Good quality video and sound. Basic functions are easy to use. Guide plus is excellent. Can be difficult when doing more complicated things like video editing. Mostly because you are trying to do too much with a simple remote control.
He is can be fuzzy when it comes to certain DVD brands. I use Philips DVD’s and found out that I could transfer from the HD to the DVD without any problems. If I made a “Philips” DVD on another machine or PC the DVD recorder would not read it and stopped altogether. Since then I use Sony, Maxwell and MMORE. All the DVD’s I have work in the DVD recorder. He can have problems when they are made by another source. |

All in all, a very nice, very useful and fun machine to have. I'm a major critic of Philips products (I work for that company, but in another segment), but this one is really very good, and very nice value for money. This are the major plus and minus I found for now:
Plus:
+ Guide-Plus system, very easy to record programs
+ Multistandard, could finally convert some NTSC VHS to DVD PAL after trying many many other options.
+ MP3 playback is cool, could be user friendlier, though
+ Time buffer, pausing TV as you wish, etc.
+ DVD archiving was very easy, still have to try more of the DVD authoring features
+ Plays all my DVD's up to now
+ Hacking it for usage as multi-region was a breeze (see my comment in DVD Hacks)
Minus:
- Booting time is a bit long, but not annoying
- Teletext is cumbersome with the DVD remote. Better to use the TV remote
- Some features are not so intuitive, this is just a Philips thing I guess...
- recording from a NTSC VHS was a bit strange, it would record only a couple of minutes, I had to "force" to record 2 hours, maybe something with the standard, I don't know - but it worked!
- I recorded a dual audio (German/English)program but I could only watch it in german. Can be a RTFM problem, though... |

This DVD Recorder is excellent. My only complaint is that it can sometimes take a second or two for the unit to respond after pressing a button on the remote control but hey, I can live with that.
I've never had anything to do with DVD before (no players or recorders, or even a DVD drive in my computer) so I can't compare it to anything else but when our VHS vcr died we decided to get this as a replacement for recording stuff from the TV, and it does that brilliantly.
And recording is a breeze; simply highlight your chosen programme in the GuidePlus section, press the red button, and the timer is set!
Go and buy one now - you know you want to :o) |

Works great! Philips have done it again.
Doesn't record DVD-disc to harddrive. To workaround this connect a second DVD-player to EXT2 (scart). |
