely failed on DVD+RW but playback still possible. Would need a lot of favourable evidence before buying another Philips DVD recorder. |

Pros
feature set is good.
component input grabbed my attention straight away.
all my recordings on TDK DVD+RW & DVD+R have been perfect.
I like the look.
Price in Oz.
Cons
Picture quality thru DVDR75 is dirty. Directly attached to my TV it's crisp & bright, thru the component connections it's dirty & not at all crisp.
Colours seem to bleed across the screen. eg.. A blue hued background or object will trace a faint blue bar across the screen.. same for red & green.
Startup is very very very slow.
It gets very warm.
Guide / manual book is ridiculous.
Remote has no eject.. I lead a fast life :o) |

I've used this to record movies from my Directv system. It does a good job for this. I have used various recording modes. If I want better quality, I use the 2 or 2X mode. Other times I use the 6x mode. I don't see much difference in the 1x(compared to 2x), or the 3x,4x (compared to 6x) mode.
I have had the various other problems people speak of here with regards to overheating and system hangs. Putting device in more ventilated area and upgrading firmware seems to have improved in some cases.
I've only been able to get it to work with Ritek DVD+RW's. I tried other brands, and the device acts like it is recording but when I stop the record mode, nothing is on the disc (says empty disc).
My MAJOR complaint with this recorder is when I want to copy the disc it records to my PC for further editing (taking out commercials, using TMPGEnc, etc). I get MANY read errors on my PC from these discs. The recordings play fine but I have trouble copying the data to my PC.
I'm currently investigating other options to perform the tasks I want to do. I would not recommend this recorder. |

| I have experienced a problem with pre-recorded DVDs - Starts to jump, stutter and skip scenes 30mins or so into the film. Obtained the latest software update from Philips which seem to cure it. However, the last film I rented started to do it again so the bug may have returned. Rated low for this reason. Otherwise - recordings of good quality, fairly easy to use which is just as well because the manual's not up to much. |

PLEASE HELP!!!
I have DVDR75/021 less than 1 year. It was a great recorder until i'm make upgrade firmware (ver.6.3 from official Philips website). From this moment recorder very often show "Disc error" on display, hanging on when press "rec" button /don't display red "circle"/, sometimes display "unknown disc format", even if loaded is new disc +RW and always overwrite first title on +RW disc when I want record next. Before upgrading, my philips has work properly. It's possibly come back to previous firmware?

Hi, I have a question: does anyone has expierence in using self burned Dual Layer disks in the DVDR75? I have burned a Dual Layer disk from Traxdata in my Pioneer DVR-108. The DVDR75 plays only the first layer and skips the rest of the tracks. The DVR-108 plays it perfect in the computer.
Is it the media that is incompatible or doesn't the DVDR75 play self burned Dual Layer disks at all?
Anyone?? |

| New update, I bought a second one from Tweeter, dead out of the box, now my over 1yr old one is doing roughly the same thing as the one from Tweeter, at this point, don't touch one of these without an extended warrenty. I give it a 5 for reliability. Copies were very good with FF15P. and Vorsteh, if yours is still doing the same thing, it's bad, the new Philips I got was doing that with both +R and +RW, my older one was doing that with +R and the +RW would record, however would not play back. |

| At 9 months, started failing to burn on the lighter dyed DVD+R's, works fine with Riteks and KHypermedia still, Philips says new firmware should take care of the other blank media, now on FF13K, don't know what the newest is. I disagree with same as tape quality from tapes, seems to take some of the grainyness off the older tapes, I use 3 and 4 hr modes mostly, 2 and 2.5 now and then. |

Pros:
-Beautiful picture quality
-Can record in PAL from a PAL signal and NTSC from an NTSC signal (does not convert). I don't think any other recorder can do this (beside the Cyberhome 1500)
-Can insert chapter markers on dvd+r while recording that will remain when playing in other dvd players (Cannot add chapter markers after recording)
Cons:
-Big One: Time/Date display remains after recording and will be displayed on other dvd players in lower left corner (If not for this big problem I would rate the recorder a 9/10). It cannot be hidden or erased. Philips tech support cannot solve this problem.
-DVD+R not as compatible on other dvd players as DVD-R (for example, a Pioneer dvd player will not play any DVD+R)
-No fan. Machine gets hot.
-Tech support not very good (then again neither is the Pioneer support)
-Manual is poor in explanations
-Can play PAL dvds but picture will flip on an NTSC tv.

I bought this recorder from Best Buy about three months ago.
It was working fine until recently the recorder started shuting down and goes into stand by mode around the 30 minute mark of recording. It does it on all the recording modes, and on different brand DVD's that I've used. (Imation. Phillips etc).
I called Phillips customer care and they had me unplug and reset the recorder back to the factory settings, but the problem still occurs. Has anybody else had this problem?
Other then that and with the exception of not having DTS I thought this was a great player. But now I'm growing very frustrated with it. Any suggestions?
